Thelema Abramelin Lunar Ordeal Has Begun

Thelema Abramelin Lunar Ordeal Has Begun Image
I have started the Abramelin Lunar Ordeal and will post articles at strategic points in the process to share with you how this ordeal is shaping up. One can spout platitudes and make theories about magick, but the real proof is in the performance of actual ordeals and experiments.

Since I have proposed an alternative path to the traditional Abramelin ordeal, joining it with the invocation of the Bornless One, it is important for me to actually test my hypothesis and to note the results for others to examine and ponder. What I have learned through my many years of practical experience is that one's intention has a powerful shaping influence on what one experiences in the practice of ritual magick. What this means is that even a highly flawed ritual performed by a mere novice can be as effective as that performed by an experienced magician if that novice has the right amount of passion, zeal and an empowered and indomitable intention.

However, the difference between a novice and an experienced magician is that the experienced magician can repeat the phenomena produced and even share the rituals and ceremonies that he or she used with others for their examination and experimentation. A novice is effective often as a matter of luck or the right combination of effects, and generally not because of their experience and knowledge. This means that a novice may produce effective results or not, but only somewhat slightly better than chance.

On November 16, at exactly 1:14 pm CST, I began the Abramelin Lunar ordeal with an extensive meditation session and later followed up that evening with a Mass of the Goddess. What I experienced was a potent affirmation that the path and action that I have chosen is the right one for me at this time. I sensed that I had engaged with a powerful spiritual presence, undoubtedly that it was my personal aspect of the Goddess blanketing me with good will, anticipation and joy at the beginning of what will prove to be a very challenging seven weeks of constant meditation, contemplation and invocative ritual magick. So my personal aspect of the Deity is in a positive accord with what I am spiritually and magickally planning to do. That's a good sign, but there have been other signs that I have experienced that would also indicate that fate is positively disposed towards me.

The previous weekend (Nov. 7), I invoked the archangel Ratziel (God's Mystery) using the new methodology that I had assembled recently. Ratziel is a spirit that I have invoked a number of times previously, since I have determined that he is the core of what I have discovered over the years as a very different Enochian system of magick, incorporating the Nephilim as contra-archangelic entities as well as other variations. I intend to write extensively on this different approach to Enochian magick in the future, but for now, let's just say that I am quite familiar with Ratziel.

Anyway, this entity, when invoked, had a profound effect on me and imparted some very fascinating information. The effect was one of acknowledgment, which empowered my intention and gave me a profound resolution that my desire to perform the upcoming ordeal is the correct thing to do. I had to recreate the sigil for Ratziel, having misplaced the one that I made for previous invocations, and the archangel told me that the new sigil was my passport and key for invoking the more potent and mysterious Seraphim and Cherubim, who I intend to invoke in the next four weekends. By the middle of December, I will have invoked all eight of these majestic spirits, and my intention for doing so has been strengthened by the favor and good will of Ratziel. I still need to carefully build up my intention before attempting these invocations, but now I feel more resolved and compelled to do so, and less cautious and worried about the outcome. Invoking these super-archangels is no small matter and approaching them with frivolous requests or unethical desires would be most disastrous for any magician.

Ratziel also imparted to me that he had a hand in influencing and inspiring me to formulate this ordeal, even though the credit for doing so is still completely my own. So what this means is that a bit of angelic providence has inspired and guided me to formulate this working. I must admit that I am greatly intrigued, and it would seem that the spiritual hierarchy is in agreement with what I am about to do. That being said, I must still be disciplined and diligent in all of my efforts in order for this ordeal to be successfully concluded. I will refrain from eating red meat, will eat sparingly and adopt a vegetarian diet for the weekend workings. I am also meditating twice daily - once at waking, and again before bed. The weekends will require some vigils and a steadfast focusing on just the magick at hand, to avoid any distractions. I must, therefore, complete all of my work before the end of the week so as to make myself ready for the major workings on the weekend.

So all is in readiness for the first set of invocations this weekend, when I will invoke the Seraphim and Cherubim of Earth, whose names are Zahariel and Yofiel, respectively. I will write up a report summarizing those encounters, and we shall see how all that plays out. Right now, I feel very confident about the outcome, since all the signs point to a powerful affirmation of the rightness of this working and its successful outcome.

ALEISTER CROWLEY : SATANIST
by 'Thelemite'

HYMN TO LUCIFER

Ware, nor of good nor ill, what aim hath act?
Without its climax, death, what saviour hath
Life? an impeccable machine, exact
He paces an inane and pointless path
To glut brute appetites, his sole content
How tedious were he fit to comprehend
Himself! More, this our noble element
Of fire in nature, love in spirit, unkenned
Life hath no spring, no axle, and no end.

His body a blood-ruby radiant
With noble passion, sun-souled Lucifer
Swept through the dawn colossal, swift aslant
On Eden's imbecile perimeter.
He blessed nonentity with every curse
And spiced with sorrow the dull soul of sense,
Breathed life into the sterile universe,
With Love and Knowledge drove out innocence
The Key of Joy is disobedience.

According to Israel Regardie,

"anyone who says Crowley was a Satanist and a
devil-worshipper should have his head examined."

Crowley's own references to Satan are stated by Regardie as
being due to his desire to shock, be defiant, sarcastic or witty.
(Regardie, The Eye in the Triangle).

Let us therefore consider the writings of Crowley himself to see
whether the 'Satanism' of this remarkable personality can be so readily dismissed.

Crowley's literary executor and biographer, John Symonds, writes:

"Crowley's philosophy takes a bit from here and a bit
from there... but... he was more a Satanist than
anything else. 'I serve my great Master Satan', he
wrote in one of his franker confessions, 'and that
august Council composed of Beelzebub, Lucifuge,
Asmodeus, Belphegor, Baal, Adrammelech, Lilith and
Nahema.'"
(John Symonds, The Great Beast).

RESTORING DEVIL WORSHIP
In his major work Magick in Theory & Practice, Crowley describes
the manner in which Satan fits into his intricate cosmology: the Aeon of Horus, which he believed he was destined and chosen to proclaim to mankind, includes the formula FIAOF of which the 'O' component is

"The exalted 'Devil' (also the other secret Eye {phallic
worship}
) by the formula of the initiates of Horus...
This 'Devil' is called Satan or Shaitan, and regarded
with horror by people who are ignorant of his formula...

"... We have therefore no scruple in restoring the
'devil worship' of such ideas...

"Thus the 'Devil' is Capricornus, the Goat who leaps upon
the loftiest mountains, the Godhead which, became manifest
in man, makes him Aegipan, the All."

DEFINING THE DEVIL
Crowley's conception of the 'Devil' is not too far removed from
that of contemporary Satanists. Crowley states that "The Devil does not exist", but then goes on to explain that "The 'Devil' is, historically, the God of any people that one personally dislikes. This has led to so much confusion of though that the Beast 666 [Crowley] has preferred to let names stand as they are, and to proclaim simply that Aiwaz -
solar-phallic-hermetic - 'Lucifer' - is his own Holy Guardian Angel
{Higher Self} and 'the Devil' Satan or Hadit of our particular unit of the Starry Universe. This Serpent, Satan is not the enemy of man, but he who made gods of our race, knowing Good and Evil..."

In his ritual for the Attainment of Knowledge and Conversation
of his Holy Guardian Angel, Crowley identifies himself as the servant of Satan, "the Devil, out Lord..."... "whose number of magick is 666, the seal of his servant the Beast"
(Crowley).

The occult author Kenneth Grant, a former student of Crowley's
and head of an English OTO lodge, comments that "this whole ritual is an invocation of Shaitan (Satan) or Set", Crowley's aim being union
"with his Angel, Shaitan-Aiwaz."

Satan is, in Crowley's cosmology, "the Sun-Father, the vibration
of Life that Flames with this cosmic Energy
", the solar-Phallic Current.

In a ritual "to invoke the Energies of the Aeon of Horus, the
ritual of the Mark of the Beast
", the powers of ShT are called forth, ShT being Set/Satan/Shaitan, on which, writes Grant, "are concentrated the magical energies of the New Aeon."

CULT OF SHAITAN
Grant, in contradiction to Regardie, writes that Crowley's
Thelemic philosophy (a synthesis of Nietzscheanism, Eastern and Western mysticism, gnosticism and mythology expressed in his own powerful
poetical style
) is Satanic or Shaitanic.

Grant writes that Shaitan was the Chaldean form of the Egyptian Set.

"The cult of Shaitan was established in Sumer by the prophet
Yezid... Crowley... revived the cult of Shaitan or Set.
"
(Grant, Outside The Circles of Time).

It was Shaitan whom Crowley equated with Aiwaz, his own
unconscious (Holy Guardian Angel); it was Baphomet, the idol of the Templars which Crowley adopted as one of his titles, which he equates with the 'Devil' (Crowley, 777 & Other Qabalistic Writings) and who but an inspired Satanist could write these powerful lines (?):

"With my Hawk's head I peck at the eyes of Jesus as he
hangs upon the cross.

"I flap my wings in the face of Mohammed and blind him.

"With my claws I tear out the flesh of the Indian and
the Buddhist, Mongol and Din.

"Bahlasti! Ompehda! I spit on your crapulous creeds.

"Let Mary inviolate be torn upon wheels: for her sake
let all chaste women be utterly despised among you!
"

(Liber AL).

Magick Thelema

Magick Thelema Image
"The first version of this article was published on 6/19/2006 on the previous version of this blog. "

A hundred years ago most men belonged to fraternal orders of one sort or another, many of which had initiatory rites largely copied from those of Freemasonry. These days many books on magick and witchcraft support the concept of "self-initiation" and the popularity of secret and semi-secret fraternal orders has waned. Does that mean that formal initiation has become a quaint anachronism, or is it still an effective spiritual technology?

What the concept of self-initiation gets right is that regardless of the rituals and ceremonies you go through and the degree titles you hold, you have to do the corresponding spiritual work yourself. There is no real way around this basic truth. Spiritual realization is experiential - it cannot be taught or even directly explained. Because of this a degree title does not guarantee spiritual wisdom or power. In many organizations, advancement to higher degrees is contingent upon service to the organization rather than actual spiritual attainment, and the fact that someone is a hard worker in the mundane realm says nothing about their capacity for magick or mysticism, or the quality of their realization.

Nonetheless, formal initiation is a powerful method for imprinting the mind with concepts and ideas that will facilitate the spiritual evolution of a dedicated spiritual practitioner who takes those lessons to heart. The secrecy that surrounds initiatory traditions is related to a powerful psychological techique - the mind becomes more sensitive and attuned to information when it is placed in a situation of uncertainty, so an initiatory ritual will create a much more powerful imprint if the candidate does not know what is going to happen. Enough has been published that it is possible with some diligence to locate the degree work of most initiatory orders, but if you ever plan on taking the degrees all you are doing is cheating yourself.

I am convinced that this is the sole practical reason for secrecy surrounding initiation rituals. For much of human history it was believed that secret knowledge was somehow more powerful, but I suspect this belief was due to a misunderstanding of the mechanics of mind. When a candidate knows what is going to happen it is not that current of magical energy is weaker but that the mind expects the form of the ritual and is less moved by it. As a result, the magical effect of the initiation is reduced and a reasonable person might conclude that the power of the rite somehow grows if few know its details. What really happened is that the mind anticipated the actions of the rite, conceptualized them, and processed them ahead of time so no effective imprint was formed.

So does this imprint hypothesis mean that initiations are merely psychological? In a sense the answer is yes, but there is no "merely" about it. All magical rituals raise energy if performed by skilled practitioners. The difference with an initiation is that the psychological imprint allows the psyche of the candidate to be more open to that energy than they might otherwise be, and gives that energy a framework in which to work toward creating change in the candidate's life.

One of the wonders that the Internet has brought us is the concept of "astral initiations" that is, a group of magical practitioners will ask candidates to send them photographs or some other sort of magical link and then perform the initiation rite on the magical link, presumably to transmit a current of energy to the candidate corresponding to the energy summoned by the initiation rite. While the people doing this work may be sincere, I have trouble believing that it is all that effective. Without the imprint, the initiation will not work nearly as well. A magical force may be set in motion, but the effect will be reduced if it has to travel over a magical link and there will be no imprint created since the candidate has not gone through the physical experience of the initiation.

A couple of people have reported to me that they took astral initiations and felt some sort of tangible energy effect, and I believe them - I just think that the effect is unlikely to be any greater than that of performing a self-initiation rite and perhaps that would have been a better route to take. For one thing, it's free. Second of all, I think that any magician will learn a lot more writing and conducting his or her own initiation ritual than he or she will possibly pick up going through any sort of "astral ritual" conducted by others, regardless of how talented those others might be. Better still, though, would be to find a friend who is also a talented magician who can write a ritual that will be completely unfamiliar to the candidate so that an imprint will be properly formed.

Because this can be a difficult situation to set up, existing fraternal bodies still have an important role in initiation. In general, the rituals they perform were originally developed by talented ritualists and improved over the years based on changes that were found to work better for initiating candidates. Such improvements are based on empirical observation that a single individual could never undertake on short notice, and as a result the rituals themselves are cleaner and generally work better. While groups like Ordo Templi Orientis are more explicitly magical, the Masonic fraternity also puts on good initiation rites that have been tested for centuries on millions of candidates, a very impressive track record. Also, Masonic initiations are not only available to men - American Co-Masonry (http://www.co-masonry.org/) offers initiation to both men and women and has lodges in many areas of the country.

If Masonry is any indication, today more and more people are becoming interested in initiation and fraternal orders and seeing the value in joining such organizations. After losing members for a long time, it seems like Masonic lodges are finally starting to find more qualified individuals seeking initiation. The Internet helps make these groups easier to find, and it is clear that this is where many of the inquiries are now originating. My Masonic lodge has a very nice website at http://braden.org/ that has a lot of information, and I am also an initiate of Ordo Templi Orientis (http://oto-usa.org/) and a member of the local OTO lodge (http://www.leapinglaughter.org/) here in Minneapolis. Religion Belief Significance Of The Magickal Name

Religion Belief Significance Of The Magickal Name Image
When one begins to undertake the spiritual journey of discovery that is the study of Magick, it is an accepted practice to choose a new name or Magickal Motto. The reason for this is primarily a symbolic one.

Just as we have no choice of birth parents, we have no say in the matter of the name chosen for us when we are born. More often than not, spiritual considerations do not factor into our parent's selection. Name are chosen for children based on lineage, perhaps, or a child might be named after a famous individual.

A Magickal Name or Motto is something we choose according to our own freewill. As such, it can be chosen in such a way that it reflects our own spiritual desires and ambitions. It can be carefully considered and serve as a reminder of who we truly are or wish to become.

Those who choose to use a Motto will find it especially beneficial to select a word or phrase in an older language such as Latin. The reason for this is that using a language other than our normal one places emphasis on the word or phrase. It makes it stand out, especially in times of ritual. This is why so very many Magickal rites found in the ancient grimoires are filled with what have come to be known as "barbarous words". In this case, "barbarous "can be taken to mean strange or unfamiliar.

When you go about the process of selecting your own Magickal Name or Motto, give some thought to your choice. Many people believe the Magickal Name, once chosen, can never be altered. I tend to disagree. I believe that our spiritual development is very much a process of evolution. We grow and change. It is perfectly reasonable to accept that the Magickal Name or Motto we chose when we began might not be a reflection of who we are today.

As with all things Magickal, it is wise for you to keep your Magickal name or Motto a secret. Many practitioners believe that to reveal it to another is to grant that person a certain amount of power. In this, I agree. You should keep silent.

Williamson Hopes To Create A Similar Alchemy

Williamson Hopes To Create A Similar Alchemy Image
BY ALEX STRACHAN, POSTMEDIA NEWS

The creator of "The Vampire Diaries", Kevin Williamson, has come full circle with "The Secret Circle".

"The Vampire Diaries", about to raise the curtain on its third season, is filmed in a small town outside Atlanta, but the pilot episode was filmed in the Vancouver area, in the spring of 2009.

Fast-forward two and a half years, and the new companion series, "The Secret Circle", which bows Thursday on The CW (Friday on MuchMusic), has put down stakes once again in Vancouver, this time to stay.

Williamson, along with co-writers Andrew Miller and Gina Girolamo, adapted" The Secret Circle" from the series of young adult novels by "Vampire Diaries" author L.J. Smith. The story stars "Life Unexpected"'s Brittany Robertson as a recently orphaned teen sent to stay with her grandmother in a small town in the Pacific Northwest. While there, she learns she has long-buried unearthly powers, and the town is not entirely as it seems. "The Secret Circle" is more Wiccan than Vampirian in tone, but that didn't stop Williamson from seeing Vancouver as a natural fit for his new series.

The "Lower Mainland look" has an eerie quality all its own, especially in the rain, Williamson allows.

"The woods are familiar from a lot of shows up there," Williamson said from Los Angeles. "A lot of big vampire movies," he added, deadpan.

True, the region has experienced an uncharacteristically dry spell in recent weeks, but B.C.'s late summer won't last. "The Secret Circle" is in it for the long haul.

The pilot episode, filmed earlier this year, was anchored in and around the Steveston area, in Richmond. Williamson says he was drawn to Steveston because of its historic feel, and because the boardwalk has an authenticity that could never be recreated on a sound stage -- least of all in Burbank, California.

Williamson's adaptation of "The Vampire Diaries "survived early (and inevitable) comparisons to" True Blood" and the "Twilight" films to stake a claim as something similar, yet different, with a voice uniquely its own. In its two seasons so far, "The Vampire Diaries" has struck a chord with younger viewers looking for something with more long-term resonance and meaning than a series of feature films. "The Vampire Diaries" has told 44 hours of story so far, Williamson notes, with at least another 20 or 40 hours yet to come.

Williamson hopes to create a similar alchemy with "The Secret Circle". He wants to tap the Lower Mainland's acting community of young performers, in part because he has always favoured relative unknowns over established stars. Williamson was instrumental in nurturing the careers of Joshua Jackson, Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams and James Van Der Beek, when they were relative unknowns in "Dawson's Creek", Williamson's breakout series for The WB in the late 1990s.

Williamson was "blown away, absolutely and simply blown away" by relative unknown and "Degrassi" alum Nina Dobrev, when the Toronto teen auditioned for the lead role in "The Vampire Diaries". The role was proving near impossible to cast; by his own estimation, Williamson says he saw "thousands of auditions," none of which felt exactly right. Williamson fought hard to get Dobrev the role, despite initial misgivings by the network and studio, which wanted a more familiar and experienced actor in the part. As luck -- and savvy casting -- would have it, almost everything associated with "The Vampire Diaries" has turned to gold.

Williamson feels a similar vibe is happening with "The Secret Circle", even though it has yet to air. Even if "The Secret Circle" were to conjure a similar fate as "The Vampire Diaries", though, that doesn't mean it will be easy.

Thelema Food For Thought Perhaps

Thelema Food For Thought Perhaps Image
This image has always fascinated me. It is of course the enititiy 'Lam' which wicked man extraordinaire Aleister Crowley claimed to have summoned in the early twentieth century. He had apparently contacted this entity through a series of magical rites entitled the Almantrah Working. One of the reasons that this image has fascinated me is the uncanny resemblance it bears to another fairly striking drawing of another Entity that was encountered by a man some 60 odd years after LAM.

This is the face of the female entity that Sci-fi writer/Alien Abductee Whitley Strieber claimed to have encountered in his best selling Communion. As has been pointed out by others long before me, you can't help but see a resemblance. Very strange indeed. But I guess thats the world of the Fortean for you. I will leave you with these photos to look over for now.

Book: Al The Comment Called D The Djeridensis Working by Aleister Crowley

The Comment called D by 666 (Aleister Crowley), c. 1923. Crowley himself never published it, but it did appear in "The Magical Link" IX(4)–X(2), 1995/96. Please note that this copy derives from a secondary source, with key entry and editing by Frs. T.S. and V.C. The PDF version can be found here. I myself have added the text from Liber AL for reference. Internal footnotes are by Leah Hirsig, who typed the document from Crowley's written notes. Here is a site providing scans of Leah's original typescript.

The word "Djeridensis" essentially means "pertaining to Djerid", since -ensis means "pertaining to" (usually a place) and Djerid (lit. "palm")-located in Nefta, Tunisia (on the shore of Chott de Djerid)-was the name of the hotel in which the document was written. Nefta is considered to be the spiritual home of Sufism, and is the religious center of the "Bled el Djerid" ("Land of Palms"), with more than 24 mosques.

Philio

Philio Cover To the Greeks, Philio is brotherly love and represents the affection that one feels toward one’s comrades when a common bond is shared. It is a love that is manifested when we are united and/or supporting one another as we are Working toward achieving a common goal. We are under its Influence when we are being affectionate, welcoming or kindly to our mates. The city of Philadelphia in the United States gets its name from Philio. It is called “the city of brotherly love.” Ironically, in psychiatry, Philio is synonymous with phobia. It represents an obsession with a particular thing or subject.

Book 4 Part I Meditation Cover

Book: Book 4 Part I Meditation by Aleister Crowley

Part I is titled "Mysticism" with the sub-title "Meditation: The way of attainment of genius or Godhead considered as a development of the human brain." The section is essentially Crowley's system of yoga, which is designed to still the mind and enable single-pointed concentration. When developing his basic yogic program, Crowley borrowed heavily from many other yogis, such as Patanjali and Yajnavalkya, keeping their fundamental techniques while jettisoning much of the attendant moral dogma.

Yoga, as Crowley interprets it in this section, involves several key components. The first is Asana, which is the assumption (after eventual success) of any easy, steady and comfortable posture. Next is Pranayama, which is the control of breath, and Mantra yoga, which is the use of mantras. Yama and Niyama are the adopted moral or behavioral codes (of the adept's choosing) that will be least likely to excite the mind. Pratyahara is the stilling of the thoughts so that the mind becomes quiet. Dharana is the beginning of concentration, usually on a single shape, like a triangle, which eventually leads to Dhyana, the loss of distinction between object and subject, which can be described as the annihilation of the ego (or sense of a separate self). The final stage is Samadhi-Union with the All.

Ouija Boards

Ouija Boards Cover
The Ouija Board has been around for many years. Normally sold as a children's game, it is made by Parker Brothers and sold in almost every toy store across America. Although it is sold as a game it is best to used by someone who at least knows how to do some type of protection ritual first before attempting to use the Ouija Board. The reason for this is because you don't want some bad to possibly enter your body or to keep hanging around you after you are done. A simple Ritual to strengthen the Aura will be sufficient..... but you may want to do a banishing ritual afterwards to make sure that the spirit goes away. The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram would be good for that. Once you have your board all you need then is some candles and maybe some incense and a quiet place to work. Dont for forget.... there are several types of Boards used for communicating with the Spirit World besides the Ouija. Some call them Witch Boards or Angel Boards. At the end of this page I have several you can choose from.
Now keeping in mind what I have just stated.... let's get started.....

First you want to go to your quiet place, someplace in your house where you will not be disturbed. Turn off the lights and light the candles and incense. If you have 2 people it always seems to work better for some reason. Do your protection ritual whatever you choose as your own style of protection. If you do not know one then you can simply imagine your body surrounded by a sphere of bright white light. The color white is always used for protection and purity. Then when you are relaxed enough, each person place their fingertips on the edge of the disc. Be sure not to push down very hard at all or the disc will not slide around like it is supposed to. You may then ask if there is anyone present with you here in the room. Or are there any spirits here that wish to communicate at this time? You may want to ask this several times. It may take a little while before it will start to move. When it starts to move slowly towards the yes then you know you have made contact with some form of entity. It usually takes a few minutes or so to start getting any results if you do. Don't expect to get results every time, for you are not commanding these spirits, you are simply asking them if they want to talk. Once you have made contact, then ask the spirit what its name is. Then you may proceed to ask the spirit any questions you want. Things will usually start to speed up a little from that point on. Sometimes when a spirit is ready to leave, the disc will just go off the board. Write down your experiences every time you use the Ouija Board and keep them all in a little journal for future reference. Now the the most important part... Make sure you do some form of banishing ritual in order to make sure that the spirit has departed and is not still hanging around. The choice is yours and you don't have to do this banishing, but it is always better if you can. If the spirit stays and hangs around you it may very well try to influence you to its way of thinking and it may not be a good spirit. So just take precautions and your experiences should be quite enjoyable!

The Sphinx

The Sphinx Image
The Sphinx is closely related to the Greek legend of OEdipus. To each who passed her lair the Sphinx addressed the question, "What animal is it that in the morning goes on four feet, at noon on two feet, and in the evening on three feet?" Those who failed to answer her riddle she destroyed. OEdipus declared the answer to be man himself, who in childhood crawled upon his hands and knees, in manhood stood erect, and in old age shuffled along supporting himself by a staff. There is still another answer to the riddle of the sphinx, an answer best revealed by a consideration of the Pythagorean values of numbers. The 4, the 2, and the 3 produce the sum of 9, which is the natural number of man and also of the lower worlds. The 4 represents the ignorant man, the 2 the intellectual man, and the 3 the spiritual man. Infant humanity walks on four legs, evolving humanity on two legs, and to the power of his own mind the redeemed and illumined magus adds the staff of wisdom. The sphinx is therefore the mystery of Nature, the embodiment of the secret doctrine, and all who cannot solve her riddle perish. To pass the sphinx is to attain personal immortality.

Single Eye Movement The Nature Of Consciousness An Interview With Francis X Charet

Single Eye Movement The Nature Of Consciousness An Interview With Francis X Charet Image
Francis X. Charet, PhD, Psychology of Religion, is the Coordinator of the consciousness studies department at Goddard College. He was instrumental in the design and development of the Consciousness Studies Concentration. His background is in the history of religions and Jungian psychology with interests in philosophy, social science, and neuroscience.

I don't share some of his views - but he is interesting to read.

This interview comes from Single Eye Movement, a very cool site. If you have never been there, check it out.

THE NATURE OF CONSCIOUSNESS: AN INTERVIEW WITH FRANCIS X. CHARET

BY BENTON ROOKS

"DO YOU BELIEVE THERE IS A WAY OF APPREHENDING TRANS-HUMAN LAWS AND ABSOLUTE TRUTH OUTSIDE OF THE CONDITIONS OF TIME AND MIND? THAT THE SOUL MAY KNOW THE TRUTH ALONE WHEN IT HAS BECOME ISOLATED FROM THE DEFAULT BODY-MIND ORIENTATION?"

This is a very complex question and involves the need to make clear what is meant by time, mind, and soul. On one level, these terms are ways of conceptualizing certain modes of perception and experience and are also subject to the conditions of particular historical contexts. In fact, these terms and what they represent of themselves have a history that reflects shifts and changes as well as a degree of continuity. The body/mind conception, Cartesian dualism etc. are influential ways that various persons in the West have attempted to understand the phenomenal world, sensation, and the correlation or not between the latter and the seemingly independent existence of consciousness. This dualism has, in the course of time, either collapsed into being reduced to "body" or "mind". There are Eastern parallels for this as well.

My own view is that there is a fundamental unity underlying "body" and "mind" and yet a distinction has emerged seemingly to initiate a dialectical process for the purpose of the differentiation of consciousness. Some have resisted this distinction in favor of one side or the other; there are others who have seen and experienced the unity behind it all and these are the visionaries. But to attain this level of consciousness, and not experience it as the consequence of regression into unconsciousness, is exceptional, transpersonal, and probably the work of several centuries on the collective level.

"WHAT ARE THE WAYS WE CAN MAKE THE METAPHYSICAL TRUTHS OF THE WISDOM TRADITIONS MORE ACCESSIBLE TO THE PUBLIC AT LARGE? IS THERE ANY HOPE FOR THE PERENNIAL PHILOSOPHY TO BECOME MORE MAINSTREAM, AND TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN VARIOUS RELIGIONS, IDEOLOGIES, AND PHILOSOPHIES? COULD VISIONARY ART PERHAPS CONTRIBUTE TO THE EFFORT OF VALIDATING THESE UNIVERSAL EXPERIENCES? "

Well, I think many of the great wisdom traditions are becoming known but often the downside of allegedly making them more accessible has resulted in diluting, distorting and commodifying them, especially in America. Yoga is only one of the obvious examples. Most are unwilling to make the necessary sacrifices to follow a spiritual path and there are few true teachers in spite of the claims otherwise. Sadly, the so-called "spiritual supermarket" of this culture is proof, once again, that all too often the real religion of America is business and money!

If by perennial philosophy you mean the Traditionalist School, I think it will likely never become mainstream but also of limited influence because of its position on evolution and its largely anti-modern stance. While the best Traditionalists have managed to maintain a degree of integrity for their anti-modern vision by harnessing vast learning and some of the best scholarship in the service of their metaphysics, they can also come across as too dogmatic, judgmental, and even entrenched in their opinions of various other perspectives. In my view, the above two points are what prevents what is otherwise a fascinating and compelling combination of scholarship and spiritual vision from being accessible to most in the modern world. Nevertheless, the Traditionalist School is becoming more present in recent times by reprinting many of the works of the older scholars and publishing more recent ones.

Yes, I agree that visionary art, if taken in a broad sense, could be of considerable value in conveying universal spiritual themes.

"WHEN DID YOU FIRST ENCOUNTER SUCH THINKERS KNOWN AS THE TRADITIONALIST SCHOOL SUCH AS RENE GUENON, ANANDA COOMARASWAMY AND FRITHJOF SCHUON? WHAT KIND OF IMPACT DID THEY HAVE ON YOU PERSONALLY? "

I cannot quite remember when I came upon any of these authors but I actually read them individually at first not really connecting them to a particular school of thought. Later, when I read Eliade, Huston Smith and others as an undergraduate, I came to understand there was a perennial philosophy that is rooted in Guenon's work and built upon by Schuon, Comaraswamy and others.

As I said in my answer to the previous question, what I find most compelling in the Traditionalists is the fusion of scholarship, spiritual vision, and practice. This comes across to me as an expression of an authentic form of spirituality and a legitimate lineage of teaching that is deeply committed to seeking the unity behind the multiplicity on the religious level. The Traditionalists endeavor to accomplish what many others mistakenly do not do, and that is provide a way of respectfully honoring our planetary spiritual ancestors and to uncover the underlying unity in the scriptures, practices, rituals and institutions they transmitted and developed over time.

In my view, many today are seeking meaning and spirituality and their longing arises out of the emptiness and meaninglessness that a one sided materialism produces. In their desperation and laxness, they all too often turn to the New Age movement, much of which is shallow, self indulgent, and narcissistic; the blind leading the blind who band together in mutual admiration to invoke the same superficial platitudes in a bid to convince themselves that they are truly "spiritual but not religious". In this respect, I believe the Traditionalists are right: if you are seeking authentic spirituality you need to follow an established path and not imagine that you can walk up and down the aisles of the so-call "spiritual supermarket" and pick and choose items to concoct one to suite your immediate needs.

The Empirical Rules Of Magick 08 Diary

The Empirical Rules Of Magick 08 Diary Cover
You should also keep a daily diary. It too, is a line to your Little Self. Use this to record the events of the day and your thoughts and feelings. These will reflect what is going on inside you. Use it also for introspection. You must do a lot of soul searching to learn about your Little Self, this is most effective when written.

It is even more important to track the progress of your magickal work. Each time you do a spell or ritual record your goal, your feelings before and after and your methods. Before you get to this point, you should also have explored all your feelings associated with it. Then pay careful attention to all that happens to you (part of the reason for the daily diary). Often, a spell will work and we will not even notice.

Since magick works with what we believe, things come to us in the way we expect or allow. When you do a healing, it will tend to look entirely natural, rather than miraculous. If you do a prosperity spell, receiving a tax refund check the following month could be the universe's response. Keep an eye out for any hint of possible results. Even the weakest indication is very positive. It may not be enough to satisfy, but it means that you are being effective. If you keep working, you will be able to improve until you achieve the result you desire. When you give yourself credit for even the smallest success, you build the relationship between you and your Little Self.

Thelema Women Men

Thelema Women Men Image
WOMEN VS. MEN
By: Michelle Hass (in conversation with Scott Szakonyi

"Ok folks, Loki and I have been chatting, and we're ready to raise a ruckus that might go on for months."

Chiniginish and I relish the challenge...with Coyote looking over Our shoulders and chuckling...

"Here's the question: Are women superior to men, and if so, why? I THINK that women are superior to men in the modern world because evolution is lagging society. Most of the evolution of the human race (about 60 million yrs) took place in hunter/gatherer tribes, where aggressive behavior on the part of the male hunters was a survival trait, and relating/caring behavior was a survival trait for females. Now, in the 20 thousand or so years since we have become agrarian, the need for male hunter aggressiveness has gone the way of the Dodo, while the need for relating/caring behavior has become primary. Where does this leave us?

"Well, as I see it, women are almost ideally suited to the overcrowded, communication intensive environment that we call modern society. Men, on the other hand, are like people with no arms playing handball. It's not that we're bad folk, it's just that we were designed by evolution for an environment that hasn't existed for 20 THOUSAND YEARS, which is a real drop in the bucket in terms of evolution. Evolution isn't going to be giving us any help for at least a few million years; maybe never since we are constantly screwing up the gene pool with our wars that leave the genetically defective to breed and send the genetically preferable off to evolutionary dead ends. So all we men can do is try to better ourselves and ask for patience on the part of women, who must feel like the entire male sex has completely missed the boat. "

Well, you've got a nice point, but it assumes something that I believe 'taint necessarily so. Is male aggressiveness part of nature or nurture? The jury seems to be coming back from a long period of deliberation, and it looks like the verdict is NURTURE.

This very nicely dovetails with my own theory of what thelemites refer to as the
"procession of the aeons". In Crowley's notorious Liber Al vel Legis, we are said to be passing from an aeon of belief in suffering male gods and patriarchy to an aeon of belief in the value of Self and of partnership between the sexes.
Crowley called the old aeon the "Aeon of Osiris" and the new the "Aeon of Horus, the Crowned and Conquering Child." The enthroned Child is not masculine or feminine, but androgynous/gynandrous. The aeon before the Osirian was that of Isis, an aeon of Great Mother Goddesses and matriarchy.

My chronology is a little different than that which Crowley attributed to these three epochs of human history so far. Crowley declared that the Aeon of Horus began with the Spring Equinox of 1904+ Common, just before the writing of the Book of the Law. I maintain that the change is still taking place, and had its roots in the 1700s+ Common. The writings of the philosopher Locke were some of the first to make a very important quantum jump, and provided ideological impetus for the vital changes that have and are taking place.

What Locke asserted was that government did not rest on Divine Right, but on the consent of the governed. Human beings were not born to different castes, some fated to serve while others were fated to rule by the grace of the gods. Human beings were born equal, and had certain rights as a birthright: Life, Liberty, the right to pursue Happiness, and the right to security of private property.

This assertion shows up in Liber Al as these statements:

"Every Man and Every Woman is a Star. "
"Do What Thou Wilt Shall Be The Whole Of The Law. "
"Love Is The Law, Love Under Will. "
"Thou hast no right but to do thy Will. "

In a little less arcane language, these statements run thusly:
Every Individual matters.
Every Individual has the right to live, be free and pursue Happiness (harmony with one's life's purpose, or True Will) as they Will.
These rights stop at the boundary of the Wills of others. Live your life as you see fit, but mind your own business and above all, HARM NOBODY. This includes yourself in a very conditional way. You *do* have the right to self destruction, but if you truly believe that you matter, why would you want to?

These assertions are usually encountered firstly in a Locke-inspired document that has passed into the history of this country, the Declaration of Independence. If there is any one document that is a trigger point for the New Aeon, it's that one. The American Revolution was the first time monarchy was cast aside in favor of democracy of a representative sort.

Democracy was tried before, but never quite this way. And despite several course corrections that needed to be made, (the abolishment of Slavery, the giving of Women, Blacks and Amerinds the right to vote) and some that still need to be made (the granting of total equality for all races and sexes, a shift to a more direct method of participation, i.e. Cyber-democracy) the democratic experiment in the United States is the most enduring of all.

Before the 1700s, government was imposed from above, not thought of as flowing from the consent of the governed. Individuals were not accorded rights as a birthright, but were granted rights by the king, usually on a class-by-class basis. Human beings were dealt with as masses and classes, on a Collective basis.

Coincidental with these developments was a surfacing of hermetic thought in a more widespread way then ever before in history. The Rosicrucian and Freemason movements brought hermeticism to a wide audience. Within the ranks of Freemasonry were both common and noble, and often commoners would be lodgemasters in lodges frequented by those of noble birth. Hermetic orders ennobled not by birth, but by level of knowledge and initiation and (hopefully)
by level of spiritual attainment.

Now, this was fine in theory, but unfortunately in practice things weren't so swift. It was only until the mid-1800s and groups like the original Golden Dawn that women had the possibility of initiation. Even now, in Masonic lodges that have lost their occult focus and are now little more than men's clubs, men are ritually strip-searched to assure the initiator that the candidate is indeed male and not a disguised female.

The baggage of the old days of sexism and classism remain in a lot of hermetic orders even today. Crowley himself had serious problems accepting women as equals: he had a rather low opinion of them and was quite cruel to them in numerous cases. But very explicit in the message of the New Aeon is that people are to be dealt with, not by sex or race or social strata but by their inborn, inalienable rights as individuals...as Stars, to use a thelemic term.

The Neo-pagan movement was a definite evolutionary step in defining a New Aeon mode of spirituality. Unlike the traditional hermetic order, Wicca and other forms of Neo-paganism do not have a multiplicity of ranks and a chain of command. Some have three degrees, some two, some only one, that of initiate.
Initiation is not a bestowal of rank, but more a purpose-oriented process. As magickal orders continue to evolve, they will either need to emulate more and more the informality and non-hierarchical non-structure of Neo-paganism or choke on their bloated hierarchies. It is funny when one considers that there is much evidence to suggest that Neo-paganism evolved from the Astrum Argentum and the OTO, and that much of Gardner's groundbreaking work in reconstructing the old pre-Osirian Druidic religion was helped along with the research help of Uncle Al himself.

Perhaps, as the knightly orders of the past were meant as guardians of the Christian Church, there will become a symbiotic connection between Neo-paganism and Magickal orders, especially among those whose non-structure mimics that of the coven. Arguably this symbiosis exists now, and hell, I'm living proof of this.

So what the deuce does this have to do with the sexes? You'll see as I wrap this up. Ok...remember I mentioned that before the Osirian epoch and the patriarchy, which seems to have come in with the rise of the big cities and the transformation from a hunter-gatherer society to an agrarian one (methinks you have placed the transformation a little too far into the past) there was the Isian epoch and the matriarchy? Well, before patriarchal philosophy displaced matriarchalism, women pretty much ran things. They didn't hunt because to place women, who were the living image of the Goddess and the ex-nihilo creatrixes of the next generation, in bodily jeopardy was literally blasphemy. Women were the intermediaries for men to the Goddess, who was unapproachable otherwise. The men had their hunting cults, but they were as insignificant in reality as the Victorian-era anthropologists misread the ancient religion of the Goddess as merely an inferior "fertility cult."

When the transition came to the cities and to patriarchy sometime around 10,000- to 7,500- Common, the long-suppressed males took by force what the Goddesses of the Isian era denied them by their divine decree...power. Male warrior deities replaced female mother deities. The priestesses of the old religions were destroyed. (The Book of Joshua in the Old Testament is a vivid account of one triumph of Osiris over Isis.) And the new order began. But the old matriarchal religions survived for several thousands of years after the turn of the aeon, and it is painfully obvious that the old patriarchal ways will haunt us for thousands of years into the future, even as new ways take hold and new philosophies become more accepted. But it really is nurture rather than nature that makes men aggressive and women passive. Men can learn to be nurturing and loving, and women can learn to be assertive and empowered. In order that we can truly enter this new aeon where all are leaders and all are Stars, we each have to cultivate the "other side" of our Selves. No, women are not superior to men, nor is it the other way around. Every Individual matters. Everyone has the potential to be a King, in the thelemic sense of the word. We need to learn to treat all with dignity, be they material successes or abject material failures.
We need to treat even those still enslaved by the old with as
much dignity as those who have declared their secession from them and their embracing of the New Law.

The evolution is really and truly in our own hands.

Beauty and balance, Will and Love,
Michelle.

The coven that I've been working with in Denver begins its cup blessing by a dialogue between the Priest and the Priestess. Both have a hand each on the athame and the chalice:

Priest: "Be it known that a man is not greater than a woman.

Priestess: "Nor yet is a woman greater than a man"

Priest: "For what one lacks"
Priestess: "The other can provide"

Priest: "As the Athame is to the male"

Priestess: So is the cup to the female.

Both: And when conjoined together, they become one in truth, for there is no greater magick in all the world than that of love.
