The doctrine of propitiation, which emphasizes the need for some kind of sacrifice to appease a deity imagined as existing apart from the human condition, is one that still pervades cultures in one form or another worldwide. Theistic religions that hold to this doctrine tend to regard humanity as being mired in an inferior condition, one which can only be rectified by means of worshipful placation.

This widespread religious view holds its deity to be a sort of empyreal entity, separate from the material condition and wholeheartedly antipathetic to the pursuits thereof. Their so-called "supreme god", it is imagined, exists in an idyllic "perfection" beyond the processes of nature, and repudiates those who embrace their natural satisfaction. Carnal activities are severely restricted, if not condemned outright. The worshipper must be purged of his or her "sinful" tendencies if he or she is to expect to win the acceptance of the deity to which he or she aspires.

The premise upon which such theistic dogma is based, i.e. that spiritual purity excludes animalistic pleasure, is an absurd flight of fantasy that leads to numerous social and personal ills when taken as a theological foundation. A doctrine that holds that the animal condition in which we are inextricably bound, and from which there is no escape except in the fatuous rumination of a theologian, seems harmless enough in spite of its silliness; but there are problems that arise when theory extends to actual practice.

Ideologies developed from this kind of premise often have the same undesirable consequences when adhered to assiduously. For persistent repression of natural desires tends to lead to malevolent perception and serious dysfunction. The evidence is obvious in puritanical societies, particularly in the case of individuals who tend to the fanatical end of the religious spectrum.

This kind of manichean fundamentalism, in which the natural order of things is considered evil and detrimental to spiritual and social well-being, contorts the perspective of its most dedicated adherents into a neurotic monstrosity that really is far more of a threat to others than any fun-loving hedonist could ever be. It plants the seeds of extreme enmity in the minds of many of its most impassioned followers, leading the more unstable among them to despicable acts of violence against those who behave contrary to their unnatural standards. There are numerous serial killers whose vile actions are spurred on by their hatred for women who are openly promiscuous; and there are countless cases of reprehensible violence committed against gays merely because being gay is considered an atrocity in the eyes of some god who happens to exist only in the warped minds of the perpetrators of that violence. As if love, in any form, could ever be good reason for violent persecution.

What sort of "supreme being" reviles a man for his natural expression of love? Love is a beautiful thing, not a crime against heaven. Any god condemning one for loving another is nothing less than an enemy of humanity whom we should adamantly reject, not revere and force on society -- whether individually through violence and imposition of guilt or socially via restrictive legislation.

There is no state of "purity" contrary to natural happiness, except in the demented theology of men. All religion wherein some unnatural ideal is espoused -- an ideal that is detrimental to the health and happiness of man -- stems not from any "perfect" Supernal being but from man's own misinterpretation of an epiphany of a greater reality at the root of his own mind which he objectfies and idealizes as something beyond those aspects of himself that he considers base. For many so desperately want themselves to be considerably more than mere animals; but the fact remains that they "are" animals -- albeit very intelligent ones (in some cases at least) -- and the divine epiphany that the more enlightened among them realize is their very own hidden reality. Their activities are sacred, however base, provided that they contribute to their joy -- but only as long as they fail to do real harm to others.

Fanatical theism has been responsible for so much cruelty, suppression and genocide because humanity has failed to recognize the divinity in his own natural state of love and joy, seeking it instead in an unreal fantasy that he imagines as being superior to his own natural proclivity. It has resulted in the sacrifice of innocent humans and animals; the burning of art and books; the torture of "heretics" and the unjust persecution of "infidels". When will it stop? It is time that we wake from the nightmare of insane superstition and put an end to the madness of any theology that posits sanctity as anything other than pure, unconditional joy without primitive ideas of a supposedly superior deity demanding propitiation in exchange for a pipe dream.

Yet in so doing -- in championing the cause of liberating religious theory of archaic notions of so-called perfection -- in reconciling man's concept of divinity with his own potential for genius, we must not err as others have so often done by resorting to hatred and violence toward individuals with whom we disagree -- or by outlawing their own right to worship as they do. Each has the right to do as he please, to think as he please, to worship as he please -- no matter how pointless the deed, no matter how erroneous the thought, no matter how absurd the cult -- so long as he interfere with none other. Despising their stupidity is fine; brutalizing them is not. The way to save man from his madness is not to club him over the head -- for that merely emboldens those who would avenge him and tarnishes one's noble cause. The best way to do that is to assimilate the religion he espouses in an overarching spiritual law that purges any doctrine of its errors; and to promulgate a new way that will win over the less fanatical of his cult so that, in time, there are no more like him.

Whether one favors the religious approach or not, there is no other way to stamp out the madness of false religion (i.e. ideology of whatever variety that denies science and forces its followers to conform to an idiotic ideal that stifles natural happiness and creates neuroses). All primitive religions contain a germ of Truth: take that, dispense with the outmoded dogma that conflicts with science and that imposes illogical restrictions on society, then reconcile man with his own inherent divinity. Make it thoroughly convincing and eventually the religious problem which currently threatens humanity with extinction will be eliminated once and for all. Then humanity can take the next step in its evolution rather than fall back into oblivion.

The Law of Thelema outlines the way, and -- if well understood and properly applied to the problem at hand, with wisdom and patience -- it alone holds the key to getting beyond our global dilemma. There is no quick and easy path; but if we go with certainty, work with diligence and make every effort to tap our full potential for genius, we will not fail to win over the masses of confused fanatics -- with their own devices.

It "is "possible, no matter how difficult it may seem. "There is success." ("Liber Legis", 3:69.) We have gotten this far, conquered so many more arduous circumstances and overcome such abhorrent tendencies that this challenge pales in comparison. It just takes dedication, determination and unswerving perseverance. All great challenges are hard, but no problem is insurmountable given our infinite potential.

The error of theistic propitiation has been the cause of much unnecessary misery and madness. But religion itself is not to blame for that anymore than guns are to blame for crime. It is the way in which it is used that determines whether the effects are to our benefit or not. Religion, divorced from theistic superstition, utilized as a means by which to explore one's unlimited potential, is an instrument whereby one may realize infinitely more than ordinarily possible. It can lead one to the most extraordinary attainment of divine realization in the genius of our talent -- or to utter madness in the pointless idiocy of theistic propitiation. But all the problems associated with religion can be bypassed not by eliminating religion altogether -- for that would be throwing out the baby with the bathwater -- but by understanding it thoroughly and applying the mind to its method properly, in a way that is healthy for ourselves and for the planet.

Atheistic religion -- wherein the objective is not to curry the favor of some ethereal tyrant but to attain the Gnosis of one's own Holy Supernal Will -- is that way. It is our task to demonstrate its value, to lead by example. For it leads to a millionfold joy in our expedition to the Augoeides, our own Hidden Genius, in the accomplishment of our true Wills. And "that "is the Summum Bonum, True Wisdom and Perfect Happiness.

The Magical Tradition

The Magical Tradition, which included sex as a means to spiritual attainment, existed long before dynastic times in ancient Egypt, and there are early references to it in the sacred writings of India and China.

In Egypt this tradition was known as the Draconian or Typhonian Cult. It was the first systematized form of earlier African mysteries.

The doctrines which the Egyptians elaborated into a highly specialized cult, flowered later in the tantras of India, Mongolia, China, and Tibet. "Paradoxical as it may sound," writes Crowley, "the Tantrics are in reality the most advanced of the Hindus.

The essence of the Tantric cults is that by the perfor mance of certain rites' of Magick, one does not only escape disaster, but obtains positive benediction. The Tantric is not obsessed by the will-to-die. It is a difficult business, no doubt, to get any fun out of existence, but at least it is not impossible. In other words, he implicitly denies the fundamental proposition that existence is sorrow, and he formulates the essential postulate... that means exist by which the universal sorrow (apparent indeed to all ordinary observation) may be unmasked, even as at the initiatory rites of Isis in the ancient days of Khem (Egypt), a Neophyte presenting his mouth, under compulsion, to the pouting buttocks of the Goat of Mendes, found himself caressed by the chaste lips of a virginal priestess of that Goddess at the base of whose shrine it is written that No man hath lifted Her veil."

Crowley knew that the crux of tantric ritual lay in its connection with the magically induced ecstasies of sexual orgasm. Orgasm, in Reich's sense of a fulminant paroxysm involving the entire organism, is sometimes set against the Tantric concept of (a) a total orgasm, or (b) a total absence of orgasm; both these interpretations have been read into Tantric texts.

In either case, orgasm is commonly regarded as psychophysical phenomenon. But this is incorrect. Reich emphasized the distinction between ejaculation and orgasm, the one being physical, the other being, strictly speaking, metaphysical. Ejaculation without orgasm is a common occurrence, and, as Reich pointed out, total orgasm is a far less frequent phenomenon. It is undoubtedly even less frequent than he supposed. The Tantric conception of orgasm in its directly sexual sense (for it has others), is of a more comprehensive order; it may, in fact, be described as parasexual. It involves the Kundalini sakti, of which the sexual aspect is its most material form. The actual production of semen is the end-product, if not the waste-product, left over from an im properly and incompletely absorbed current of consciousness.

The Consciousness-Current is twofold: magical and mystical. The former operates in the lower chakras, the latter in the higher. That which ejaculates as semen is unabsorbed energy (prana or ojas), and it always contributes to the creation of material forms, whether lodged in a womb or not. If not, the overflow (as in masturbation, sodomy, fellatio, etc.), is taken up by the astral and quphotic entities and built into organisms already existing upon the subtle planes. Paracelsus refers to homunculi (artificially generated creatures) made from sperm independent of the female organism, and to astral larvae and parasitic monsters built out of the substance of voluptuous imaginings.

Out-of-body experiences. We've all seen the stories on Dateline and heard the accounts on 20/20 but few of us have ever experienced them. And while many of us are skeptical that the accounts are legit, most of us want to believe they're real. After all, how cool would it be to see yourself...outside your body?

In every day parlance, these experiences are called OUT-OF-BODY EXPERIENCES. In more technical terms, however, they're called ASTRAL PROJECTIONS: EXPERIENCES WHERE YOUR CONSCIOUS SELF ACTUALLY LEAVES YOUR BODY AND OPERATES ON ITS OWN. In effect, it's where your spiritual self leaves the physical self.

These experiences may seem like they're rare, but believe it or not, you've already experienced them...you just don't remember them. And you shouldn't remember them because you're not trained to remember them.

By reading this article, that's about to change.But before we get to that, you might be interested to know that personal accounts of astral projection have been around for centuries.

You name the culture, there is documentary evidence that shows awareness of astral projections and what they were. Egyptian priests called the astral body the Ka. Tibetans called the astral body the Bardo. And Greek philosophers-from the likes of Plato, Herodotus and Clazomene?-refer to astral projections in their writings. People skeptical of astral projections like to emphasize how there's no scientific evidence to back up these very personal accounts, but the fact that one of civilization's most prominent philosophers has written about them gives them credulity. Or at least they ought to.

Another misconception you might have about astral projections-or out-of-body experiences-is that their entirely random. Well, yes and no.

There are actually TWO KINDS OF ASTRAL PROJECTIONS:

* spontaneous (i.e. the random ones)
* controlled.

As you might imagine, the spontaneous ones never happen during one particular scenario, but they're usually when you're at least trying to relax. The other kinds are called controlled. Once again, as the adjective indicates, controlled are the ones where you can actually put yourself in an out-of-body experience whenever and wherever you want. How long it takes to learn how to do this varies from person to person. For some it will take weeks, for others it will take years. Much of it will depend on how much you practice and how much time you're willing to put into it to grasp the concept.

Finally, you may have heard in the course of your lifetime that the human brain uses a bare percentage of what it's actually capable of. The same is true for your life, or existence. Metaphysicians believe that there ARE SEVEN PLANES OF EXISTENCE:

* First Plane (Physical)
* Second Plane (Astral)
* Third Plane (Mental)
* Fourth Plane (Buddhic)
* Fifth Plane (Spiritual)
* Sixth Plane (Monadic)
* Seventh Plane (Adi)

Most of us operate on the first plane, the physical plane, where everything we know and understand is physical. What we can physically see and touch is what's real to us. The second plane is the astral plane-where what we truly desire and/or want for our lives can become reality. Now, the fact that the astral plane is the second of seven planes of existence out to speak volumes...if you thought that the astral plane was the height of existence. It is but the beginning. Reaching the seventh plane is said to be beyond explanation. That, in and of itself, is explanation enough on how glorious life can truly become

This is but a primer on astral projection. There's so much more to learn and eventually integrate into your life. To paraphrase the inimitable Dr. Seuss, oh, the places you'll go with astral projection!

This libertarian statement indicated that followers, who are known as Thelemites, should seek out and follow their own True Will rather than their ego's desires. Etheric Projection Technique

OK, Time to take your Astral Projection skill to the next level. Here is a special technique for you. It's called The Etheric Projection Technique. Just follow those 11 steps and have an open mind and enjoy!

Etheric Projection Technique (Etheric projection is tHE STATE OF LEAST SEPARATION FROM YOUR PHYSICAL BODY IN FACT YOU DON'T HAVE TO LEAVE YOUR BODY JUST SIT IN IT AND LOOK THROUGH YOUR CLOSED EYE LIDS.) You can try this technique at anytime but I've found it works on a lazy afternoon or if you set your alarm for an hour before you'd usually get out of bed).

1. The first time you try this you need to BE IN A CERTAIN STATE OF MIND. You have to be in a Zen like state (empty headed) even in a regressive, sleepy (but not really tired) mood. Basically you need to be in a relaxed dreamy state of mind to begin without any stress from an appointment within the next couple of hours.

2. I'm personally lucky (or unlucky) depending on your view point to have a very empty unthinking head :not) but YOU CAN DEEPEN THIS BY LISTENING TO CERTAIN MUSIC FOR HALF N HOUR BEFORE YOU START. I find the band Boards of Canada to be the best at this as they use sample loops that are from childhood, but those mood CD's with whales n sea on the shore n bird songs are the good too.

3. Have a CD on that will balance out the noise you might experience in your chosen room. I use a looped a HEMI-SYNC MP3 CALLED THETA that just sounds like speaker hiss gradually moving in a wave form, this is suppose to produce theta waves in the brain (works for me). Try and use something that your brain cannot recognize and hook into those mood CD's will do just set the volume so its as equal as you can get it to the ambient noise in the room. (Free Hemi-sync Music or Travishartnett music)

4. CHOOSE YOUR BOOK, IT SHOULD BE A CHALLENGING READ but not something that you have to tie your brain in a complete knot to read.

5. Lay down with your book, MAKING SURE THE BODY IS WARM BUT NOT HOT (just get comfy but not so it makes you want to sleep immediately).

6. Read and read but you want to get into a state where the text in the book has promoted your brain to fantasize about a related topic. I find this happens all the time if I'm not careful, I loose focus and slip off into imagining something else. YOU EYES MIGHT BE DROOPING AND IF YOU FEEL THE NEED TO CLOSE THEM DO SO.

7. DON'T SLEEP! as soon as your eyes are closed I want you to "very" gently try to recall the page you were just reading. Imagine that book is still in your hand a few feet from your eyes and you are still reading that page. Don't force it! Don't try to screw up your eyes and see the page. I'd say you were just seeing blackness with flashing colours and formless shapes at this time.

8. DON'T FOCUS ON THE SHAPES AND COLORS KEEP READING THE PAGE IN YOUR MIND, see the type face and if there was a diagram on the page imagine that. All the time keep the feeling that the page is held in your hand away from your face in a normal reading position.

9. This next part will either happen or it won't but if it does YOU'LL NOT REALLY NOTICE FROM ANYTHING FROM 5 TO 60 SECONDS. You'll still be imagining this page and reading it and then you suddenly notice that your not recalling the page from memory anymore your actually seeing the page and the book in seeming complete reality. When you get better you'll notice that at some that this point is like the second eye lid of a lizard or a shark. It just flicks open and your vision becomes crystal clear and bright and you instantly see the page.

10. If you don't loose this due to the shock I'll be surprised, its what always seems to a happen. Your mind is perfectly fine in that 5-60 second period where your seeing the imaginary/real book but as soon as you realize the implications and process all this you shock your self and loose it. DON'T be shocked if you open your eyes when this happens and your blind, IT WILL ONLY LAST FOR A MAXIMUM OF 20SECONDS AND YOUR VISION WILL RETURN (a bit tunnel like from the center to the outside).

11. At the opening of this inner eye(s) you need to keep relaxed and in the same state as before. Don't think too much, stop reading the book and look into your room, turn your head very gently. Note the quality of the light in particular (usually very golden) now you have to try and stand up and leave the room, I use the door but many people like to walk through walls or fly through the ceiling. If like me you have a reasonably logical mind you'll find flying very difficult and walking through walls is like walking through treacle. I can recommend slowly pushing your head through the glass of your window as personally I can see and feel the molecules of my body and the glass move around each other.

12. Things get very odd :not) you've managed to etheric project which you'll be unable to keep focused on and you'll astral project as soon as you leave the room where your body is located.

The Five Bodies

Let's take a look at the core elements that make up who we are and how that effects how we experience life and our astral projection travels. We don;y have only the physical body but a series of overlapping, multidimensional bodies. These bodies are variously described according to different traditions.

Physical

This is pretty self explanatory. The physical body HAS THE LOWEST VIBRATIONS and is attached to the etheric and the astral.

Etheric

The etheric body can leave the physical, but when it does, I don't think it goes any great distance. I think its role is a "LIFE ENERGY" body. When the body goes to sleep, the etheric expands, the chakras open, and we receive energy and restore our depleted supply. This is why it is also referred to as the vitality sheath or health body. When I'm tired and drained, I can lay down for half an hour, enter a trance like state and wake up feeling totally refreshed. This is not the projection of the astral body, but a charging of the etheric. If the etheric projected a great deal, our bodies would feel drained, not refreshed, upon return. When I astral project, my etheric is doing its job of replenishing my body, and when I come back, I am refreshed. The two are independent.

When people experience "duality" aka mind splitting (where the consciousness resides at two locations) I believe one part of the consciousness is in the etheric and another one is in the astral.

There are also a lot of discrepancies on the silver cord. I personally have never seen this cord (but I haven't really looked for it either). Is has been suggested that the cord is related to etheric projection, not astral. If the cord was associated with just astral projection, then we would see it every time we astrally projected.

"I remember once leaving my body and out of curiosity I looked back towards my physical body. I saw a body, but it was in a totally different position than my physical! It was the etheric body that I was seeing. In the astral, we see the astral counterparts of the physical, but I think we can also see our etheric shell (this explains why I saw the etheric body, and not the physical)."

On several occasions, during meditation, I have been able to see the ceiling through my physical eyelids. This is also not astral projection.

People who are sickly have reported more OBEs. I think this is because the etheric is weak and the astral is able to separate more easily. Both our physical and etheric bodies are magnetic in nature and influence the pull of the astral.

When objects are moved, I think it is more from the influence of the etheric body, rather than the astral which does not share the same vibrations as objects in the physical. The etheric is of a higher vibration than the physical, but lower than the astral.

Astral

The ASTRAL BODY IS ALIGNED WITH THE PHYSICAL and is of a lower vibration when it is attached. To unattach, the frequencies must be raised. The astral body can transcend various levels in the astral plane. It reacts to thoughts and can see the astral counterpart of the physical world. It cannot affect physical objects because they do not share the same vibrations. The astral body can transcend time and space. There is a feeling of separation when consciously projecting from the body. Rushing, vibrating, roaring, crackling and popping (to name a few). When in the astral, our filter is removed and we are able to see, hear and feel more.

Mental

THE MENTAL BODY IS WHERE REMOTE VIEWING HAPPENS. When you achieve bi-location during remote viewing, there is no feeling of separation as with astral projection. There is also no visual distortion as there sometimes is with astral projection (depending on where you are at on the astral plane). My first "projection" was a mental one. I went straight from the physical to the mental body which explains why there were no vibrations. I just involuntarily "popped" out and was several blocks away. I also think the mental body is often independent of our physical one. Unlike astral projection, when I separate, I detach from the body and travel accordingly. In the mental, you just show up somewhere and have done nothing to travel there. The mental body does not contain the thought "junk" of the astral. You may be able to see partial thoughts formed in the astral (as in a partially built ship), but not in the mental. When I wake up in the mental, I am usually nowhere near my body and have no sensation of a body of any kind. I once "woke up" in the mental and I had no way to determine where I was. It was pitch black, I had no ears, no eyes, no body. It was a void that I remained in until a sudden return to the physical. It was a pure state of 'being'.

The mental body also transcends time and space. Advanced remote viewers, using their mental body, communicate telepathically.

Spiritual

The spiritual body is WHERE PAST LIFE MEMORIES ARE STORED. This plane is one up from the astral. When we die, we enter the astral and eventually experience a second death (the astral body diminishes) and we enter the spiritual plane where we then remember our past lives and can then make decisions for our next.

Do What Thou Wilt

The Book of the Law provides only one “commandment” to the individual by which he must (if he wishes to be taken seriously as a Thelemite, at least) govern his conduct, which is “Do what thou wilt”. Excluding the Comment, this phrase appears in two places in the Book, and is very closely paraphrased in a third:

“Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.” (AL I, 40)
“So with thy all; thou hast no right but to do thy will. Do that, and no other shall say nay.” (AL I, 42–43)
“There is no law beyond Do what thou wilt.” (AL III, 60)

The language here is unequivocal; “Do what thou wilt” shall be the whole of the Law (AL I, 40), and there is no law beyond it (AL III, 60). Furthermore, not only is “Do what thou wilt”, the only “commandment”, but it is also the only right (AL I, 42), and it is an indefeasible one (AL I, 43). Crowley sums this up in Liber II:

“Do what thou wilt — then do nothing else. Let nothing deflect thee from that austere and holy task. Liberty is absolute to do thy will; but seek to do any other thing whatsoever, and instantly obstacles must arise.”

There is no scope for argument, here; the language in the Book itself and in Crowley's commentaries is absolutely unambiguous, and this is crucial to understanding the subject. A thriving cottage industry has arisen providing a variety of divergent interpretations on verses from Chapter I such as AL I, 3 (“Every man and every woman is a star”), AL I, 22 (“Let there be no difference made among you between any one thing & any other thing”), AL I, 41 (“The word of Sin is Restriction”), and AL I, 57 (“Love is the law, love under will”) in order to twist the text to fit any number of wild and fanciful notions of “right conduct”, yet it is a plain fact that any such notions can only possess validity to the extent that they conform to — and arise necessarily from — the three verses quoted above. The only flexibility of interpretation that we have is in deciding exactly what “Do what thou wilt” means in the first place. The single most widespread and systematic mistake that people make when considering the ethics of Thelema is to suppose that “Thou hast no right but to do thy will” includes an obligation to allow everybody else the freedom to do their wills unhindered by you. It doesn't. Not only is this concept absent from the Book of the Law, but the Book exhorts precisely to the contrary:

“Compassion is the vice of kings: stamp down the wretched & the weak: this is the law of the strong: this is our law and the joy of the world.” (AL II, 21)

“Beware therefore! Love all, lest perchance is a King concealed! Say you so? Fool! If he be a King, thou canst not hurt him. Therefore strike hard & low, and to hell with them, master!” (AL II, 59–60)
“But the keen and the proud, the royal and the lofty; ye are brothers! As brothers fight ye!” (AL III, 58–59) “Stamp down the wretched & the weak: this is the law of the strong: this is our law” — we may reasonably suppose that the strong need neither our permission nor our assistance in order to do their wills, and the strong are given countenance to “stamp down” the rest. The strong are specifically released from any obligation to consider the will of another — “If he be a King, thou canst not hurt him”. If the wills of two Kings were to conflict, the guidance is straightforward: “ye are brothers! As brothers fight ye!”

Clearly, this libertarian and vaguely socialistic idea of avoiding getting in the way of anybody else's will is just not in the Book, which expressly tells us to forget about anybody else's will, to focus on doing our own, and to “stamp down” (or at least try to) anybody who gets in our way. Yet, this idea is so deeply ingrained, and so endemic, that in order to convince those who have gotten it into their minds it will be worthwhile examining the sources for it, and it turns out there are four primary culprits.

If you do not feel any results right away, do not worry. It may take up to three days of practicing before seeing results.

Your Astral Preparation Vehicle - Week 3

It's week three and you should start it by completing the exercises you were practicing in week one and two. Activate your 7 Chakras. Visualize them as astral matter that leaves your chest forming a circle-like shell.

At first, you are only imagining this, but after a few days of practice, it is expected that you actually be exteriorizing this astral matter from within your thoughts.

4TH WEEK: ASTRAL PROJECTION

Congratulations! This is your final week and final step. You are ready to start your first astral adventure. First, imagine the top of your head. This will help you to intensify your consciousness. Continue imagining until a figure flows out of you.

Fully concentrate in your consciousness into this figure. Now deliberately turn this figure around. Keep in mind that your perspective moves as it shifts this is a most essential part of the transfer. Being one with the figure- you are off into the astral world...

Egypt. No other name in the Western Mystery Tradition invokes such respect, such mystery. The Black Land on the Nile. The place that most practioners of the High Arts will tell you that those same arts originated. Why this fascination with the land of Egypt? In the Modern Era, Egypt has been the source for inspirations for the occult world since Napoleon's expedition there at the close of the 18th Century.

There were several ancient schools of magick in Ancient Egypt. Everyone from Moses to Pythagoras was supposed to have been trained there in the magickal arts. Even the magnificent Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistos was supposedly found, cradled on the chest of Hermes, in an Egyptian tomb by Alexander the Great. This diminutive text of twelve brief statements is, along with the other Trismegistic literature, completely compatible with the Alchemical and Hermetic Traditions. Hermeticism, as we know, was the meeting of the ancient Hellenic and Egyptian cultures in the centuries at the beginning of the Common Era, and inspired by a god born from the merger of these two cultures, Hermes Trismegistos. Throughout the first three centuries of the Common Era Hermetic thought and philosophy was at its height.

The influence of Egypt on the Western Mystery Tradition continued through the various minor schools of the Kabbalah well into the 16th Century in Egypt. There were numerous schools in Alexandria and Cairo. The most famous product of these later schools of the Kabbalah was Rabbi Isaac Luria, commonly known as the Ari (an acronym standing for Elohi Rabbi Isaac, the Godly Rabbi Isaac). It is from these later schools of the Kabbalah that originate several of the most important surviving commentaries of not only Kabbalistic writing, but also the Talmud and Torah.

Inspired by these great resources, in the 19th Century several groups of European magicians and esoteric students again began to look to Egypt. There were several Fringe Masonic groups that looked more at the Egyptian Mysteries, including the Universal Rite of Co-Masonry in France and the various occult orders that sprang up in England near the close of that century. The most well know of these orders was of course the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, but there was another earlier order that had just as much influence on what would become the modern Western Mystery Traditions. That order was the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor, which helped influence the later Golden Dawn and in the United States, the Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.).

Begun in 1909, it remains one of the definitive works on occultism and magick, while several issues also contain poetry, fiction, plays, artwork, and biographies. The last issue was published in 1998, although two new editions are currently being prepared for publication.

WITH the publication of this REVIEW begins a completely new adventure in the history of mankind. Whatever knowledge may previously have been imputed to men, it has always been fenced in with conditions and restrictions. The time has come to speak plainly, and so far as may be in the language of the multitude.

Thus, the Brothers of the A. A. announce themselves without miracle or mystery. It is easy for every charlatan to perform wonders, to bewilder and even to deceive not only fools but all persons, however shrewd, untrained in observation; nor does the trained observed always succeed instantly in detecting the fraud. Again, what the A. A. propose to do is to enable such men as are capable of advancement to a higher interpretation of manhood to do so; and the proof of their ability lies in their success, and not in any other irrelevant phenomenon. The argument from miracles is a non sequitur.

Nor is there anything mysterious in the A. A.; one must not confuse the mysterious with the unknown. Some of the contents of this REVIEW may be difficult or impossible to understand at first, but only in the sense that Homer is unintelligible to a person ignorant of Greek.

Mary D'Esti Sturges, or Soror Virakam, was the second of eleven Scarlet Women. The photo above depicts her around the time that she knew Aleister Crowley.

Virakam -- who certainly resembled Rose Kelly, the woman she succeeded as Scarlet Woman -- assisted Crowley in establishing the magical link with the praeterhuman minds that inspired him with one of his greatest works, "Book 4", or" Liber ABA". Her ability as a seer was great; a record of her oracular talent can be found in "The Ab-ul-Diz Working".

She was born on October 10th, 1871 E.V., in Quebec, Canada. She owned a cosmetics firm called Desti Beauty Products and she also owned a New York City studio that sold art, perfume and clothing. And she was a close friend of the dancer, Isadora Duncan, and authored her biography, entitled "The Untold Story: the Life of Isadora Duncan".

She was also the mother of Preston Sturges -- to whom Crowley referred as "The Brat" -- who went on to become a famous Hollywood director. As a child, Preston disliked Crowley for his bizarre appearance and unusual activities. Later in life he was quoted as saying: "I realize my mother and I were lucky to escape with our lives. If I had been a little older, he might not have escaped with his." Which only demonstrates his complete ignorance of the man he loathed.

Mary died in New York City on April 12th, 1931 E.V.

Behind me - strange! - the gloom is less obscure than in the East to which the eyes yearn feebly. Do I feel it by instinct - the form of a vast pyramidal hill of stark black rock? I am too weary to turn my head to look.

All of a sudden, far behind me, far beyond that crest, if it be one, rings out a voice, clear, firm, courageous, confident. It is a soldier's voice, the accent of command, the valour of manhood. None can mistake - I am assured - that ringing call. Truth, Victory, in each trumpet tone: Listen!

The Three Books

The Book of the Law was delivered over three days, each session taking about an hour. During each day there was a manifestation of a different deity and these define the three chapters or “books”. The Book calls itself the “threefold book of law” (I:35). The first deity is the Goddess Nuit who represents the divine Feminine and is associated, through the nature of the Book, with the Sephiroth of Binah the third sphere on the Qabalistic Tree of Life. Binah is the receptive, feminine, the ultimate mother and lover. This sphere is often associated with the Stella Maris and the Hebrew God-Name is Elohim, the divine Creatrix of Genesis 1:1.

The second chapter is dictated by the divine father who is represented by Hadit. Hadit is, in the Qabalistic Tree of Life, connected with Chockmah, the supernal Father, the divine Masculine. This Sephiroth is assigned the Hebrew God-Name which we call the Tetragrammaton.

It is the personal name of God written hvhy. This is the father figure and to a certain respect represents the balance of himself and his bride. The two together create the top of the triad of which almost all religions understand as part of the divine.

The third and last chapter is dictated by Ra-Hoor-Kuit or Horus the Younger. The avenger God of Egypt who is assigned to the sphere of the child, the Sephiroth Tiphareth. Of the various names assigned to this sphere perhaps the most important to our purposes is Yeheshua This is the same name which some later associated with the Messiah. It is the child of the supernal mother and father.

During the essay certain quotes will be attributed to one God or another. It is because of this dictation by these three Egyptian manifestations of the divine that such references are made.

Any work as perplexing as the Book of the Law simply cries out for some sort of learned commentary and Crowley attempted several over the course of his life. The only one he regarded as completely successful is a one-page ‘inspired’ Comment, now included in most editions of Liber AL, whose primary injunction is that people should interpret the book for themselves.

This still leaves Crowley’s more extensive commentaries, with which he was never satisfied to the end of his life. Some thirty years after he died no less than three separate editions of these long commentaries appeared in print from three different editors each making different cuts in Crowley’s text so that all were different and none were complete. John Symonds and Kenneth Grant teamed up to produce Magical and Philosophical Commentaries on The Book of the Law (1974) while Marcelo Motta published The Commentaries of AL (1976) and Israel Regardie called his version The Law is for All (1975). Motta and Grant were motivated largely by a need to legitimate their respective ‘pseudo-O.T.O.s’ which they were promoting at the time and added their own commentaries to Crowley’s. In Motta’s case at least this probably did more harm than good, since his commentary displayed his notable paranoia, intolerance, ignorance and vicious diatribes against his supposed ‘enemies’ for all to see. The Symonds and Grant version is the most complete of the three, although Regardie’s was the only one to remain in print for any length of time.

Lost in all this was the fact that, far from being hostile to any abridgement of this work, Crowley had actually commissioned one himself. While not a Magician in any formal sense, Louis Umfraville Wilkinson (1881 - 1966) was a talented writer and close friend for many years. His lack of formal occult training made him the ideal person to edit Crowley’s own commentaries down to something both manageable and accessible to the average person. Crowley’s instructions were essentially to ‘cut out anything that doesn’t make sense to you on the first reading,’ and Wilkinson set to work. The result, which was never quite finished after Crowley’s death in 1947, languished in typescript until 1996 when Hymenaeus Beta completed the project and issued it as... The Law is for All.

Now there is a certain inherent confusion in having two very different versions of the same book out by the same author with the same title... and from the same publisher to boot! It was felt that the title was appropriate to a commentary designed for the newcomer, so essentially the Regardie edition was allowed to go out of print and the Wilkinson edition just replaced it. This does leave the potential buyer with the problem of determining which version is being offered for sale at any given time, especially if you’re buying through a catalogue or on-line. Naturally the full bibliographic data will settle the matter seeing as the editors are different and, if all else fails, you just need to ask on which side of 1996 the particular copy is copyrighted. Thankfully, those so old-fashioned as to do their shopping in a store have an even simpler option: the Regardie edition has a white cover while the Wilkinson version is clad in dark purple. It is thus easy to distinguish between them even across a crowded room.

Incidentally, there are plans to publish Crowley’s complete commentaries on The Book of the Law. However, considering the agonising process that is Thelemic publishing, there’s no telling how long it will take before that happy tome will reach store shelves. So, on the whole, I recommend you get the Wilkinson version. Aside from being the abridgement Crowley actually wanted to publish, it features a full photographic reproduction of the manuscript of Liber AL, an up-to-date bibliography of Crowley’s works, and a good index. Naturally you also get the full printed text of Liber AL itself. It is also, by design, the best suited to the beginner.

Verses 75 and 76 of chapter 2 of "Liber L vel Legis", "The Book of the Law", comprising the Riddle of Aiwass, have as yet remained a mystery. They read as follows:

"Aye! listen to the numbers nor shalt thou know ever. There cometh one to follow thee: he shall expound it. But remember, o chosen one, to be me; to follow the love of Nu in the star-lit heaven; to look forth upon men, to tell them this glad word."

As prophesied, Aleister Crowley, the first Prophet of Thelema, never discovered the solution to the problem of these baffling verses. His first "magical child" -- or "Dynasthai" -- i.e. C.S. Jones, a.k.a. Frater Achad, also failed to apprehend their meaning. Many others, including myself, have made their attempts, but each one has fallen flat. They have presented recondite, rambling torrents of elaborate Qabalistic theses on the matter, thinking that they had stumbled upon Truth; but none has issued much more than a disappointing flood of numerical vagaries.

I, myself, utilized the simple, uncontrived system of AQBL (or Angloqabalah) to arrive at the value of 395 as the sum of the meaningless numbers and words in the string at the beginning of the second verse, and presented this as the solution in my book of Gematric examination of "Liber Legis "entitled "The AQBL Key "(a PDF of which can be found in the sidebar library of this site). I arrived at this over twenty years ago; but little did I know -- until now -- that I had stumbled upon only the half of it. And this too was prophesied, way back in 1904 e.v., in v.56 of ch.1, which states:

"Expect him not from the East, nor from the West; for from no expected house cometh that child. Aum! All words are sacred and all prophets true; save only that they understand a little; solve the first half of the equation, leave the second unattacked."

But I jump the gun. I need to provide some of the vital historical information -- and to briefly explain the system used to arrive at the very simple solution to the verses in question -- before divulging the solution itself.

I: History of the Riddle

In his "Old Comment" to the first verse, "L" 2:75, Crowley writes:

"A final revelation. The revealer to come is perhaps the one mentioned in [ch.] I, 55 and III, 47. The verse goes on to urge the prophet to identify himself with Hadit, to practice the Union with Nu, and to proclaim this joyful revelation unto men."

In the "New Comment" to v.75, he writes:

"This passage following appears to be a Qabalistic test (on the regular pattern) of any person who may claim to be the Magical Heir of The Beast. Be ye well assured all that the solution, when it is found, will be unquestionable. It will be marked by the most sublime simplicity, and carry immediate conviction.

"(The above paragraph was written previous to the communication of Charles Stansfeld Jones with regard to the 'numbers and the words' which constitute the Key to the cipher of this Book. See the Appendix to these comment. I prefer to leave my remark as it originally stood, in order to mark my attitude at the time of writing.)"

He was wrong about Jones, as he would eventually come to realize, so he came to anticipate the arrival of yet another. In his "New Comment" to the second verse, he expressed his disappointment with Achad, leaving it pretty much at that. In his "Djeridensis Comment", he writes two paragraphs of interest:

"75-76: With this the Angel changes His theme yet again with brusque swiftness, and propounds a final riddle. The object of this cipher is to furnish proof that the man destined to succeed me is my rightful heir. The test is that he is able to make clear the meaning of these 'the numbers ">'

"This brief passage stops as it began-on a sudden, and Aiwass goes on at once to issue a last command to myself. I am to keep in constant mind that I am Hadit, that I am ever to aspire to make myself one with all things that may be, yet also to keep watch over mankind, for whose sake I first started on the path of Magick. My mission is 'to tell them this glad word.'"

And that was that. The solution -- as simple as it was -- would remain an enigma to all for decades to come.

II: THE SPHINX IS UNDONE

"Oedipus and the Sphinx (Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres)"

As explained in "The AQBL Key", I have always made use of the Gematria of Angloqabalah -- or AQBL for short -- to analyze English words Qabalistically. Unlike all other forms of English Gematria that have emerged previously, AQBL is not some artificially contrived system of arbitrarily assigned values for the letters of the English Alphabet, but simply the natural order and value that has been obvious all along. In the Gematria of AQBL, a letter bears the value of its place in the Alphabet. Using it, I arrived at 395 as the sum of "the numbers but they are as nothing compared with what I was to find next, right there under my nose -- right in front of us all -- all these years.

Again, I cannot stress enough the value of AQBL as a means of English Gematria. Unlike all other forms of English Qabalah, the attribution of the numbers to the letters is not something that I or anyone else invented, for that attribution has been there all along. It is utterly simple: A=1 through Z=26. That Crowley never even considered it in all his years is amazing. But, as a thorough analysis of "The AQBL Key" makes clear, its correspondences are nothing short of extraordinary.

I was just finishing up my last preparations when something made me stop to take another look at the verses themselves. I had never paid it any mind before, but suddenly I was struck by the odd way in which verse 75 ended -- not with a period but with a colon. The string of meaningless numbers and words at the start of the following verse is actually the continuation -- the second half in other words -- of the riddle, not the whole of the riddle as I had assumed.

All of a sudden I was hit with an inspiration, as it were a whisper in my ear, saying: "Add them together". And so I did, not really expecting much to come of it. Then my jaw dropped and I was utterly aghast.

Look carefully at the words of Aiwass following the riddle itself:

"What meaneth this, o prophet? Thou knowest not; nor shalt thou know ever. There cometh one to follow thee: he shall expound it."

Note that Crowley's primary Thelemic name was "To Mega Therion", which numerates as 666 by Greek Gematria. He referred to himself, therefore, as 666. I myself have gone by the name of Aleisterion since it was given to me in a vision over a decade ago. Its numeration, by Hebrew Gematria -- i.e. Aleph-Lamed-He-Yod-Samekh-Tau-He-Resh-Yod-Vau-Nun -- is 777. This value was also used by Fra.'.Achad : "for it signifies the one (or 111) to follow after 666".

What other solution more fitting, then, could be found, than that which I discovered once I totalled the numbers of the other half of the equation, in light of the words, "There cometh one to follow thee: he shall expound it". This "one" (or 111) has always been referred to numerically as 777.

Behold:

Aye! listen to the numbers for behold! thou, o prophet, shalt not behold all these mysteries hidden therein.

"The child of thy bowels, "he" shall behold them.

"Expect him not from the East, nor from the West; for from no expected house cometh that child. Aum! All words are sacred and all prophets true; save only that they understand a little; SOLVE THE FIRST HALF OF THE EQUATION, LEAVE THE SECOND UNATTACKED. But thou hast all in the clear light, and some, though not all, in the dark."

The emphasis in bold is mine, to highlight that this is exactly what happened. I had, for over twenty years, presented only half of the solution, failing to recognize that the existence of that colon meant that the riddle consisted not just of the string of numbers and words of the opening part of v.76, but of the words of v.75 as well.

III: THE OTHER QABALISTIC GEMS

While nothing can exceed the simple sublime perfection of what is presented above, there are numerous other Gematric gems to be found in the verses relevant to this matter. Below, I present a brief Qabalistic examination of the passages from "The Book of the Law "that apply to the one known as 777, or the "child of the Prophet". The value of these gems is that they illustrate why various idiosyncratic words and phrases may have been used by Aiwass, conveying as they do additional profound meaning.

The verses that fall under our examination here are: 1:54-56; 2:39; 2:75-76; 3:38; and 3:47. They are presented in order as they appear in "Liber Legis".

1:54-56:

"Change not as much as the style of a letter": style=81=letter.

"thou, o prophet, shalt not behold all these mysteries hidden therein":

behold all=71=Thoth. Thoth, under the name Tahuti, is referenced in 2:39 as being associated with the "child of the Prophet". This is because the source of the "dynamis" that inspired this second child or "Dynasthai" was Leah Hirsig, a.k.a. Soror Alostrael 31-666-31, whose title was "The Ape of Thoth". She died in the 71st year of the Thelemic Age, which began with the reception of the Law of Thelema in 1904 e.v.

1. The Holy Supernal Will and I are One: One is its Word; One its Strength, and its Rectification One. One is the Gnosis; One is the Communion; and One is the Sanctity in All.

2. God is none: there is no God where I am.

3. My Holy Will is One; my Will is the Everlasting One; nor hath it any Equal; or any Offspring, or any Companion. Nothing shall stand before it in opposition to its just approach.

The elemental Spirits of Air are the Sylphs.

Mastering the element Air...

1- Make a list of the things which have the combined qualities of warmth and moistness. Practice this for one week. Be sure to record the results each day in your magickal diary.

2- Find a place where you can be alone, take a lounge chair along with you. Wear as little clothing as you can (if possible, nudity is best), and sit or lie in the chair. Begin pore breathing. This is started by doing the relaxation ritual. Next, become very aware of your breath. Become aware of the slow in and out motion of the physical air. Notice the way the air feels as it enters your body. Now imagine that your body is nothing more then a huge breathing apparatus. Imagine that every part of your body only has the function of breathing. You should do this exercise daily for one week.

3- Spend a period of up to three minutes (no more), once a day, imagining that you are the element Air. Feel the lightness, the giddiness, the warmth and moisture of Air. Feel how physical things don't seem to matter. Do this exercise for only one week, NO MORE. If you wish to do it again, only do it once a month.

4- Once you have learned to "be Air", the next step is to control the element Air. Take a moment and imagine yourself to be Air. Bring the feeling from the previous exercise into your consciousness. Next, hold your hands 9-12 inches apart, palms facing each other. Imagine a bottle or box between your hands. Now, as you exhale, visualize all of the Air element which is in you going out with your breath and into the container between your hands. Three to five breaths should be enough to fill it. Then, with three breaths, inhale it back into you and go back to normal consciousness.

THE TEST

The next time you feel heavy, slow or lazy, do this exercise. If you feel relaxed and refreshed, you have succeeded with the test AND with mastering the element Air.

Ritual Work Of The Hermetic Brotherhood Of Luxor

The Outer Circle relied upon a system of initiatory ceremonies that drew heavily on the Rosicrucian and Masonic initiations of the last part of the 18th and the early 19th Centuries. Max Theon and Peter Davidson put a more Egyptian flare in these ceremonies. This use of Egyptian symbolism helped to create an atmosphere that drew from the ancient land of Egypt. The name of the Order began this by using the word Luxor, the Egyptian for the city of Thebes, the former capital of the land. The lay out of these initiation ceremonies is very near to what they are modeled after, the initiation ceremonies of the more established Rosicrucian and Masonic Orders in Europe.[16] These ceremonies do not need to be discussed nearly as much as the personal work that the Order was having its members perform.

The material that was used by the Outer Circle of the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor was rather interesting. Much of this ritual work and philosophy can be seen in Thomas H. Burgoyne's book, The Light of Egypt, that he wrote after the breakup of the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor. The majority of this book concerns astrology, but there are also chapters that cover Symbolism, Alchemy (organic), Alchemy (occult), (these two are from Burgoyne), Talismans, Ceremonial Magic, Magic Wands, The Tablets of Aeth, which is in three parts, and Penetralia. I think that it is interesting to note that Burgoyne starts his book with several chapters devoted to astrology, which had become more popular by 1900 when The Light of Egypt was first published. This gets the student into studying what has become one of the basics of any magickal Order since that time. Included in these chapters on astrology are two rather fascinating chapters on Astro-Theology, and Astro-Mythology. The chapter on Astro-Theology gives subchapters on The Creation of the World and The Scheme of Redemption.

This sacred Bible is the great Astral Bible of the skies; its chapters are the twelve great signs, its pages are the innumerable glittering constellations of the heavenly vault, and its characters are the personified ideals of the radiant Sun, the silvery moon, and the shining planets, of our solar sphere.

There are three different aspects of this sacred book, and in each aspect the same characters appear, but in different roles, their dress and natural surroundings being suited to the natural play of their symbolical parts. In fact, the whole imagery may be likened unto a play, or, rather, a series of plays, performed by the same company of artists. It may be a comedy, or it may be melodrama, or it may be a tragedy; but the principles behind the scenes are ever the same, and show forth the same Divine Oneness of Nature; demonstrating the eternal axiom. One truth, one life, one principle, and one word, and in their fourfold expression, is the four great chapters of the celestial book of the starry heavens.

This is an interesting way to look at the heavens and astrology as a whole, though Burgoyne does hit upon the one Great Truth in his axiom, "One truth, one life, one principle, and one word". He also discusses how the four great chapters of this celestial book can give insight into the Divine nature. This is something that all magicians have been seeking from the beginning. Much of this can be seen in Burgoyne's chapter of the Creation.

Perhaps the very first thing we should bear in mind, the object of highest priority, when contemplating the message of Aiwass, is the verse from "Liber Legis" (2:70) that reads: "if thou do aught joyous, let there be subtlety therein". I.e., true will carries with it "millionfold joy", so if you are to do your true will -- as opposed to some ill-formed personal agendum -- you simply have to learn its incredible depth of subtlety. The whole book is extraordinarily subtle all throughout, and the consequences of failing to realize this, of misinterpreting the book in so many possible ways, are severe: "There is great danger in me; for who doth not understand these runes shall make a great miss. He shall fall down into the pit called Because, and there he shall perish with the dogs of Reason." (2:27.)

The atheism of " The Book of the Law" is evident first in vs.20-23 of ch.1. It is in v.20 that we are told that the key of the whole ritual -- in other words, the key to our new form of religion -- is to be found in "a secret word" given to the prophet. I go over all of this, albeit briefly, in "The AQBL Key": see pages 10-18. But an excellent example of the subtlety of the book can be found right here in this verse. What I didn't write in that segment of "The AQBL Key", is the following important insight into the full intended meaning of the word "secret" here (in "The Key" I really only examine its AQBL meaning), though I do note the atheistic basis of the following verses. I'll get back to this in just a moment.

As for those who dispense with the whole notion of religion outright, I tend to see this as throwing out the baby with the bathwater. It is primitive religion that is outmoded, not religion itself. Religion "sans" God, centered instead on the mystery of consciousness, i.e. on Self-Gnosis and the acceleration of the evolution of the temporal mind, bringing it to a measure of apprehension of the underlying reality of the praeternatural Mind, is the nature of our atheistic theological system. Crowley is in agreement with this: there is not only that line in "Liber Oz", "There is no god but man", but we have other examples of his position on this matter.

E.g., the very first line of the "Blue Equinox" reads as follows:

"THE WORLD NEEDS RELIGION. Religion must represent Truth, and celebrate it. This truth is of two orders: one, concerning Nature external to Man; two, concerning Nature internal to Man. Existing religions, especially Christianity, are based on primitive ignorance of the facts, particularly of external Nature."

Again, it is primitive religious theory that must be discarded in the interest of science, not a liturgical theory wherein the objective is to uncover and attain the unknown potential of the mind. Then there is p.395 of "The Confessions of Aleister Crowley", with this line: "The importance of religion to humanity is paramount. Paramount".

It is only superstitious religion that is beneath us. Back to the "secret". The key to the riddle of the "secret word" that is itself the key to our unique system of religion, is this: that it is "secret" in the sense that it is actually" secreted" into the very first line of the very next verse. The word is "nothing": "With the God but note also the number of the verse, as it is the same as the Gematric value of "I am". Now jump ahead a bit to 1:27-28: "O Nuit, continuous one of Heaven, let it be ever thus; that men speak not of Thee as One but as None; and let them speak not of thee at all, since thou art continuous! None, breathed the light, faint and "two", the reality of division in which we experience infinite possibilities, is all. Look next at verse 46: "Nothing is a secret key of this law." There we have it, as plain as day.

But the atheism of Thelema is unique as well, not your garden-variety materialism, but much different, though it acknowledges the sanctity of materialistic indulgence, as is healthy. In Thelema we see consciousness itself, independent of the brain but utilizing it as a vehicle, as a form of energy that is not only ultimately independent of its limitation but in fact unlimited in intelligence and linked to every other point of consciousness ad infinitum. What one encounters in Samadhi -- an experience that very few have truly known, and yet one that many more have either disengenuously or mistakenly laid claim to -- that total manifestation of the underlying source of all awareness across all of the cycles of time and space, "that" is essentially what God is, and from the limited, temporal perspective in which we initially find ourselves, this being" seems" objectively real -- it is even in the possession of greater knowledge than we ourselves, in our temporary blindness, think that we are capable of. What we do not realize until we progress beyond this limited perspective, by opening up our realization through the routine of sacerdotal work that accesses this infinite underlying reality, is that we are not merely in the moment: we are at once in the past and the future as in the present; and this greater mind of God that is at the heart of the phenomenon called Atmadarshana, that underlies and indwells us, is really our own, on a level not ordinarily known but which we peer into at odd moments, in dreams and in visions.

That we see multiple Gods expressed in "Liber Legis" should not lead to the primitive-minded conclusion that Thelemic religion is polytheistic; again, it is not theistic at all, for the indwelling deity that it proposes is not objectively real nor is it personally-limited, but simply the essence of our own (and all) awareness. It is our contention that the kind of spiritual self-awakening that we undertake actually leads to our "achieving Hadit", or shifting our perspective to the broader one without sacrificing or diminishing our place. These "gods" are facets of a single reality that, as it is unconstrained to any limitation but in every point continually, is really nothing "in particular". They are, moreover, formulae that convey a doctrine. For instance, having three in one (or none) is vital to us now, as we have advanced first out of the Aeon of Isis, the Mother, and matriarchal cults, through the patriarchal formula of the old Aeon, that of Osiris, the Father, finally to an ideology that embraces neither female nor male as superior, but both equally: i.e., the Child, who is really Baphomet, the two-in-one Androgynous Hoor-pa-kraat and Ra-Hoor-Khuit, passive and active, feminine and masculine.

The key thing to understand is that our form of religion does not postulate a God apart from oneself, and consequently, there is no need for petition, as there is in fact no God to get personally interested in your petition, and also no need for the silly yet psychologically damaging notion of sin, which is dangerous not only for the effect that the consequent guilt-complex poses to the mind exposed thereto, but to a healthy social interaction as well.

Isis, Osiris, Horus: these might be said to be Nuit, Hadit, Ra-Hoor-Khuit; but they are also Babalon, Beast, Baphomet (Babalon and Beast conjoined); and too, H KOKKINE GYNE, TO MEGA THERION, and AIWASS. These are all names not of actual entities that are in some celestial cafe right now, but names chosen for their symbolic significance.

Born on this day in 1879, Albert Einstein falls into our fourth category of Thelemic Saints, i.e., "Geniuses, Artists, Mystics and/or Oracles whose contributions to culture and/or science, and manner of living, have significantly contributed to the societal establishment of the liberational Law of Thelema and/or to the progress of humanity." To mark the occasion, we present an article he wrote that appeared in the "New York Times Magazine" on November 9, 1930 pp 1-4. It has been reprinted in "Ideas and Opinions", Crown Publishers, Inc. 1954, pp 36 - 40. It also appears in Einstein's book "The World as I See It", Philosophical Library, New York, 1949, pp. 24 - 28. The emphasis in bold is mine.

"Everything that the human race has done and thought is concerned with the satisfaction of deeply felt needs and the assuagement of pain. One has to keep this constantly in mind if one wishes to understand spiritual movements and their development. Feeling and longing are the motive force behind all human endeavor and human creation, in however exalted a guise the latter may present themselves to us. Now what are the feelings and needs that have led men to religious thought and belief in the widest sense of the words? A little consideration will suffice to show us that the most varying emotions preside over the birth of religious thought and experience. With primitive man it is above all fear that evokes religious notions -- fear of hunger, wild beasts, sickness, death. Since at this stage of existence understanding of causal connections is usually poorly developed, the human mind creates illusory beings more or less analogous to itself on whose wills and actions these fearful happenings depend. Thus one tries to secure the favor of these beings by carrying out actions and offering sacrifices which, according to the tradition handed down from generation to generation, propitiate them or make them well disposed toward a mortal. In this sense I am speaking of a religion of fear. This, though not created, is in an important degree stabilized by the formation of a special priestly caste which sets itself up as a mediator between the people and the beings they fear, and erects a hegemony on this basis. In many cases a leader or ruler or a privileged class whose position rests on other factors combines priestly functions with its secular authority in order to make the latter more secure; or the political rulers and the priestly caste make common cause in their own interests.

"The social impulses are another source of the crystallization of religion. Fathers and mothers and the leaders of larger human communities are mortal and fallible. The desire for guidance, love, and support prompts men to form the social or moral conception of God. This is the God of Providence, who protects, disposes, rewards, and punishes; the God who, according to the limits of the believer's outlook, loves and cherishes the life of the tribe or of the human race, or even or life itself; the comforter in sorrow and unsatisfied longing; he who preserves the souls of the dead. This is the social or moral conception of God.

"The Jewish scriptures admirably illustrate the development from the religion of fear to moral religion, a development continued in the New Testament. The religions of all civilized peoples, especially the peoples of the Orient, are primarily moral religions. The development from a religion of fear to moral religion is a great step in peoples' lives. And yet, that primitive religions are based entirely on fear and the religions of civilized peoples purely on morality is a prejudice against which we must be on our guard. The truth is that all religions are a varying blend of both types, with this differentiation: that on the higher levels of social life the religion of morality predominates.

"Common to all these types is the anthropomorphic character of their conception of God. In general, only individuals of exceptional endowments, and exceptionally high-minded communities, rise to any considerable extent above this level. BUT THERE IS A THIRD STAGE OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE WHICH BELONGS TO ALL OF THEM, EVEN THOUGH IT IS RARELY FOUND IN A PURE FORM: I SHALL CALL IT COSMIC RELIGIOUS FEELING. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO ELUCIDATE THIS FEELING TO ANYONE WHO IS ENTIRELY WITHOUT IT, ESPECIALLY AS THERE IS NO ANTHROPOMORPHIC CONCEPTION OF GOD CORRESPONDING TO IT.

"The individual feels the futility of human desires and aims and the sublimity and marvelous order which reveal themselves both in nature and in the world of thought. Individual existence impresses him as a sort of prison and he wants to experience the universe as a single significant whole. The beginnings of cosmic religious feeling already appear at an early stage of development, e.g., in many of the Psalms of David and in some of the Prophets. Buddhism, as we have learned especially from the wonderful writings of Schopenhauer, contains a much stronger element of this.

"THE RELIGIOUS GENIUSES OF ALL AGES HAVE BEEN DISTINGUISHED BY THIS KIND OF RELIGIOUS FEELING, WHICH KNOWS NO DOGMA AND NO GOD CONCEIVED IN MAN'S IMAGE; so that there can be no church whose central teachings are based on it. Hence it is precisely among the heretics of every age that we find men who were filled with this highest kind of religious feeling and were in many cases regarded by their contemporaries as atheists, sometimes also as saints. Looked at in this light, men like Democritus, Francis of Assisi, and Spinoza are closely akin to one another.

"HOW CAN COSMIC RELIGIOUS FEELING BE COMMUNICATED FROM ONE PERSON TO ANOTHER, IF IT CAN GIVE RISE TO NO DEFINITE NOTION OF A GOD AND NO THEOLOGY? IN MY VIEW, IT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FUNCTION OF ART AND SCIENCE TO AWAKEN THIS FEELING AND KEEP IT ALIVE IN THOSE WHO ARE RECEPTIVE TO IT.

"We thus arrive at a conception of the relation of science to religion very different from the usual one. When one views the matter historically, one is inclined to look upon science and religion as irreconcilable antagonists, and for a very obvious reason. The man who is thoroughly convinced of the universal operation of the law of causation cannot for a moment entertain the idea of a being who interferes in the course of events -- provided, of course, that he takes the hypothesis of causality really seriously. He has no use for the religion of fear and equally little for social or moral religion. A God who rewards and punishes is inconceivable to him for the simple reason that a man's actions are determined by necessity, external and internal, so that in God's eyes he cannot be responsible, any more than an inanimate object is responsible for the motions it undergoes. Science has therefore been charged with undermining morality, but the charge is unjust. A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties and needs; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hopes of reward after death.

"It is therefore easy to see why the churches have always fought science and persecuted its devotees. On the other hand, I maintain that the cosmic religious feeling is the strongest and noblest motive for scientific research. Only those who realize the immense efforts and, above all, the devotion without which pioneer work in theoretical science cannot be achieved are able to grasp the strength of the emotion out of which alone such work, remote as it is from the immediate realities of life, can issue. What a deep conviction of the rationality of the universe and what a yearning to understand, were it but a feeble reflection of the mind revealed in this world, Kepler and Newton must have had to enable them to spend years of solitary labor in disentangling the principles of celestial mechanics! Those whose acquaintance with scientific research is derived chiefly from its practical results easily develop a completely false notion of the mentality of the men who, surrounded by a skeptical world, have shown the way to kindred spirits scattered wide through the world and through the centuries. ONLY ONE WHO HAS DEVOTED HIS LIFE TO SIMILAR ENDS CAN HAVE A VIVID REALIZATION OF WHAT HAS INSPIRED THESE MEN AND GIVEN THEM THE STRENGTH TO REMAIN TRUE TO THEIR PURPOSE IN SPITE OF COUNTLESS FAILURES. IT IS COSMIC RELIGIOUS FEELING THAT GIVES A MAN SUCH STRENGTH. A CONTEMPORARY HAS SAID, NOT UNJUSTLY, THAT IN THIS MATERIALISTIC AGE OF OURS THE SERIOUS SCIENTIFIC WORKERS ARE THE ONLY PROFOUNDLY RELIGIOUS PEOPLE."

We obviously don't exercise infinite power. There is more to magick than merely having a desire or belief. That is because we have many conflicting desires and beliefs on many levels. There is a level called, among other things, the Little Self. This roughly corresponds to the subconscious and the super ego. The ego, the part of ourselves which we think of as "I," is called the Middle Self. The Little Self is the gateway to the High Self, our connection with godhead and the universe. Infinite power lies with the High Self, but our access is through the Little Self which has its own ideas. The Little Self is aware of and accepts everything around it and everything you think, even when you are not aware. These perceptions build up very strong ideas in the Little Self. When these ideas are different from yours (those of the Middle Self), your ideas loose. To succeed, you must unify your will.

Of course, people rightfully complain that even if we do create our universe, it's still tough to make changes. That is because there is quite a bit of inertia to ideas that have been strongly supported since childhood (or before, if you accept past-lives). In an extreme example, the original "Peter Pan" had to be changed to keep from harming children. In the original version, the characters flew because "they believed." Many children attempted to fly and discovered the hard way that their Little Self did not agree. Things like a belief in gravity may be possible to overcome, but no one will argue that it's commonly done.

This example sounds silly because our experience of gravity is so compelling that it seems ridiculous to consider it to be "merely a thought construct." But another belief that is nearly as widespread is that of poverty. This is a significantly less daunting belief which many have overcome. As long as you believe you are poor, you will be. This is often a very strong belief. Many cannot even genuinely imagine themselves as being wealthy. But, because it is not beyond reasonable comprehension, it is possible to reprogram your Little Self-- much as it's possible for left-handers to learn to be right-handed. Magick is an effective way to do this.

If you are unconvinced, consider how many little messages you heard when growing up, which you now believe on some level. Frequent messages, especially with children, usually become true. If you have heard all your life that you are poor or dumb or unsuccessful, eventually you believe it and eventually it's true. You probably know many people with an unjustifiably poor self image. This is an image which their Little Selves accepted, probably during childhood when they couldn't protect themselves. That is how messages to the Little Self work against you. And the Little Self is aware of everything, even when you are asleep. It also believes everything it hears. So the next time that you hear that you're not good or that you need to buy a product that you don't really want, consciously give your Little Self a different message. Talk to it and tell it what you want to believe. This is what makes your universe, so make it the way you want it. When you have a particularly powerful belief to overcome, then you must send a powerful message. That is the role of magick.

Celtic Thelema You Dont Have To Be Egyptian

I've always been enchanted by the images and ideas of the Book of the Law. As alleged spirit-transmissions go, I find it the most inspiring and poetic item that actually relates to the kind of ideas I want in my Paganism. Those who may not know the story of the 'reception' of this three-chapter prose poem by Aleister Crowley can read the orthodox account here.

1: Bare Bones Thelemic myth

Crowley's imagination was trained in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and the fashion of that organization followed its times, favoring the newly discovered (or newly translated, anyway) deities of ancient Egypt. Initiation rites were performed using the aid of the Egyptian deity powers and the entire magical system depended heavily on the Graeco-Egyptian complex of spiritual powers. As a result much of Crowley's magic, and the magic surrounding Thelema has become filled with images from Khem.

However, the basic god-forms and symbols of the Book of the Law have little in particular to do with ancient Egypt. There are five primary figures in Liber AL (the esoteric name for the BotL):

NUIT: (the name is the French word for 'night) is the goddess of Infinite Space and Infinite Stars, the cosmic body of all, in which all live and move and have their being.

HADIT: (the name of several Canaanite king-deities) The infinitesimal Point in the Center, the ever-present cosmic throne that allows the individual to appear out of Nuit's starry sky.

Thus, Nuit is the Body of Space, and Hadit the Central Star. Liber AL says "Every man and every woman is a star."

The primary triad of Thelemic deity is completed by the form most usually called "RA-HOOR-KHUIT" This the most directly Egyptian of the basic forms, derived from Crowley's vision of the Stele of Revealing. Ra-Hoor-Khuit is a form of the Egyptian god Horus (Heru, Har or Hoor more accurately in Khemetic). The name means something like "Horus-Ra of the Horizon", identifying the warrior-god Horus with the sunrise moment. The Book also describes Ra-Hoor-Khuit as the 'Minister of Hoor-par-kraat' and that latter form is the child-horus, also an important figure, sometimes called the God of Silence. Together these forms are called the Crowned and Conquering Child.

The Crowned and Conquering Child is a central image in Thelema, seen as the power of Initiation and wisdom for the New Aeon that it heralds. It is this symbol which takes Ra-Hoor-Khuit out of the realm of Egyptian polytheology into a wider potential for cultural expression. It will be a key to our location of Thelema in a Gaelic mythic context.

In addition to this primary triad there are two secondary god-forms, derived fairly directly from the Apocalypse of St John, at the end of the Christian New Testament.

BABALON: is the Scarlet Woman, who rides the back of the Great Beast, bearing in her hand the cup from which she is drunken on the blood of the saints. The spelling, incidentally, is from the Enochian-language material.

THE BEAST: is the male counterpart to Babalon - the Great Dragon, the beast of seven heads. He is the vehicle of the Goddess, her balance and counterpart.

These two figures are often described as the priestess and priest of Thelemic rites, or as the operative daemons that express the earthly will of Nuit and Hadit.

2: Gaelic Thelemic Forms

If we look for the kind of primal figures that we find in Nuit and Hadit among Indo-European sources, and especially among Celtic cultures, we run into the difficulty that no Celtic creation myth has been preserved. The Thelemic primal powers contain an unspoken creation model in which the pre-existing cosmic material is activated by the central kindled point, and manifestation thus occurs. Thelema is nothing if not phallo-kteic, and this should be interpreted sexually to get what they mean by it.

If we look for this sort of primal God and Goddess in Celtic lore we must begin on scholastically shaky ground (we'll get to firmer territory by and by).

The primal mother goddess in Irish lore is named something like Ana, or Dana, or Danu, or Don. (It's hard to render Irish words into English sentences because their spelling changes depending on grammar). This is most famously remembered in the name of the 'tribe of gods' from the Irish Book of Invasion, the Tuatha De Danann, which means 'Nation of the Goddess Danu'.

Danu is the Mother of the Gods in the Irish tale. She is never depicted, has no tales or deeds. However the linguistic evidence is interesting. The word 'dan' survives in Irish as a complex term that can mean 'art' or 'gift' or 'song' or 'fate'. I've personally been at this so long that I can't remember whether there's a good reason for me associating Danu with the Starry-Sky-As-Ocean, but I find her an acceptable parallel to the Thelemic Nuit.

The equally sketchily-drawn primal father in Celtic lore has names that include 'Bel'. Sometimes that sound refers to warfare (cognate to the Latin bellus) and sometimes it means 'beautiful' (cognate to the Latin bella) Especially in the latter cases the male deity referred to seems to be related either to the sun or to fire. In either case we see the image of the light at the center, the point within the circle. This will do for our Gaelic Hadit.

To find the Beast in Gaelic lore we need look no further than the Bull, the Stallion and the Stag. Each of these are specific deities in British or Gaelic lore. The Stallion, especially, is the Mount of the Queen, and is present in the god called In Dagda. That title means "The Good God" in the sense of good at everything. He is multi-skilled, a Druid, a Warrior and a Man of the Plow, his phallus legendary and his harp magical. One of the Dagda's 'real' names is Eochaid (roughly 'yo-khee') meaning 'stallion', and he has a famous meeting with the Red Goddess as described below. He is also called the Red Lord of Secret Wisdom (Ruadh Rofessa) and is a sorcerer and trickster.

The stag leads us toward the much-misunderstood figure of Cernunnos, the Antlered God. While his most famous depiction, on the Gundestrup Cauldron, might make him appear to be a 'god of animals', most of his depictions in Gaulish lands show him with symbols of wealth - bags of coins, fruits of the earth. Personally I am inclined to equate the Antlered God with the Underworld Father (Dis Pater) who is sometimes called the father of the tribes. Also, despite modern witchy inclinations, Cernunnos is never depicted naked or ithyphallic, though he bears that suggestive ram-headed serpent...

While bulls play an important role in Gaelic story and Gaulish imagery, the Bull-god is a little harder to find. In Britain bull-horned gods are gods of war and of the hunt, many with names based on that 'bel' particle. There is little sign of the Dionysus/Shiva bull-complex, many of the kingship and phallic functions perhaps transferred to the stallion.

The Thelemic Beast is, I think, best depicted in the Gaelic stallion-god. That is certainly the 'beast whereon she rideth'. Some mileage might be gotten from composing some sort of chimera, some bull-horned horse or multi-headed mount, of course.

Gaelic lore plainly shows us powerful images of the Thelemic earthly feminine power, called Babalon. On the divine plane she is called Morrigan, the Red Woman. Morrigan means "Queen of Spirits" and she is a goddess of war, sexual power and sorcery. She is called a war-witch, associated with the choosing of the slain and the fate of heroes. In another tale the Red Woman arises from the Underworld bearing the Cauldron of Rebirth, in which the bones of heroes are boiled to restore them to life. It is quite fitting to say that her Cauldron is overflowing with the Blood of the Heroes.

One famous story takes place during the war between the Gods and the 'Titans' (Fomoire) of Gaelic lore. Dagda keeps an appointment to meet with the Morrigan, and the two couple, with the Goddess' feet on either bank of the land. From their coupling a river was born. By making that alliance, Dagda secures the help of Morrigan and her army of sorcerers for the battle. Despite the inclination to the missionary in common imagination, we can surely envision this as the Red Goddess riding the Stallion.

On a more human plane, Irish tales show us the figure of Medb the mighty, queen of Connaught, who stands as the enemy of Ulster in the famous Cattle Raid of Cooley. She is described as a warrior queen and inspirer of men in battle. It was said of her that she never had a man without another waiting in his shadow. Medb's name means 'mead' or more broadly 'intoxication'. She is a memory of the place of the Celtic queen as binder of the war-band. The ancient custom was for the local Queen to bear a cup of mead to each man of the band, offering it in exchange for fealty to her and the leader. Celtic mythographers refer to this figure as 'sovereignty' and she is often a goddess unto herself. Medb, though distorted through a monkish lens, stands as a figure of Sovereignty, the Lady of the Cup of Intoxication.

Finally we come to the Crowned and Conquering Child. In classical Thelemic iconography we find the hawk-headed warrior Horus in this role. However in Gaelic lore we can see a powerful expression of it in the so-called Wonder Child. This figure has a number of specific expressions in Celtic story.

The Wonder Child is the Coming King, who rises from obscurity, through trials to sit enthroned. The most notable expression of that formula is in the Irish god called Lugh. Lugh is the child of a Titan mother and a father of the Gods, and is marked from the first to be the destroyer of the chaos-monster of the tales. He performs his first deeds when still a youth, and is called things like "Long-arm' and 'master of all skills'. Lugh bears a spear connected with the lightning-bolt, and becomes King of the Gods by the end of the tale.

The Wonder Child appears in other tales as well. Always born a bastard, always raised by a sorcerer, initiated by the Red Woman and crowned by her Sovereignty, his story repeats across Celtic cultures. Cuchullain partakes of his nature, doing his mighty feats before ever he has his first whiskers. Aengus Og is another inheritor of the Dagda's house. Later, The Arthur tales and the tale of Taliesin continue the fame of the Wonder Child.

It would not be a complicated matter to assemble the Thelemic Cult in a Gaelic context. Primal Night and Sun are Danu and Bel. Their children, the Dagda and the Morrigan are Babalon and the Beast. Shining Lugh, the Conquering Child, completes the pentagram. Looking at the Thelemic powers through a new cultural lens provides many new opportunities for mysteries and understandings.

3: A Few Random Mysteries

o The Zelator Formula.

In the mystery rites of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, from which Thelema draws a great deal of ideological DNA, the very first initiatory rite admits the student to the degree of 'Neophyte'. This rite is based on the admission rites of Masonic lodges, and has all the elements of later initiatory inventions such as those of Traditional British Wicca. At one key moment the candidate for initiation, who has been 'hoodwinked' (blindfolded) has the blindfold removed and hears the words "Child of Earth, long have you dwelt in darkness - quit now the darkness and seek the day." The panoply of the temple is revealed, and the goal is to create a moment of imprinting for the initiate.

This formula becomes a central method of practical magic inside the GD system, as learned by Crowley prior to the creation of Thelema. In the consecration of talismans the material basis is wrapped in dark cloth and revealed at the moment of consecration, with the same words. Even in the evocation of spirits the Z formula, as it is called brings the spirit into manifestation.

There is a nearly direct parallel with a Gaelic poetic method of incubation. In that formula the poet undertakes to craft a poem, perhaps with an oracular intent. She chooses a dark place - a windowless hut, or a cave or even a mound, and makes her bed within. She places a heavy stone upon her chest which would both help prevent sleep and mandate regulation of the breath - great trance-induction device. The poet then spends the night in the darkness. When the time comes, the poet comes to the door of the hut at dawn, and beholds the sun through the traditionally eastern-facing door. In those first rays the poem is pronounced, fully-formed and magically potent.

It is surely possible that Scottish Freemasons knew this lore directly, and that it entered Masonic, and thus GD, ritual by an ordinary route. I do find the parallel interesting though. I have used the formula of Gaelic incubation as a basis for several types of practical magic working myself, including the Cauldron Rites included in my books.

o The Grail Hallows

It's no secret that the Golden Dawn's formulation of the Four Elemental Weapons, which became an immediate part of Crowley's Thelemic symbolism and ritual, was related in part to the Gaelic tale of the Four Treasures of the Tuatha De Danann.

The Four Treasures are the Spear of Striking, which never misses its target and returns to its owner's hand; the Sword of Victory, which can never be defeated; the Cauldron of Rebirth, which brings slain warriors back to life to fight again; and the Stone of Destiny, which determines who is fit to be King. These have no particular elemental correspondence in Gaelic lore. In the Celtic Twilight of Yeats and Mathers they became corresponded to the Four Tools of the GD brand of hermetic ritual.

Mathers began with the various sets of symbols applied to the four suits of playing cards in renaissance Europe, and formalized them as the set popularized by the generation of occultists just before him. However he 'occult-ized' them further by making them correspond to his ritual weapons. Thus the 'Money' suit became ritualized as 'Pentacles', 'Staves' or 'Clubs' became 'Wands', etc. However the final wave of influence on Thelema was in Crowley's choice to use the Grail Hallows in his Gnostic Mass.

The stories of the Holy Grail begin in Celtic Wales, and seem to be directly descended from previous generations of tales concerning the Cauldron of Wonders, which the Hero-King must rescue from the Underworld. In later Grail romance tales, the holy vessel is accompanied by a bloody spear, a head on a platter (or just the platter), and the sword that severed the head. These were interpreted through a Christian lens in medieval tales, but Nineteenth-century scholars were already discussing them in relation to the Gaelic Treasures.

To look back at out Gaelic cultus of Thelema, to arm the Priest with the Spear is to make him stand for Lugh - the Crowned and Conquering Child. To arm the priestess with the Chalice is to make her stand for Morrigan, the Red Goddess. Cuchullain and Medb, Arthur and Morgana, the formula is as Celtic as can be. One might even have the priest performing incubation in his dark tomb before appearing to work the rite.

So, I don't mean to propose anything very serious here. I haven't the time, myself, to take up a cult of Celtic Thelema. Still, it wouldn't be hard to do. Mix in a trifle of Wild Hunt or Fairy Rade, and the Witch's Sabbath, and you might be getting somewhere...

Models Of Magic The Spirit Model

This is purportedly the oldest model of magic though it may very well have come into existence after or simultaneously with the energy model. We can find it worldwide in Shamanic cultures as well as in many religions. Its basic premise is the existence of an otherworld inhabited by more or less autonomous entities such as spirits, angels, demons, gods etc. The shaman or magician is someone who can enter this otherworld at will, who has traveled widely in it, knows its language and customs and as made friends, smitten enemies and/or acquired allies and servitors there. This is important as all magic is of these entities' making. The modern German word for witch, "Hexe" (f.) illustrates this rather neatly if we take a closer look at its etymology. It derives from Old High German "hagazussa" which translates as "fence rider". The hagazussa is riding the "fence between the worlds" i.e. she is at home in the world of everyday life as well as in the magical otherworld of spirits.

In the spirit model magic is seen as being effected by these entities who are usually invisible, at least to the average punter, and it is the shaman's or magician's task to make them put his will into effect. This may be done by prayer, by barter, by cajoling or even - vide medieval demon magic - by the application of magical force, threats and pressure. The otherworld may have its own geography but it is usually considered to coexist with the world of everyday life. The key to entering it is an altered state of consciousness, controlled trance or ecstasy of which the shaman is an expert.

The spirit model has prevailed in traditionalist or Dogmatic magic until today, some of its most noted exponents being Franz Bardon and, at least to a great extent, Aleister Crowley.

Magick 04 Elements And Forces

The Ancients divided the world into four basic principles or *elements* -- earth, water, fire, and air. That viewpoint has mostly changed with advances of science, but the four elements are still accepted in magick, for they are more closely linked with emotions, the human psyche, and with nature than are modern explanations of the world. These *magical elements* are also of some importance in astrology. Many occultists think of the magical elements as forces, or as *qualities* of energy; especially within the astral world. Each element has a symbol and color. (Common symbols are -- fire: a triangle pointing up; air: a triangle pointing up and with a horizontal line through the middle of it; water: a triangle pointing down; earth: a triangle pointing down and with a horizontal line through the middle of it.) Colors of the elements are -- earth: brown and green; water: blue; fire: red; air: yellow...The Eastern tattvic system uses different symbols and colors. (The tattvic symbols are briefly described later on in this course.) The elements are often used in magick ritual.

Magick sees relationships between things. These relationships are called 'correspond-ences'. Although magical correspondences are not literally equal to one another, you can think of them that way (such as gold equals sun). Tables of these relationships, called 'Correspondence Tables', are available (an important one is Crowley's '777'). Thus one thing or symbol can be used to suggest another. This is important in magick, for the magician may surround himself with as many appropriate correspondences as he can to vividly affect the senses; thus making his magical contact with the inner planes more lucid.

The magical elements have correspondences with the tarot cards as the four suits. The four quarters (directions of the universe as used in magick ritual) and the Archangels also correspond with these same elements:

Element: earth
Suit: pentacles
Quarter: north
Archangel: Uriel

Element: water
Suit: cups
Quarter: west
Archangel: Gabriel

Element: fire
Suit: wands
Quarter: south
Archangel: Michael

Element: air
Suit: swords
Quarter: east
Archangel: Raphael

Astrological signs also correspond with the elements. Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn are earth signs. Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces are water signs. Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are fire signs. Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius are air signs.

Elementals

The magical elements are said to be peopled by spirits and mythological entities called elementals or nature spirits. These are grouped into four main categories:

Gnome (earth): dwarfs, elves, brownies, lepricauns
Undine (water): nymphs, tritons, mermaids, sirens
Salamander (fire): jin (genies), storm, hobgoblins, harpies
Sylph (air): fairies, angels, mermen

Elementals are usually only visible to those with clairvoyant sight and are more likely to be seen at night in the mountains or country away from cities -- especially if you are tired or sleepy. Although elementals exist naturally, it is also possible to create one which will exist for a limited time -- no elemental has immortality. A created elemental is called an 'artificial elemental'.

To the Ancients, elementals were the physical explanation of the universe. However, some contemporary occultists see them only as symbols for forces and otherwise not 'real' at all. Another word sometimes used for elemental is 'familiar' (usually in medieval witchcraft); the term is ambiguous, as it might merely be an ordinary household pet such as a dog or cat.

Yin Yang

Chinese philosophy and acupuncture talk of yin yang. This is the idea of polarity, or opposite pairs, as shown --

The list could go on. In Chinese literature it is quite long. Some occultists suggest every-thing can be similarly arranged into related opposite pairs.

Simple Magick

Here is a simple magical technique you may wish to try. It is a variation of affirmation, which was discussed in an earlier lesson...To help you to achieve your goal (magical or otherwise), find a word or short phase which sums up what it is that you want to accomplish. Write the word (or phrase) down 10 times each day until you achieve success.

Thelemic Epiphany The Feast Days Of The Law

The April 8th, 9th and 10th feast days in the Thelemic liturgical calendar mark the reception of the verses of "Liber Legis" from their praeterhuman source, the 93 Current or Aiwass. This event, known as the Cairo Working, took place in Cairo, Egypt, in 1904 E.V., most likely at what was then called the Savoy Hotel -- it later came to be known as the Bahler Building, in what is now Talat Harb Square.

THE SAVOY, 1901

This hotel was also where the couple involved -- Aleister Crowley and his bride Rose Kelly -- had performed a ceremony to connect with the Holy Current of the New Aeon, all at Rose's insistence, she being under the inspiration of this being she called Aiwass. It was she, not Crowley, that gave us the name, "Aiwass", in the first place. Odd -- given that this communication always derived exclusively from her mind from the get-go -- that Aleister would, decades later, claim Aiwass as being inextricably linked with his own subconscious, or his "Holy Guardian Angel" to use the archaic language of his day. Yet it was always his Scarlet Women who served as its seers and actually transmitted its inspiration. It might be much more accurate to say that -- whatever it was -- this was a Current of Genius at work on both of their minds, not merely one or the other.

While we don't know which room it is in which they stayed during the Cairo Working, we do know from Crowley's account in "the Equinox of the Gods "that it had a window that opened onto the street. Once he was convinced that Rose's unexpected contact -- stemming perhaps from his performance of the ancient "Ritual of the Bornless One" (i.e. the Preliminary Invocation of the Goetia) in the King's Chamber of the Great Pyramid -- was genuine, he determined to establish such contact for himself, and immediately constructed a ceremony by which to achieve this objective, along the same lines as other such ceremonies learned in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and elsewhere. Rose, however, scrapped these preparations wholesale, insisting that she -- in spite of having absolutely no knowledge of such matters -- delineate the necessary procedure, not he. She called for the performance of a ritual of her devising in their makeshift temple chamber in their ground-level hotel room, with the window open wide to all passers-by in the street before them, a ceremony performed in the middle of day. He consented to her seemingly absurd demands; the ritual was a disaster. So they repeated the attempt later at night, and without the interference of spectators it was met with great success. Butsuccess in what regard exactly?

Rose identified her discarnate messenger -- i.e. Aiwass -- as being the "minister" or projection of the Supernal Consciousness of Horus. It is likely that even she failed to grasp what this really means. One should not take this as a reference to a personal deity of some kind; for the crux of Thelemic religion is that there is no personal god: divine force is impersonal, at once indwelling yet overlying consciousness and transcending thought and particular temporal limitation, encompassing as it does not merely ourselves but all living things equally across unlimited dimensions. Horus (or Ra-Hoor-Khuit) is the next step from the Osirian Age -- i.e. the Age of the Slain God, of which Christianity was one of the major religious vehicles. Ancient Egyptian symbology was incorporated here mainly because the divine form is given as half-anthropomorphic and half-theriomorphic: the doctrinal consequence being that humanity is not the ideal form, but merely one of many -- no better or worse than any other animal. And the Transcendent Reality exists to the perception of all, not just to the most rational. In fact, it is often man's own reasoning faculty that obstructs his realization of the Transcendent Reality; it is only in brief flashes of rare inspiration of Genius or mystical Bliss that one overcomes the bundled ties of rational fixation and personal limitation to achieve the Illimitable View.

Since Thelemic religion is atheistic -- vide "Liber Legis "vss.1:11, 1:20-21, 1:26-30, and 2:23 -- these divine figures that are presented in "The Book of the Law "as parts of the Thelemic cosmology are clearly representative not of objective entities but of the latent forces of consciousness of which we ordinarily remain unaware the better part of our lives -- the occult region of the mind that exists independently of the brain, and that carries on after death. This Supernal Current of Nuit/Hadit/Ra-Hoor-Khuit -- or Babalon/Beast/Baphomet -- projects from its overlying position as the 93 Current into the heart of every man and every woman, and crystallizes in each as an unique mystic gem, forming a holy Bud-Will to be realized and nourished intellectually and experientially via whatever means suit one's own nature, where it will grow into the Holy Supernal Will -- "on earth as it is in heaven".

Yet it is important to understand that the Supernal Mind -- while it is embedded within us in an inert form (until the forces of Initiated Wisdom activate it) -- is a part of us of which we are totally unaware normally. It is not a personal god worthy of adoration or demanding appeasement, however; it is our own secret Self.

The real Genius behind the Cairo Working, and the true Author of "The Book of the Law" -- Aiwass -- manifested before Rose Kelly and Aleister Crowley on these three days not merely to inject its inspiration into their minds, and so to guide their hands as they penned the verses of its holy message -- for here was a message of import not merely to them personally but to all humanity. This was outlined as the Way for the advancement of the species; either we go this Way, and evolve beyond the primitive survivalist mindset, or else we allow ourselves to submit in senseless devotion to superstitious theologies and tribalistic xenophobia, to our eventual demise as a race.

Some Thelemites will commemorate the writing of the three chapters of the Law of Thelema by dramatic recreation, with the reading aloud of chapter 1 of "Liber Legis "on April 8th, chapter 2 on April 9th, and chapter 3 on April 10th. But we have at our fingertips so many more possibilities in this technologically advanced era of ours. Why not spice things up by utilizing LCD screens displaying animated images, and sound systems conveying repeating chants and atmospheric and mood-driving music at appropriate intervals, with a recording of a recitation of the verses of the book digitally altered so as to be more evocative of the forces we are stirring -- e.g., more feminine with the first chapter, much darker with the second, and ferociously triumphant with the last.

However you choose to celebrate these holy days of the Epiphany of the Law -- or Thelemic Epiphany as I call it -- whether by some elaborate liturgical exhibition or simply by meditating on the message of Aiwass, may 93 be with thee, and may you come thereby to the accomplishment of your true Will, the Great Work, the Summum Bonum, True Wisdom and Perfect Happiness.

Bro. Richard Kaczynski, a serious student of Crowley's unpublished work who recently completed his biography of Crowley, obtained this lecture from Christina Foyle, a member of the English bookdealing family renowned for her leterary luncheon lectures. Her family's London shop remaindered Crowley's Magick in Theory and Practice. He noted in his diary for August 17, 1932 "Saw Foyle - asked to speak at lunch Sept. 15 on "The Philosophy of Magick." His hope was, as he wrote an aquaintance a few days later, "to sell a few hundred sets of my treatise Magick." Christina Foyle told Kaczynski that she arranged the luncheon at Grosvenor House even though many people warned her off because of Crowley's reputation (her usual fare was Auden, Eliot et al.). One attendee, Rode Macaulay, remarked "I don't mind what he does, as long as he doesn't turn himself into a goat." Crowley's diary for Sept. 15, the day of the luncheon, records "Made a good speech!" - HB

Enochian Magick And Freemasonry

Enochian Magick also plays no part in Freemasonry. Enochian Magick has its roots in Elizabethan England with the work of astronomer and English court advisor Dr. John Dee (1527-1608) and his associate Sir Edward Kelley. Dee wanted to recover the wisdom he believed to be in the lost books of earlier times, including the then-fabled Book of Enoch, which he believed described a system of magic. During the years from 1581 to 1585, Dee, and later Kelley, performed "magical operations" involving fervent prayers to God and the archangels, and the use of a scrying stone. Kelly described what appeared on the stone while Dee made extensive notes.

A portion of these papers, concerning the Angelic Calls, Tablets and Liber Scientiae, were acquired with Dee’s library by Robert Cotton. This part was published in Casaubon’s A True and Faithful Relation. The earlier portions concerning the Heptarchy and Liber Loagaeth found their way into the hands of Elias Ashmole in 1672. Ashmole’s collection eventually passed to the British Library (Sloane MS 3188. 3677; Ashmole MS. 422, art. 2. &c.). These texts have nothing to do with the beliefs or practices of Freemasonry, nor with the original Enochian literature.

According to it's own statements and documents Ordo Templi Orientis members practice and swear to defend these "principles of Thelema" as spelled out in The Book of the Law.

A legal document sent to the Equal Opportunity Commission of Victoria from a Melbourne OTO member, Brent Gray, states that, "The Book of the Law is the primary religious text of Thelema."

"The OTO is an international body of men and women dedicated to the promotion of Thelema. These principles are taught through a graded series of degrees, or initiations, and understood through practical engagement with these mysteries in the initiate's own life."

The following are excerpts from the Book of the Law. "I will give you their flesh to eat" “Sacrifice cattle, little and big: after a child.", “damn them who pity!”, "Kill and torture”, "Compassion is the vice of kings".

Having been advised by an officer of the Equal Opportunity Commission of Victoria that him dealing with this matter as a member of any of the groups affiliated with the OTO, (being the Freemasons, Order of the Eastern Star [a.k.a. "Lucifer"], Knights Templar, etc.) would constitute a conflict of interest, gaiaguys wrote the ACT Magistrate's court twice seeking statements confirming that no conflict of interest would be present in this case.

Those requests were completely ignored. Do we assume that Magistrate Burns is also a Freemason?

Gaiaguys has just sent a letter to the Federal Treasurer asking about the legal, not-for-profit status of the Ordo Templi Orientis and asking how long it will be before this "we have a right to kill those who would thwart us", organisation has it's legal, religious, tax exempt status removed!

We have still had no response to our May 24th registered letters to the ACT Chief Minister and the ACT Human Rights Commissioner calling for action against this criminal group who enjoy legal immunity in Australia.

Similarly we have still had no response to our May 24th registered letters to the Victorian Attorney General and head of the Equal Opportunity Commission of Victoria in relation to the OTO's use of Victoria's ludicrous Religious Vilification laws against us, (although the Premier responded saying that we should get legal advice.)

Nor have we heard from the Victorian Police Minister, Police Commissioner or Assistant Commissioner in relation to a report we drew up concerning bloody rites of Babalon which were scheduled to be performed by the OTO in Victoria on the Queen's Birthday weekend. And of course, we did not receive any acknowledgement of our many critical points in the original February 19th 2005 response we made to the Equal Opportunity Commission of Victoria in response to its enquiries prompted by the religious vilification charges made against us by the OTO.

Rather than serving to protect the community from this violent and cruel network, Magistrate Burns' decision has demonstrated once again just how stunningly widespread and complete is the high-level protection enjoyed by the Ordo Templi Orientis Freemasons in Australia.

(NOTE: The prophet of the Ordo Templi Orientis, Aleister Crowley, said in his commentary* on the Book of the Law, that every man, woman and intermediately-sexed individual is free to interpret and communicate self by means of any sexual practices at all, regardless of ethical, legal or religious concerns, etc, and that all children shall be accustomed from infancy to witness every type of sexual act. We have found another extraordinary composition of his which sheds more light on the kinds of sexual practices he had in mind!

WARNING! This piece by OTO Prophet Crowley is extremely obscene and revolting, and we only include it on our site now in the hope of finally waking up the people of Australia to what is going on here with the approval of our elected representatives and public servants, etc., while child victims, of the sorts of crimes described in the Book of the Law, are betrayed by the Police in Victoria. (Interesting in relation to the South Australian case which blew up in Parliament recently are a couple of harassment emails we received coinciding with our local Internet Service Provider being threatened on two occasions by OTO solicitors. (Understand that whoever wants to send scary emails can't simply do something blatant.) On the first occasion, December 3rd, 2004 we received a "Tsunami warning" email which included some coded messages. On the second occasion, June 21st, when OTO solicitor Jan Moerkerke threatened Nornet again we received one including the phrase "rise and shine" which also included coded messages. What is most interesting is that someone working with the activists in the South Australian case also received a coded "rise and shine" email, along with a reference to a powerful hand gun, just as things were hotting up over there.)

Meditation Of Healing And Radiating Love

This meditation can be used for Angelic healing. I am practicing this meditation for all the people who are in need of wellbeing. You are welcome to use it. Let us send love and light to all those in need.

Begin by visualizing a sparkling celestial white light in front of you, breathing in and out, as you breathe in this angelic white light, feel the angelic light energy expanding and surrounding you. You feel a peaceful relaxing energy and as you continue to breathe gently you see the angelic light expansion is ever increasing within and around your body.

Now speak from your heart, and make your intention known to God, the Angels, and the Archangels: we call upon the Archangel Raphael and all the Angels of healing to work with people who are in need of wellness. We call on Archangels, the Angels, and Angelic hosts of white light to assist us and provide love to all minds, and hearts, and where physical healing is required now. (Visualize all people in Haiti).

You notice a large quartz crystal above your head, from this crystal a beam of white divine light slowly descends into your heart filling you with beautiful green emerald light. As the light fills all your heart you now see the Archangel Raphael’s emerald light radiating from your heart sending its beams of healing love towards all those who are in need. See the healing green and white lights swirling outwardly, radiating toward others. Visualize and see all survivors, adults and children, being showered with the white light and their hearts blessed with the healing and loving emerald light, you see that all healers, doctors, service workers and all individuals are being blessed with the white light and are supported with strength, power and angelic guidance to provide support and healing.

We pray and send healing light to all souls that have passed on and have been carried and comforted by their Angels and loved ones and are now in a place of peace, love, and in the company of God and Angels and all Light beings. We pray and send healing light to all those who grieve so they may find calmness and consolation. We pray and send healing and blessings of light to all Earth Angels, that can provide help and support and be of service at this time.

Now we give thanks to God and the Angels for the blessings of love, comfort, peace and healings received. And so it is. Amen.

Magick 05 Chakras And Meditation

According to East Indian philosophy, man possesses seven major *chakras* or psychic centers on his body. Each of these forms a bridge, link, or energy transformer; changing pure (higher) energy into various forms, and connecting the four bodies (i.e. spiritual, mental, astral, and physical) together. The chakras are located along the nadies (a network of psychic nerves or channels) and follow the autonomic nervous system along the spinal cord. Chakras correlate with major acupuncture points along the 'governing vessel meridian' (acupuncture term). The seven major chakras are connected together by three major nadies which are parallel and near each other. The middle nadi is called *sushumna* and it has neutral characteristics. The nadi on the left (i.e. nearest your left hand) is the *ida* nadi which has yin characteristics. On the other side of sushumna (nearest your right hand) is the *pingala* nadi, having yang qualities.

Chakras are visible to clairvoyant sight as variously colored rotating circles or funnels. In the East they are described as petaled flowers or lotuses. Sources disagree on the colors.

The first chakra, located at the base of the spine at the perineum is the *root chakra*, muladhara. It primarily relates to the element of earth and to psychic smell.

The second chakra, known as the *sacral center*, svadhisthana, is located above and behind the genitals. Its dominant element is water, and it is related to psychic taste.

Third of the chakras is the *solar plexus*, manipura, located at the navel and correspond-ing with the emotions and with the element of fire; also with psychic sight (clairvoyance).

The *heart chakra*, anahata, is the fourth chakra, located over the heart and correspond-ing with the element of air, and also with psychic touch.

The fifth chakra is the *throat chakra*, vishuddha, located at the base of the throat (thyroid) and corresponding with psychic hearing (clairaudience).

The remaining two chakras are very important. They relate mostly to elevated states of consciousness. The *frontal chakra*, (or 'third eye') ajna, the sixth chakra, is located between, and slightly above, the eyebrows. Ajna is the center of psychic powers and can produce many psychic effects. Meditation on ajna is said to cure nervousness.

Finally, the *crown chakra*, sahasrara, located atop the head, (pineal gland) is the seventh chakra. It is referred to as the thousand-petaled lotus and corresponds with astral projection and enlightenment.

There are also many minor chakras throughout the body. Each chakra has a sound (letter) and a pitch which is sometimes used to invoke it.
The Tattvas
Some occultists prefer to describe the magical elements as tattvas according to the Eastern system. Notice that these symbols and colors are generally different than the western symbols and colors for the elements.

Yoga
Yoga originated in India. It is a physical or mental discipline designed to condition and invigorate the mind and body. There are many kinds of yoga, but they may be generally divided into three main types...

Hathayoga--affect the mind through the body using physical exercises; improve physical health and endurance.

Rajayoga-affect the mind through mental training; Improve concentration.

Mantrayoga --affect the mind through chanting and affirmation; achieve relaxation.
Meditation
This is a much touted area of the occult. There are many meditation techniques, and many claims made for the benefits of meditation. Basically, meditation has two functions -- relaxation, and perhaps, improved concentration. There are two main types...

1) concentration meditation (focusing),
2) insight meditation (mindfulness).

Most kinds of meditation are the concentrative type. One simply focuses his attention upon a single physical object (such as a candle flame); upon a sensation (such as that felt while walking or breathing); upon an emotion (such as reverence or love); upon a mantra spoken aloud or even silently; or upon a visualization (as in chakra meditation, (see below)...Concentration meditation is, simply put, a form of self-hypnosis.

A mantra (or mantrum) is one or more words or syllables which are repeated -- often chanted -- aloud...A simple yet powerful mantra is to vibrate the mystical word 'OM'. This mantra has long been associated in India with the godhead/unity. Use it to aid in tuning into universal vibrations which promote feelings of harmony, peace, and well-being. Use it before magick ritual to 'get into the mood' and afterward to 'dismiss the forces'. You vibrate a mantra by saying it slowly aloud in a lower--pitched voice than your normal speech, and a more or less constant pitch as well. Let the sound fade at the end of the mantra. A powerful one such as 'OM' will seem to vibrate the air around you. It should be vocalized for 5-10 seconds and repeated a number of times with a few seconds rest between each vocalization. Chanting of mantras may cause slight dizziness from hyperventilation.

The other main type of meditation-insight meditation-is the analysis of thoughts and feelings in such a way as to cause realization of the subjectivity and illusion of experience. This is done in an effort to attain transcendental awareness. Such statements as, 'This body is not me', fall under this category. Buddhist meditations are usually of this type.
Chakra Meditation
There is a special type of concentrative meditation which we will call 'Chakra meditation'. This is basically Kundalini yoga -- the practice of causing psychic energy (kundalini) to flow up sushumna, energizing the various chakras along the way. The practice, consider-ed dangerous by some, will produce definite physiological sensations and psychological effects if continued long enough. It should not be attempted by epileptics or persons with an unstable mental or physical condition, or with heart disease. Certain drugs and medic-ations, such as those used to treat epilepsy may retard progress. Although the technique is very simple, it may eventually produce powerful results. Results may at first appear hours after the practice during sleep. As each chakra is energized by this practice, it is said to add occult powers (sidhis), until at last the crown chakra is reached, and with it, full enlightenment is attained. Sometimes kundalini awakens all by itself.

To practice this chakra meditation, you simply concentrate on the chakras, beginning with the root chakra, and moving progressively up, as you visualize psychic energy from the root chakra traveling up shushumna and vivifying each higher chakra. As we mentioned the chakras have certain properties associated with them, so that this type of visualization may 'raise consciousness', promote astral projection, and other things -- once you have reached ajna and eventually the crown chakra. You might typically meditate in this fashion for 15 minutes to a half-hour a day. It might help to practice some hatha yoga or other physical exercise in an effort to make the spinal cord 'more flexible'. Diet may also affect the process. The technique is also similar to the Tibetan 'Tummo' meditation. The rise of kundalini is sometimes experienced as a 'vibration' or buzzing, as light, or as heat.
Health And Diet
Certainly the way you treat your physical body will affect your mind. In magick you want an alert mind. Therefore, your body must be as healthy as you can keep it. Take care of your body. Exercise regularly. Eat a good diet (with vitamin supplements), and do not consume anything which will have a negative effect upon the mind. Drugs, smoking, and alcohol should be restricted, or eliminated. (The mind can create any condition which a drug can create.) A good rule here is moderation in what and how much you consume. (Most of this stuff is pretty obvious isn't it.) You may also want to cut down on sugar and processed foods. Many occultists advise dietary changes, especially the non-eating of meat. We cannot deny the physical, psychological, and spiritual effect which all foods have. This effect may be described as the 'heaviness' factor of foods. Various foods are so ranked in the chart, lighter to heavier...

1. lettuce and other greens.
2. fruits and most vegetables.
3. wheat, rice, and other grains.
4. nuts, beans, and other legumes.
5. cheese, dairy products, including eggs.
6. fish, seafood.
7. chicken, poultry.
8. beef, pork, other red meats.

Note that meats, especially red meats are the 'heaviest' foods. Generally, foods which are harder to digest, or which are higher in protein are 'heavier' than those which are not. Animal products are heavier than plants. Foods high in carbohydrate (candy, bread, starch) are heavy. However, the 'heaviness' of foods is not directly related to the amount of calories.

What this means is that for various reasons, the heaviness of food in your diet will affect your magical experiences. You may be able to increase your psychic receptivity ('energy level') by eating lighter foods, or by eating less. Conversely, emphasizing heavy foods in your diet, or eating larger helpings, may help to 'bring you down to earth' should you 'rent the veil' too much. These are generalizations, of course, and it may take a number of days of dietary change before you notice much effect. I do not advocate radical dietary changes, excessive fasting, or malnutrition. Your good health is far more important in magick than any temporary effect you get from prolonged starvation. A change in diet will sometimes only produce a temporary effect, until the physical body adapts to the change. Healthy natural foods and lifestyle make it easier for us to be healthy, but ultimately, good health is a mental quality (attitude).
The Four-Fold Breath
With physical exercise too, moderation is advised. (You should be cautious, or not attempt it if you have a respiratory or heart condition. Check with your physician if in doubt, and don't overdo.) One of the most useful physical exercises is pranayama, or controlled breathing (actually a type of hatha yoga exercise). For this and any other calisthenics or hatha yoga which you might choose to do a 'kitchen timer' is suggested (many of these aren't accurate for under three minutes, but are helpful for longer periods).

The main purpose of pranayama is to relax the body and mind. There are many kinds of pranayama, but a simple one called the 'four-fold breath' will suffice. This consists of four short quick inhalations, then four short quick exhalations; then repeat, continuing until the allotted time is used up. It will take about 1-1/2 seconds for the four inhalations, and about 1-1/2 seconds for the four exhalations; or about 3 seconds for the complete in-out cycle ('rep' for repetition). There should be no strain of any kind during your pranayama. You will probably notice a slight dizziness, particularly at first, since the effect of pranayama is to hyperventilate. Try sitting back in a chair with your eyes closed when you do your prana- yama. Begin a minute a day for the first week and gradually increase up to about five minutes a day. If you do the pranayama before your magical activity, it will help you to get 'into the mood'. It is also an excellent aid to relaxation and tension release. Pranayama should not be done during heavy air pollution. Other exercises you might consider are hatha yoga, calisthenics, walking or jogging.

What Is Magick

After being asked by several friends as to what magic, I've decided to try and define what it is. No please bear in mind that this is my own personal definition, and may or may not be shared by other witches.

Magic to me, is a way to make things happen. I realize that is a pretty sloppy definition, but let me try and explain it further. If you have ever looked at a tarot deck, you see pictures and you have some sort of rudimentary knowledge as to what each card means.
This is in a fashion how magic itself works. It is a way that the witch can bring into being entities which exist around us, on this plain and on other plans, by using the hidden energies around. I call it hidden energy because even witches do not know of all the energy that surrounds us. Magic is a method of getting a job done, not so much a tool, as it might sound. We really become to the tool for the magic. By using symbols, we bring into being these energies, and the energy manifests itself within us all. There are two poles, just like with positive and negative, male and female, like and unlike. This power that I speak of propels the universe and the world in which we live. Witches believe in two forms of energy. That which manifests itself in the male, and that which manifests itself in the female. Or the God and goddess principle, it is these two forces in which we operate. That is why you will hear of both male and female witches, as one cannot exists without the other.

Magic also manifests itself in many forms, many forms of "good" and many forms of "bad". I put the words good and bad within quotes as that is really in your own definition, I don't mean it necessarily for people worshiping the Wiccan gods and godesses as opposed to satan or set. Good magic is all up to your interpretation. Love spells by some can be called bad, and by some be called good. Magic doesn't always come from external, in fact often in never leaves your own body. Like in the middle pillar ritual where the witch seeks to walk the middle path, or more over, the balanced path. This is all done within, and is the first and foremost important on the wiccan path.

It is important to understand what magic is, in order to preform it with the desired results. For magic truely emerges from within, and not from without. Witches use the energy stream that flow around us on a daily bases, but any witch would be quick to admit that the true "power" starts within.

In short magic comes in two forms, internal and external magic. That is, you need the internal magic to work with the external magic. By external magic, I mean to tap into the other energy sources, as really magic is a form of energy. Spells, are devised to increase ones own magic, by bringing in external magic and other influences. As spells are a whole other form, they will not be covered here, nor do I want to be responsible for your own well being. If you wish to seek and discover magic or just are interested I suggest you seek out other witches that can "fill you in".

The Cycle Of The Horned God Initiation Ends

One of my Tarot clients was an interesting Goth girl from New England. I was telling her how much I missed like minded friends, and she told me about Tteadwells Bookshop. There I would be able to reconnect with the only people I felt I had anything in common with: Magical People and Artists.

It was late 2004, when I started going to talks there. There are so many interesting people speaking at Treadwells. The first talk I attended was with Caroline Wise. She was discussing the Deer Goddess Elen of the Ways. This Goddess, with her antlers and woodland aspect, was very resonant with me. Through the discussion, I gained many insights that brought me back in touch with myself. It was no accident that Elen of the Ways, or the woodland track, led me out of the darkness into which I had been plunged by the Horned God seven years before. Her’s was the feminine end of the cycle of Initiation I had undergone with the masculine Stag God, Cernunnos.

Elen means Light. In the case of this Woodland Goddess, it is the gentle light that filters through the trees. My time of endarkenment was over…one would think.

History Of Enochian Magick

Enochian Magick was first presented to the public in modern times by Sir John Dee, the court astrologer to Queen Elizabeth of England. Dee was born in England in 1527, and was a magician as well as an astrologer. Working with Edward Kelly (sometimes spelled Kelley), his psychic associate and partner, Dee "discovered" the system of Enochian Magick. According to Dee’s diary, the magical system was revealed to him by the Enochian Angels that inhabited the Watchtowers and Aethyrs of the subtle regions of the universe.

While Kelly conducted the psychic operations known as skrying, Dee kept meticulous records of everything that occurred. Kelly would look deeply into a crystal "shewstone" and describe aloud whatever he saw. Dee, in turn, carefully wrote everything down. The shewstone of Dee and Kelly is believed to have been a black crystal about the size of an egg. Although objects such as water and mirrors can often be used to skry successfully, the favored material is crystal. Dee is credited with having been one of the first magicians to use a large polished spherical crystal—a crystal ball.

The net result of Dee’s research was a series of tablets sectioned into squares with runes on each square. These runes were the letters of the Enochian alphabet. They spelled out the names of the deities who presided over the regions symbolized by the squares. The tablets were thus devised as maps of the invisible spheres that surround our physical world.

Little became of Dee’s work until late in the nineteenth century, when it was incorporated and adopted by a mysterious and highly secret brother-hood of adepts in England, who called themselves the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. They invoked the Enochian deities whose names were written on the tablets. They also traveled in what they called their Body of Light (a poetic term for the aura) into these subtle regions and recorded their psychic experiences in a scientific manner. One member, who left the Order to found his own, traveled through each of the thirty Aethyrs. His name was Aleister Crowley, and he carefully recorded his travels through the Aethyrs in a book called The Vision and the Voice. This book was written with highly symbolic imagery, and most people find it too difficult to understand or put to practical use.

The book, Enochian Magick: A Practical Manual (Schueler, Llewellyn Publications), was written in an effort to eliminate the unnecessary complexity of the Enochian magickal system and to combine its numerous elements into a single source. This book, published as a part of Llewellyn’s High Magick series, contains fundamental teachings of Enochian Magick such as the derivation of deity names, the rules associated with deriving signposts (known characteristics of the Watchtowers and Aethyrs of Enochian Magick), and step-by-step techniques for invocations. This book was followed by An Advanced Guide to Enochian Magick, which includes the main rituals and formulae of Enochian Magick. A third book, Enochian Physics, describes the structure of the Enochian magickal universe and compares that with the latest theories of modern physics. A fourth book, Enochian Tarot, was published in 1989.

Elemental Talismanic Magick

The following is a crude outline which can be used to create a talisman based upon the Enochian system of Elemental ТKeys.У It is very important to remember that the Enochian System, while highly flexible in itХs usage, is still perhaps THE most potent magical system in existence today. (I could be wrong, but heyЙ. Better safe than sorry, right?)

If you find this particular system appealing to you, feel free to use it as you will. If, however, you are a strict Enochian purist and dislike my simplified method of opening the spheres, feel free to modify this system to your own likingЙ. After all, magick is a subjective science and we, as magicians, can not afford to be too pre-disposed to our own little theories and practices.

I) Banishments.
A) The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram.
B) The Lesser Banishing of the Hexagram.
C) Any purifications or consecrations that suit your will.

II) The Raising of Pure Magical Energy. (Building Magical Momentum)

A) The Opening by Watchtower.
B) Any similar ritual as the Opening by Watchtower which is designed to raise a ТvortexУ of energy for the magicianХs usage of and working with.

III) The Opening of a Sphere.
A) Remember.

Always call the spirits to you in this particular fashion of working.

B) Use East for Air, South for Fire, West for Water, and North for Earth.
C) Use spirit pentagram active or passive and the names of ТAHIHУ or ТAGLAУ respectively. Also use the Enochian name of the Element being used.
D) Use the Invoking pentagram of the particular element with the God name ruling that element and the name of the Arch-Angel.
E) Use a preliminary invocation involving the Three Names of God upon the coresponding Banner and the name of the King set over the Element. This is very subjective and it is suggested that the Invocations given in Liber LXXXIX be used here.

IV) The appropriate key is given.
A) Use the appropriate key coresponding to the element that you are working with in order to fully conjure forth the desired elemental powers. If you will, you may use the English equivalent of the keys so as to save time and/or sanity.
B) Pause for a minute or two to feel the invoked force and, via visualization, circulate the invoked element throughout your body of light.
C) Declare that the spirits of the element have been duly invoked.

V) Consecration of the Talisman.
A) Move behind your altar and face the quadrant that you are working with. In the center of the altar should be your talisman/amulet and it should bear upon it all of the appropriate sigils, runes, etc.
B) Lifting the talisman from the altar, hold it so that the front (?) of it is facing the quadrant previously invoked. Hold it on high and visualize the energies previously drawn into your sphere as flowing through yourself and into the Talisman. Here you must now state the purpose of the Talisman 10 times.
C) Once your talisman ТfeelsУ charged, place it back upon the altar and, using your banishing dagger or your right index finger, trace above it a large, invoking earth pentagram while vibrating the God-name set over the element you are working with. Do this exactly 10 times.
D) Place the talisman in a bag and set it to the side of the altar that your coresponding elemental tool is near.

VI) Closings and further banishments.
A) Close the sphere by tracing the appropriate banishing elemental and spirit pentagrams with the previously used God- names.
B) Do the Closing by Watchtower or some other closing which will allow all stray or lingering energies to discipate.
C) Do the LBRH.
D) Do the LBRP.
E) Close the temple in your normal fashion.

Notes: The advantages of creating an elemental talisman as opposed to a planetary one are quite obvious:

1) You donХt have to worry about magical days and hours.
2) The system used can be adapted and changed for even higher and more enlightening works.
3) It is much more efficient and rapid (in my opinion) than having to go through the Golden DawnХs rigermorole of ТHaving passed the gate of the West thou, O creature, ТThou art now blahblahblah

The disadvantages to this system are:
1) The forces, being elemental in nature, are less focused when it comes to specific purposes. Thus, there is always an element of ТsurpriseУ when one makes an elemental talisman.
2) Enochiana must be studied thoroughly before one can use this system. Sure you can use the English equivalent keys but whereХs the fun in that?
3) Yes, depending on the lunar phase, you must either make it a talisman or an amulet. No doing this on the New or Full moons!

Further Notes: I have used this system and have recieved very positive results from my workings. Already the system is known to work (in my opinion at least) and the talismans created have benefited many of my friends and colleagues.

1- Make a list of things which have the combined qualities of dryness and coolness. However, don't to this just out of your head. Rather, make a list of Earth things that you see each day. Practice this for one week. Be sure to record the results each day in your magickal diary.

2- Find a place filled with nature, such as a field or park. Wear as little clothing as you can (if possible, nudity is best), and sit or lie on the ground so that as much of your skin as possible is touching the ground. This is especially easy for women, as they can simply wear a flowing skirt with no underwear and sit on the ground with the skirt spread out. Spend some time contemplating, feeling the coolness and dryness of the Earth. You should do this at least three times within a week.

3- Spend a period of up to three minutes (no more), once a day, imagining that you are the element Earth. Feel the heaviness, the slowness, the coolness and dryness of Earth. Feel the way you can absorb the pains and problems of the world (however, do not actually do so). Become Earth. Do this exercise for at least a week before moving to the next exercise.

4- Once you have leaned to "be Earth", the next step is to control the element Earth. Bring the feeling from the previous exercise into your consciousness. Next, hold your hands 9-12 inches apart, palms facing each other. Imagine a bottle or box between your hands. Now, as you exhale, visualize all of the Earth element which is in you going out with your breath and into the container between your hands. Three to five breaths should be enough to fill it. Then, with three breaths, inhale it back into you and go back to normal consciousness.

THE TEST
The next time you feel lightheaded, overweight, just heavy and lethargic, do this exercise. If you feel lighter and better, you have succeeded, with the test AND with mastering the element Earth.

The Empirical Rules Of Magick 02 Know Thyself

Karma is best described by the golden rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." The other major rule of magick is just as common place, "Know thyself." This is essential because of the Little Self. Magick is the science of expressing your will. Because there are many aspects to your will, it follows that you must be aware of all these aspects to be an effective magician.

"Know thyself" means be aware of the thoughts and feelings of your Little Self. Learn how it feels about the things you want. Learn it's beliefs. You must know your starting point to effectively change negative beliefs. To do this, you have to pay attention to all the subconscious cues that your Little Self gives you. Explore your feelings, keep track of your dreams, look at your past. One of the best clues is your own life. If you create everything on some level, then part of you "wants" each thing in your life. You must not deny this, but work with it. The goal is healing because destruction is at best temporary.

Different desires on other levels interfere with your conscious desire. Your Little Self picks them up everywhere. You must be aware of this so that you can counteract it. Every ideal commonly in the mass media impresses itself strongly. When Madison Avenue spreads the word that young and thin are the ideal, your Little Self will accept this if you are not careful. If you are not young and thin, this message undermines your sense of self worth. The resultant sense of undeserving works against your success. There is so much exposure to these messages that it is a real battle to avoid them. Particularly in childhood, when we can't protect ourselves, others deeply ingrain ideas that can be with us for life. You must work hard to discover these feelings and counter act them. If part of you feels undeserving, genuine success seems impossible.

There are other aspects to this problem. Not only might you feel undeserving, but you could even desire failure. There are many reasons for this, usually based in childhood. Whatever the cause, you must look at your failures to see if there might be some reward. Many people are subject to chronic illness, for instance, because of the attention they get or an unpleasant situation they avoid. If you really want to succeed, you must consciously release your desire for the rewards of failure.

You must also look at the fear of success. Many times we do not consider the problems associated with what we are striving for, but the Little Self does. It may be afraid of the responsibility of a better job or a new spouse. Think through your goals very carefully. What would life be like if you had what you desire? You will have to address any new tasks and responsibilities. You will have to be aware of any sacrifices. Once you are sure that you want not only your goal, but the sacrifices and responsibilities that go with it, then release your fears. People fear change, because it is unknown. You must be aware that you are taking a leap and welcome it. Have faith in your Self. When you know your Little Self well enough, you will be able to trust that it will bring you what you desire. When you don't know it that well, work on that. If you fail, it's time to work harder.

When you and your Little Self have the same goals, and you have healed all the blocks to your success, you *know* that what you want is coming. When you know, you do not feel desperate. If you are feeling desperation, you are blocking. In that case, back to work! When you have worked hard enough, then you are ready for the easy part, the spell or ritual. When you enter ritual you should know what you want and why you want it. You should have healed all feelings of failure and undeserving and you should know that your spell will bring it. Work to cultivate this feeling of calm expectation, it is an important key. When you do a ritual, you will release all the power you have built to do its work on the universe. You should not even have to think about it again.

Once you achieve this, though, there is another caveat. Many people have something unpleasant happen to them and later realized that they had asked for it. "Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it." Always think carefully about what you want and how you ask for it. Once again, solid background work is the key.

I
1. This is the Supreme Ritual of the Magician.

2. It is a Self-Initiation Rite designed to assist the Magician in his sacred endeavor to accomplish the Great Work of creating his own Destiny, of performing his own True Will.

3. Itis not a Work of Invocation in any general sense, but rather is it a Holy Rite of Dedication, a method and means to the higher realization, a ceremonial consecration of the Magician to the performance and accomplishment of his Great Work.

4. It is to be performed during any hour, as may befit the Will of the Magician, in accordance with the inspiration of the intuition of his own Holy Angel.

5. The Holy Temple, wherein to perform this Supreme Ritual, should contain a Magick Lamp, a Magick Sword, a reproduction of the Stele of Revealing, and a double-cubed Altar withWand, Cup, Dagger and Pentacle upon it. The Altar should also have upon it the Holy Oil of Abramelin, a Thurible, and the Magick Bell.

6. The Magician may be robed as he may deem fit, for this Supreme Ritual of Magick.He may, if he so will, wear a Magic Crown upon his head, with other embellishment of sacred significance adorning his dress.

7. Before performing this Supreme Ritual, the Magician should thoroughly banish in his Temple by the proper magical method, making utmost sure of its effectiveness by whatever means necessary to that essential end.Let him then apply the Holy Oil to his body, consecrating himself to the Great Work.He may then compose the Magick Circle of Protection.

II

The Magick Circle
1. Let the Magician arm himself with his Magick Sword, advance to the East of his Temple, and let him point it toward that particular direction with the fierce valor of a mighty warrior about to engage himself in battle, and let him say:

By the Might of this Sword of Power
I will accomplish my Will this hour!
To make around me a Magick Circle
To protect me in thisHoly Battle!

2. Let the Magician now draw in the air a Magick Circle with his Sword, moving in a clockwise manner.Let him return to the Centre of his Circle, and halt there.

3. Let the Magician, armed with his Sword, now say:
This is my Sword,
The Mightof the Lord!
It is the force of my soul,
The flaming Word of mine Angel
By which I protect myself from evil,
In the Centre of this Magick Circle
Which surrounds me in this Holy Temple
Where I stand, and all things tremble!

III
The Lesser Invocation

1. Let the Magician now give theSign of Horus, and say:
Hail to Thee, Thou God of Might,
Horus, Thou Son, Thou Lord of Light!
Hail to Thee, Whom I adore,
Thou Supreme and Hawk-Headed Lord!
Thou, Whom I do invoke this day,
To witness mine Oath, my chosen Way!

2. Let the Magician now retire in the Sign of Silence.

The Supreme Oath
1. Let the Magician, armed with his Sword of Might, in the center of his Circle,strike once upon the Bell as if to call the attention of the whole Universe.Let him then say:

This is my Oath, this is my Will,
By which I exercise my magick skill!
I swear before Thee, O Thou Mighty One,
To perform the Four Powers of the Sun:
Knowledge, Courage, Will, and Silence;
With force, skill, devotion and reverence!

To conquer in this Battle of Thy Holy Order,
To Go upon my Way with Thy sacred armor!
So that I may attain to the Glory of Thee,
O Thou blessed All, Inner Self of me!

2. Let the Magician now strike once more upon his bell. He is now prepared to consecrate his Magical Weapons to his Will, and mystically arm himself with them for the Holy War.

V

The Weapons of Art
I. Let the Magician first arm himself with his Magick Wand, saying:

This is my Will, this is my Wand,
By which I uplift my soul into The Beyond!

2. Let the Magician now arm himself with his Magick Cup, saying:

This is my soul, this is my Graal,
By which I understand mine Holy Angel!

3. Let the Magician now arm himself with his Magick Dagger, saying:

This is my intelligence, this is my Dagger,
By which I banish the illusions of danger!

4. Let the Magician now arm himself with his Magick Pentacle, saying:

This is my body, this is my Pentacle,
By which I achieve my Will Invincible!

5. Let the Magician now arm himself with his Magick Lamp, saying:

This is the Spirit of mine Angel Supreme,
Radiating Light, illimitable and keen!

VI

The Spell
1. Let the Magician, mystically equipped with all his Weapons, now pace counter-clockwise the Circle of his Temple, five times, giving the Sign of Horus on passing Boleskine 418, so as to project the Holy Force that radiateth therefrom.

2. Let the Magician now give the Sign of the Pentagram, with arms and legs outstretched, and head made erect.Then let him say:

O all ye elements
Of the Fallen Kingdom,
I stand above ye
In the Abode of Freedom!
Therefore I say
On this most holy day:
Hear me, and make all
Spirits subject unto me:
So that every Spirit of
The Firmament and of the Ether,
Upon the Earth, and under the Earth,
On Dry Land, and in the Water,
Of whirling Air, and of Rushing Fire,
And every Spell and Scourge of God,
The Vast One, may be obedient
Unto me!

3. Let the Magician now arm himself with his Magick Sword, invoke a Blazing Star in the East, South, West and North, and then let him return to the Centre of his Circle, and there let him say:

By the Force of the Pentagram,
The Star of Flaming Fire,
And armed with my Weapons
I go forth to inspire,
To cast this Spell, this Will
Of mine, my soul's aspiration
To the Divine!

4. Let the Magician now say:

The Greater Invocation
1. Let the Magician now light the Holy Incense, arm himself again with his Magick Sword, and invoke the Lord Horus, saying:

Crowned and Conquering,
To be Thou in me, and I in Thou!

O Thou Mighty and Vast One,
That art the Lord
Of the Aeon, The Son,
The Supreme and Terrible God

The Holy War
1. Let the Magician, still armed with his Magick Sword, go forth to battle in all four directions, that is, East, South, West, and North, by thrusting his Sword in each direction as if to battle off his enemies.

2. Let the Magician now return to the Centre of his Circle, still armed with his Magick Sword, and let him say:

By force, and with courage,
I will accomplishthis War
To rule the elements
With subtle vigor!

I will fight to the End
And truly ascend
To the Height of Freedom
In Holy Union!

I will be crowned with victory
In this Battle of Tribulation!
And attain the Great Work
Of a Warrior-Magician!

Magick 01 Why Magick

The ability to think seems to set us apart from other creatures. And although we are concerned with living in the physical world, we are mental beings. The fact is we are thinking all the time. We plan, we brood, we get depressed or elated -- all of it is thought. But the universe is mental too, and if we could control our thinking we would see magnificent results in the everyday world.

Many systems have been developed over the ages to help us control our thoughts. A great amount of dogma too has been kicked around in an attempt to make us into better people. Magick (the occult kind, spelled with a 'k') is one of the oldest and most general of these systems. Magick is the study and application of psychic forces. It uses mental training, concentration, and a system of symbols to program the mind. The purpose of magick is to alter the self and the environment according to the will.

Most of the magick we see today comes to us from ancient Egypt and Chaldea. The Chinese, Hindus, and Tibetans developed their own unique types of magick. Western magick was locked up by the Egyptian priests for thousands of years and then suppressed by the rise of Christianity. It was not until medieval Europe that magical knowledge was rediscovered by the alchemists and Cabalists. Only during the past hundred years or so has western culture been open minded enough to permit widespread investigation of the subject. Only since the start of the twentieth century has science shown much interest in it al all.

Parapsychology And Spychic Phenomena
Through parapsychology, we are gaining insights into the hidden nature of man. Parapsy-chology is a branch of psychology which studies psychic phenomena. It remains some-thing of a frontier, even today. Perhaps one reason for this is that psychic phenomena are somewhat inconsistent. Nevertheless, there is strong evidence from numerous cases and experiments in support of psychic phenomena. Somehow, under the right conditions, the mind can directly affect the environment.

We may theorize that the human mind and body broadcasts a kind of psychic energy or force, much like a radio station. Kirlian photography, temperature effects, cloud chamber tests, and other experiments tend to support this theory. Although the exact nature of this psychic force is subtle and unknown, it is undoubtedly the energy behind all psychic phenomena and magick. However, it is *not* a radio wave, since it behaves somewhat differently. The psychic force is too weak to be measured directly (at least so far as we know). Everyone has some psychic ability. There are numerous types of psychic pheno-mena. Parapsychology separates them into two groups: ESP and PK...
Examples Of ESP
ESP, the abbreviation for extra sensory perception, means the reception of information through paranormal means (i.e. not regular physical senses of sight, sound, touch, smell, or taste). In theory, this is accomplished by receiving psychic force from outside the body. Here are some examples of ESP:

1) Clairvoyance, or Remote Viewing--the ability to sense or 'see' (non-physically) distant objects, places, and people. Individuals who see ghosts and spirits are probably clairvoyant.

2) Clairaudience, or remote hearing -- the 'hearing' of paranormal information.

3) Astral Projection (OOBE) or Traveling Clairvoyance-Full experience at a remote location while the physical body sleeps.

4) Psychometry -- the reading of information by the touch of physical objects.

5) Telepathic receiver--the ability to directly receive thought (communication) at a distance, with no physical connection to the sender. There are many everyday examples of this, in which we think something just as another person is about to say it. This is an easy one to test for through experiment. Very dramatic cases of telepathy have been recorded; there is often an emotional element in such cases.

6) A 'channel' or medium, as in a seance, who is indirect communication with a 'spirit' or entity.

7) Experience with a Ouija board, pendulum, or automatic writing.

8) Precognition--to foresee the future. Again, highly emotional events are the ones most likely to be 'tuned in'.

9) Retrocognition-knowledge of the past, by paranormal means.
Examples Of PK
PK, the abbreviation for psychokinesis, is the active or sending side of psychic phenomena. The theory here is that psychic force is sent out from the individual. Examples of PK include:

1) Telepathic sender -the transmitter in the telepathy just discussed.

2) Psychokinesis (or telekinesis) proper-the ability to move objects by means of psychic force.

3) Somewhat along the same lines are poltergeist (noisy ghost) phenomena in which objects move of their own accord or noises are heard. There is always a human agent involved -- frequently a teenage girl -- who appears to be the source of psychic energy.

4) Psychic healing-the ability to heal various illnesses and infirmities. There are many documented cases of this. Usually it involves a healer and a subject, although there are recent cases involving cancer patients learning to heal themselves.

5) Teleportation, apportation, and levitation. Some occultists feel a magician producing PK effects is simply a channel for universal energy. Others think the force originates some way directly within the magician.
The Subconscious
Postulated by Freud and others, the concept of the subconscious mind is an important one. Basically, this is the idea that part of the mind normally operates below or outside of ordinary consciousness and awareness. Dreams and hypnosis are examples of this. Also subconscious are the many automatic functions of the physical body such as respiration and digestion.
Why Do Magick?
Magick encompasses many things-science and art, philosophy and metaphysics, psychology and comparative religion. Magick is an adventure at the borderlands of the unknown. It can fit the pieces of the puzzle of life into a meaningful whole.

*Magick is fun* and interesting. Use magick to help raise consciousness without drugs. Gain new experiences. Fantasy can come alive through magick. Psychic phenomena can be controlled and be fun and helpful.

*Magick is beneficial*. It can help you to have excellent health, and bring you good luck. With magick life runs smoothly; life is good. Also use magick for personality improvement, to control bad habits and to develop new motivations.

*Magick is powerful*. Never underestimate the tremendous power of magick. Use magick to alter events and to achieve your goals. Exert an influence over people and phenomena. But power for its own sake is self-defeating. The power which magick can give you should not be your primary reason for studying it.
Magick And Witchcraft
A number of other occult disciplines are prevalent today besides magick. There are many cults and sects which profess their own views, but there are really few differences between them. One popular area in the occult today is witchcraft. This is far removed from the clichй of devil worship. Real witchcraft is a nature religion (pagan). Witchcraft has much in common with magick.

Alchemy also has much in common with magick. Its heritage comes from the Middle Ages. Alchemy fathered chemistry and the physical sciences. But the avowed purpose of alchemy, turning lead into gold, is too limiting to be called magick. Sometimes the goal of alchemy is interpreted in another way, as the transformation of man into a spiritual being.

Then there are the numerous modern day seers or 'pychics', as they like to be called, who operate within their own somewhat unique systems. Although many of these people are deluded frauds, some are very powerful occultists indeed.

Of course, everything I have said here is a generalization. Magick, witchcraft, alchemy, or any occult fields are complex subjects. Suffice it to say that magick includes them all (it is eclectic). For magick is undoubtedly a philosophy which has, as the late Aleister Crowley wrote, "The method of science -- the aim of religion."

Thelemic Jihad

"Now this age is pre-eminently a 'time of war', most of all now, when it is our Work to overthrow the slave-gods."

At some point, all Thelemites know this, there will be a call from without and within the Thelemic current of divine destiny, and Thelemites will go to war. The enemy will be easy to locate, for he shall be anyone who is not a Thelemite; specifically he shall be anyone defending the faiths, powers, and practices of the Old Aeon.

If this war were declared today, it would not last long. Indeed, it likely would not amount to much of a war at all, as the vast majority of Thelemites are cute little hippies who wouldn't die for much of anything except more drugs and sprout-burgers. Their leaders, on the other hand, are pasty negheads, who couldn't command or plan an insurgency if their lives depended upon it, which they assuredly do not.

At most, the OTO might be able to stage a newage festival, and hope some SCA types would show up so at least an ornamental threat might be engaged against the tanks and planes and highly-trained killers of the combined militaries of the Old Aeon. Imagine Lon Milo DuQuette attempting to wipe out brigades of enemy warriors with his singing—well, OK, that MIGHT have the intended effect, but a chorus of lousy singers and magicians on the Thelemic side would not win a military battle, much less the war.

How then shall this war ever come about, and when shall it be declared, and even more importantly WON by the Thelemic side?

It’s only too easy to form a cult, To cry a crusade with “Deus Vult”— But you won’t get much of a good result from empty-headed Athenians.

Well, we get some idea about this by looking at Crowley's vision of that other religion which came close to being Thelema centuries before Thelema—and that is the martial faith of Islam. Of course we have listened to endless American meatheads tell us "Islam is a religion of Peace!" while trying to wipe enough blood and gore off the Koran to find those peaceful verses. But, the fundamental truth about Islam is that it was born, and spread, and flourished in greatness by the sword. An Islamic theological argument was the edge of a sword on the neck of an infidel. These days, the blade is used only ceremonially, to make horrific decap-vids for the Jihadist web. Generally, Muslim faithful prefer to blow motherfuckers the hell up (or down) using IEDs or suicide bombers.

Now, let me interject here that this sort of discussion is likely to make the Thelemic managers extremely uncomfortable, as it raises serious questions about their commitment to real versus carny Thelema; the real sort being that which engages in a serious manner Liber AL (LAL), and its many provocative verses; the carny brand being what OTO operates as an Old Aeon business. The latter necessarily kowtows to the laws and traditions of whatever state in which it resides, sets up the Abomination of Desolation and gladly worships it, and of course collects a living for the managers out of the blood of the ignorant members.

It is a comfortable, pestilent, pond of saturnine aspic (see Eight of Cups). But it is no training ground for Thelemic warriors, or Thelemites of any sort at all.

For anyone truly obeying "Do what thou wilt", but also truly acknowledging and accepting "I am a god of War and of Vengeance" AND "Kill and torture; spare not", understands that before Thelema can flower upon the Earth, it first must conquer and destroy the gardens of the enemy—and of course the gardeners and worshippers of those dying beds.

As we said, it is to Islam that we might apply ourselves to see what Crowley particularly valued about it, to such an extent that he even used the Islamic term "Caliphate" to describe the global goal of Thelema—world hegemony.

Many people may be surprised to learn that, at least in the view of Aleister Crowley, Mohammed was in the same holy order as himself, and was in fact, a founder of one of the "originating constituent assemblies" of the OTO.

More than this, Crowley speculated that Mohammed may have been a forerunner of the Equinox of Horus, i.e. a kind of bridge between the Aeon of Osiris and that of Horus. Mohammed was based in the cultures and the theology of the dying gods, while looking forward in style and vigor of faith to the Aeon of war and vengeance of Horus. Thus, Crowley suggested there were aspects of Islamic faith that Thelemites should admire and aspire to copy.

One virtue of Islam, or its believers, as Crowley noted, was their willingness to "fight and die for their ideas". Crowley constantly reminded Thelemites that a life lived in fear and compromise of one's liberty is no life at all. This is certainly not a new message of course, as most of us have heard the notion of "Liberty or Death"—which sounds great when you're young, male, drunk and not looking at much of a future anyway. To most people, that famous exhortation to fight for ideas is like a nostalgic bit of advertising, approximately the same in real force and depth of meaning as "Merry Christmas", or these secular days maybe "20% off all housewares". It's just something some crazy guy said a long time ago that doesn't mean much of anything to anybody.

For one thing, most of us know quite well that our choices are infinitely greater than liberty or death. If in fact that were not the case, maybe the binary would be more urgent in its appeal. But we can do many more things than be free, or completely free as we would have it, and many of those alternatives are infinitely more appealing to us than being dead. Now, of course the premise of the charge—to fight for the idea of Liberty—is that having the freedom, for example to decide what freedom even means, is a better thing than being a slave. That is the easiest way to understand it. Would you fight to the death to keep from being chained to—what exactly? A plow? A job? A set of expectations others have for you? A life that is as alien to you, though you live it every day, as a Martian meatloaf? The Devil?

And what does fighting to the death really mean? We can mostly agree I imagine that what we would prefer to do, if fighting is required, is to fight to the other fellow's death, not our own. Indeed, to have much chance to work on any future Work, we had better survive the battle to be available for it. Thus, either discretion or valor had better come to our aid, and some hard and effective training in combat wouldn't be bad either. Nobody is going to lease us a warrior's body, mind, or spirit, although we may be able to purchase mercenaries, which is to say people whose principal ideas are symbolized by little dead pieces of clinkage, to fight for us. This is what Americans have decided to do. And it has only enabled repression of liberty, because the citizens no longer demonstrate the ideals of the nation, such as those can even be agreed to, are worth fighting for.

Crowley, in that infamous exhortation to the violent defense of liberty, Liber OZ (Devil Book), said: "Man has the right to kill those who would thwart these rights." It is in fact the role and purpose of the Devil that calls us to liberty, and to the defense of liberty, because it is the force which pulls the Sun north (towards Life), and a Martian (individual) expression. Its counterpart, which pulls the Sun down to the darkness of Bliss, is called appropriately Death. Yet Death paradoxically yields Netzach-Victory, the apprehension of Beauty through individual valor and devotion. It is all about fighting for the Love of God, and for Love as God. And here Crowley placed Mohammed and his faith. On the opposite side he placed Buddha, and the heartless rationale of Indolence. In the synthetic position, in 6-Tiphareth, he placed himself, and Thelema, and one can see many borrowings from the antecedents. But chiefly from Islam, is its heart and passion to express and defend the faith with complete prejudice favoring the Will and Work of God.

Now, you may reasonably ask what I am saying here, respecting practical action on the part of Thelemites and their organizations. Am I saying that the only truly Thelemic life must be martial in nature, and aimed at, for the time being surreptitiously, preparation for Armageddon?

Yeah, that is what I am saying.

What I am not saying is exactly when this battle shall be fought. It might happen only in the aftermath of a cataclysmic exchange of military destructive force between the OA powers. But if that happens, if that is the opening that allows the Thelemic rats to conquer the OA dinosaurs, it may be centuries before civilization can right itself into anything Thelemites, or anybody else, would wish to rule.

This may be inevitable. Human beings, faced with utter annihilation if they refuse to deny their gods and their most cherished beliefs, often choose death for everyone and everything. So it may be for the OA ministers and armies. So it may be for many or most Thelemites too.

Of course, there is another way—there usually is. And that would involve an appropriation of the OA means of command, an infiltration of its command structures, and an indoctrination of key command figures allowing for the subversion and overthrow of the various OA regimes. This is essentially the Christian method, used successfully to overthrow the pagans of the Roman Empire. That could take a very long time, and certainly would put Thelema into the position of being labeled by the old regimes as a "terrorist" movement. No doubt many Thelemites would be thrown to the lions before emperors would start declaring Thelema to be the state religion.

Finally, and I will talk more about this soon, but there is always the possibility that Crowley's writings about war and about the martial nature of Thelema were just literary exercises, or attempts to satirize religious extremism. That seems unlikely to me, since to take seriously that notion, one has to think Crowley the most devoted satirist in the history of the world. Of course, a satire taken to a globally transformative level of seriousness might have been the cosmic joke Crowley (or Aiwass) intended all along.
