I was sent a copy of this book to review back in March. Looking around the blogosphere, I'm thinking that the publisher must be plugged into our informal magick blogging circle because fellow blogger Rob was sent a copy to review as well. I recommend that you take a look at Rob's review in addition to mine, as he makes some good points about the book's weaknesses from the perspective of an experienced magical practitioner. He wound up not recommending the book, and while I agree with a number of his criticisms my impression is more positive so long as its target audience is taken into account.
Let me be clear - this is not a book that I would buy for two reasons. First of all, I am not nor have I ever been a Wiccan, and there are a number of assumptions in the book coming directly from that worldview which I disagree with, in some cases quite strongly. Second of all, I doubt that even an intermediate magical practitioner is going to find anything new or useful in it. Nonetheless, that's not who the book is aimed at. This is the sort of book that is intended to sit on a shelf at a bookstore and attract the attention of seekers who know nothing about magick or Wicca and want to learn about it from a very basic perspective. I don't know that many readers of this blog fall into that category, and the book is certainly not targeted at those of you who come here to read my articles on theoretical models of magick or advanced spellwork techniques.
What I like best about the book is that even if you know absolutely nothing it contains enough information to get you started practicing right away. The techniques that it covers are limited, but one of the things that bothers me about a lot of beginning books on magick is that in too many cases there isn't much "magick" you can really do with them aside from bits of psychological trickery here and there. You don't learn how to do effective magick by reading and studying, you learn how to do it by practicing. The four sections of the book - Altar Magick, Candle Magick, Pendulum Magick, and Healing Magick - give you techniques that are simple but which at the same time can be used to do some genuine magical work. Altar Magick tells you how to set up a basic ritual space, Candle Magick covers some very basic sorcery, Pendulum Magick explains a simple method of divination, and Healing Magick touches on introductory energy work.
That the book is set up to encourage magical practice relates back to my recent discussion with Rob in that there is pretty much no way anyone could pick up this book as an introduction to Wicca and get the idea that Wiccans don't cast spells. I wouldn't have even considered that concept as a possibility except for the media attention around the case of Carole Smith who apparently believes it. Since then, though, I've heard there are apparently a fair number of Wiccans out there who don't practice themselves and a few who will insist that it's not something Wiccans even do. They must be learning that "somewhere", probably from bad introductory books. For all its simplicity, this book is not going to be encouraging that attitude. If this is your first exposure to Wicca, which seems to be the author's intent, you'll understand right away that generally speaking Wiccans do cast spells and at the same time learn a few simple ones of your own that can help you out right away.
In Rob's review, he comments that he isn't clear on why the book leads off with Altar Magick, as he considers it the weakest section. From a beginner's standpoint I think it makes sense, though - if you're going to sit down and do some magick you need a space to perform it in before getting started. And while advanced practioners see an altar as a very simple thing - flat surface, some images, some tools, and you're done - one of the things that I have learned over the years of trying to coach people through the casting of magical spells is that rank beginners are unsure about "everything". As I see it the author's intent with this section was to go into enough step-by-step detail regarding the creation of an altar space that most of these questions would be answered. "Do it however you want" doesn't work with novices. Even if you say, "Some magicians do it this way, some do it that way" they'll still ask you to tell them which one is better. And "whichever one feels most natural to you," the correct answer, usually only confuses them.
As an aside, I'm convinced that this is not because beginners are necessarily stupid, but rather that there's so much nonsense about magick in the popular culture that it's hard to cut through it all. Movies and television programs constantly depict spells in which if one tiny thing is overlooked or done wrong the consequences are disastrous, which is nothing like reality. The free-flowing, artistic aspects of magick are rarely discussed or even addressed in media treatments. Rather, it's all about whether or not you can pronounce "wingardium leviosa" with exactly the correct intonation. Once you start practicing and get a feel for how the magick works you can experience for yourself how ridiculous this mindset is, but how is a beginner supposed to know? A book like this, that gets you working magick right away, can help.
This fear of doing something wrong is also one of the reasons I think the author chose not to include various negative symbols in the book. While I think that the "Wiccan Rede" and "Threefold Law" concepts the book emphasizes are beyond silly ("Harm None" is ridiculous because you can't exist without harming something, and the "Threefold Law" is in my experience an unsupported superstition), I can see where the emphasis of positive symbolism can serve to reassure the beginning practitioner that they're not going to, say, unleash an army of Deadites if they can't quite remember that phrase from "The Day the Earth Stood Still". More advanced magick does require exploration of those darker paths, but so long as this is understood there's nothing wrong with starting off on the the brighter, happier ones. It's also true that the methods in this book are really too basic for sending out curses safely - that requires a more detailed understanding of containment structures, Godhead assumption, delivering charges, and so forth than I think would be appropriate for a book written at this level.
So my take is that this book is a decent introduction to Wiccan magick and a beginning student could certainly do a lot worse, judging from some of the attitudes that I have encountered over the years in the Pagan community. At the same time, though, keep in mind that being neither a beginner nor a Wiccan it's hard for me to compare it with other books on the same topic written for that particular audience as I've hardly read any of them. Also, if you already have a magical practice and some basic technical understanding you're going to find something more advanced than this book a lot more useful.

Well, that has changed, as of now. Over the next few weeks, the Alpha Omega is taking the lead once again, this time in providing you with one valuable resource after the other in regards to the Independent Practice of the Magic of Light.

This is the entire mission of our order, put into its simplest terms.
Independent practitioners have had my Ritual Magic Manual to assist them in their practice for over a decade already. Most independents, for whatever the reason, prefer not to work in a traditional order structure. Then there is the problem that most Golden Dawn orders other than the Alpha Omega do not provide any magical training at all to Outer Order initiates.
Thus there is a huge body of people out there who have been left until now with little guidance from Golden Dawn Adepts in their independent practice of Ritual Magic. The Alpha Omega is now stepping forward, as a community service, to better meet the needs of Independent Practitioners of the Magic of Light.
Today, it is my pleasure to unveil a bold new A.O. initiative. As the first step in our "1,000 Points of Light" initiative, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and our parent order, the Rosicrucian Order of Alpha et Omega would like to help ignite "1,000 Points of Light" around the world, with the goal of fostering the creation of 1,000 new Personal Temples.
Creating a Personal Temple will give your magic great power, because you build energy through constant magical practice in the same consecrated space. There are plenty of good resources available on how to create your own personal temple as well as how to craft magical tools. We encourage you to use these resources, together with your own personal creativity, to create your own, unique personal temple.
A personal temple does not need to be complicated. Your tools can be Golden Dawn style, Wiccan style, or whatever style suits you. What is important is that you dedicate a sacred space where you can practice Ritual Magic on a regular basis. It can be as simple or as elaborate as you like.
As I mention in the Ritual Magic Manual, if need be, you can practice Golden Dawn magic with nothing other than your index finger! On the other hand, you could craft all of the wands, swords, banners, robes, etc. that make up a full Golden Dawn temple. The choice is yours - and yours alone.
If you would like to do something in between, for Golden Dawn magic, what is most essential is to create an altar space and to place something to represent each of the four elements on it.
Some people use a fan for air, dirt for earth, a cup of water, and a candle for fire. Others like to craft and consecrate classic Golden Dawn magical implements; an air dagger, a fire wand, a water cup, and an earth pantacle, each with the correct sigils and names of power.
Certain Wiccan practitioners prefer to work with a wand for air, an athame for fire, a cup for water, and a pentacle for earth. Other Pagan practitioners reverse the wand and athame, more closely resembling the Golden Dawn arrangement.
Personally, I recommend to begin with the basic components used in the Golden Dawn's magical Eucharist; a red rose for air, a cup of wine, a candle for fire, and bread and salt for Earth.

You will quickly see for yourself how much it helps to have a dedicated space for your magical practice. You do not need an entire room for this, although that would be ideal. When an entire room is not possible, you can always store your altar in a corner of a room, then bring it out when you are ready to practice. With time you will begin to feel a sense of awe, a sense of the sacred, merely by entering into your personal temple space.
Our first goal with this 1,000 Points of Light initiative, is to motivate you to create your own personal temple, and to help individual practitioners to create 1,000 new personal temples around the world. Can you imagine the power for spiritual growth that will be generated by 1,000 new personal temples all around the world?

In response to my most recent blog, on Lineage and the Golden Dawn, the anonymous Mr. "James Crumpit" (mr crumpit@...) wrote on Robert Zink's Esoteric Order of the Golden Dawn forum:
Dear David and "The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Alpha et Omega, etc."Frater TDO" is not a member of the Esoteric Order of the Golden Dawn, nor are there any members by the name "VH Soror FSO," so do not take their opinions as those of our order. Also, this forum is not the EOGD forum, but is a talk box for the GD community hosted by the EOGD. Furthermore, I don't know why you make any noise about lineage, when you and your order (with the overly lengthy name which you were forced to change to per court order) have absolutely no legitimate lineage to
speak of.
You can't claim lineage through Israel Regardie, nor do you (anymore). You founded your own version of the third order, which you currently claim lineage through, which doesn't count as lineage since you founded it yourself. Also you can't claim lineage to Mathers because you have the address of a Masonic Hall he worked in for a period and rent the building now and again to perform your garage-style version of Golden Dawn ceremonies.
Get off the lineage kick. Nobody buys it. Repeating yourself over and over doesn't make your points any more valid.

The aforementioned anonymously published attack website definitively linked to Robert Zink, for example, (like many other anonymous attack sites and blogs) shows a cropped photograph of me dressed up like Adolph Hitler and claiming to be "proof" I am a Nazi."
This is, of course, complete nonsense. It is common knowledge in the Golden Dawn community that I care deeply about the environment - and passionately about the protection of species from extinction - and that this photograph originally appeared on the front page of the University of California at Berkeley newspaper......and was taken at an environmental protest that I was involved in. This was a street theater environmental action - and I was in character - SPOOFING Adolph Hitler, mocking racism, and calling for interracial and global unity tosave the Earth fromenvironmental holocaust.
I am as much as a Nazi for playing Hitler - as is fellow actor Sir Alec Guiness - who played both Hitler and Obi Wan Kanobi - or Sir Ian McKellen - who played both Hitler and Gandalf! Let's be real. You can't be remotely anti-Semitic and embrace the Jewish mysteries that are part of the Golden Dawn. Racism is a destructive philosophy not only against my beliefs, but also against my vows, and against the Golden Dawn.What doesn't seem to be against some people's beliefs, vows, or love for the Golden Dawn, however - is defamation and attack on the reputation of the Golden Dawn. For what? So that seekers won't realize how little these people know about basic the deeper mysteries of the Golden Dawn? Do these people not realize that they are harming the reputation of the entire Golden Dawn tradition?... or do they simply not care - because they see the GD as little more than a vehicle to promote "New Age" seminars?If this were not sad enough - recent months have seen theentire Golden Dawn community attacked by outside agitators on new attack blogs - alleging that all Golden Dawn orders are Nazi fronts and linked to the Greek fascist party calling itself Golden Dawn (Chrysi Ayvi).Is it not time for such madness to stop once and for all? I get boiling mad at when Golden Dawn initiates are attacked no matter who it is being attacked. For example, I recently defended the brothers and sisters of the Esoteric Order of the Golden Dawn when Pat Zalewksi published the following post on his OGD forum:GENERALLY SPEAKING, THE BEST WAY TO (CHOOSE A GD ORDER) IS TO LOOK AT THE WEBSITES OF THE ORDERS INVOLVED, AND WRITE TO THE ONES IN WHICH YOU'RE INTERESTED. MY ONLY WARNING WOULD BE TO BE VERY, VERY CAREFUL! THERE ARE SOME CULTS OUT THERE MASQUERADING AS GOLDEN DAWN ORDERS, and the only way you'll ever really know is by trusting your intuition AND keeping your wits about you at all times.Pat Zalewski then went on and wrote himself:NONE OF WHAT IS ASKED OF A STUDENT SHOULD BE AGAINST THEIR MORAL AND LEGAL OBLIGATIONS. THIS IS USUALLY CIRCUMVENTED IN SOME GROUPS BY A STATEMENT THAT THE SECRET CHIEFS HAVE SANCTIONED IT- LIKE FATWA OR PAPAL BULL. WE HAVE ALL HEARD OF INCIDENTS LIKE THIS AND THEY HAVE NO PLACE IN THE GD TEMPLE AND ARE FOR A GD CULT.PatThis kind of nonsense has gone on far too long. We have all seen the anonymous attack blogs out there like the Golden Dawn Observer and the Cult Watch blog that call the Esoteric Order of the Golden Dawn a cult. These are, of course, just as condemnable as those calling our order a nest of Nazis! And now that are seeing not just our order -but the ENTIRE Golden Dawn community being called nests of Nazi's! What will be next? Outside forces calling all Golden Dawn orders cults? The Golden Dawn is already on the official French list of sects.Under present circumstances, I find it extremely short-sighted for Pat Zalewksi to be making posts like the one above. In reality, we all know that there are no cults in the Golden Dawn - just like there are no Nazis - because - if you ARE a cult - if you ARE a Nazi - you are NOT Golden Dawn!If an order using the name Golden Dawn practices cult-like activity - they are NOTGolden Dawn! There are no Golden Dawn cults! Just like a racist Greek group using the name Golden Dawn for their fascism - isNOT Golden Dawn!Pat Zalewski instead of spreading false and harmful rumors about GD cults - should instead clarify that there are NO cults in the Golden Dawn and outright reject any order doing that - as NOT part of the Golden Dawn - instead of scaring people into believing there are "Golden Dawn Nazis" or "Golden Dawn Cults" - when any such groups are evidently NOT the Golden Dawn.You will recall that, for several months now, the HOGD/AO has been calling for greater harmony in the Golden Dawn community. We have invited all Brother and Sister GD initiates to a Golden Dawn Harmony celebration to be hosted next Vernal Equinox by the Ahathoor Temple in Paris. This invitation still stands. We have also invited all Golden Dawn leaders to contact us to negotiate the mutual removal of objectionable materials from our respective websites, fora, and blogs. To their credit - until last week - both Robert Zink and Pat Zalewksi had joined together with our order for several months - in not approving any posts attacking other Golden Dawn orders or their leaders. It is most unfortunate that attack posts are beginning to appear on the various Yahoo fora once again. It is even more unfortunate that neither Robert Zink nor Pat Zalewski have so far shown any willingness whatsoever to begin - together with our order - to remove on a reciprocal basis - objectionable materials from our respective fora, websites, and blogs.The importance of beginning such a clean-up has been underscored by the appearance in recent months of anonymous blogs attacking all Golden Dawn orders - falsely linking them to the Greek fascist party unfortunately also using the Golden Dawn name.Let there be no doubt about it - We are ALL under attack - every single brother and sister of every Golden Dawn order.
