Religion Belief Selling Our Soul To Irrationality

Religion Belief Selling Our Soul To Irrationality Image

Faith is just "BELIEF NOT BASED ON EVIDENCE

Carl Sagan stated that faith is the belief in the absence of evidence. "For me, believing when there is no compelling evidence is a mistake."

For Richard Dawkins, faith is merely belief without evidence; "A PROCESS OF ACTIVE NON-THINKING." A practice which only degrades our understanding of the natural world by allowing anyone to make a claim about reality that is based solely on their personal thoughts, and possibly distorted perceptions.

Faith is in general the persuasion of the mind that a certain statement is true, belief in and assent to the truth of what is declared by another, based on his or her" SUPPOSED AUTHORITY AND TRUTHFULNESS."

We will not argue about the importance of Faith in Religion. Muslims and Christians kill themselves in the name of Faith.

In mythological Ufology, the rhetoric of people like Michael Salla, Alfred Webre or Richard Boylan demand faith as primary condition. Without faith, the whole exopolitical and exobiological discourse is meaningless.

This is the tradition in UFO mythology. We must always believe in what these people say, even if they have no scientific background at all." IN FACT WE MUST DENY SCIENCE AND INSTEAD BELIEVE IN PSEUDO-SCIENTIFIC, UNSUBSTANTIATED RANTS. "

We need to discredit the whole scientific establishment if we want to believe in what Boylan, Webre, Salla or Greer say.

"WE MUST "SELL OUR SOUL TO IRRATIONALITY" AND FORGET LOGICAL, RATIONAL, CRITICAL THINKING."

We are back thousands of years, again in a dark age of gods and all-knowing shamans.

We are into superstition, and in the political context, ready for Fascism and Authoritarianism.

But what are the motivations of all these fantasists?

There could be several motivations.

"EGO, PROFITEERING, RESENTMENT AGAINST SOCIETY AND SCIENCE, AND THE WILL TO CONTROL PEOPLE FOR THE PLEASURE OF IT. "

Also we must consider the possibility that some of them believe in what they say, but usually the insane rhetoric is not clearly elaborated.

Personally I do not believe that they are professional disinformers. This would be the counter-conspiracy, the echo, the opposite delirium.

What is true is that the whole pseudo-ufolofgical scheme works well for those in Power.

Keeping people Ignorant and superstitious is what the Big Corporations need to remain in control.

"COLLECTIVE HYPNOSIS, IGNORANCE, BELIEF IN THE BIG COSMIC BROTHER, THESE ARE THE NEW "OPIUM FOR THE PEOPLE"."

Wiccan Morality

Wiccan Morality Image
REAL MAGIC SPELLS have fascinated us for thousands of years. People are intrigued and obsessed in how spells could work for and against a person's interest and desires. Magic spells are not only performed to achieve personal gain, they are also practiced as part of a religious belief system such as Wicca.

Wicca is deeply rooted to ancient pagan beliefs which emerged hundreds of years ago. Gerald Gardner claimed that the practices and beliefs of Wicca were based from a secretive group that had accepted him as a member. Wiccan spells are often referred to as "magick" rather than the common "magic." This differentiates real magic from common conjuring and illusion tricks practiced by stage performers in shows.

When Wicca was first developed, the government and public society at large was scared by it and so persecuted witches and wizards, putting them to death. Even now although witch-hunting no longer occurs it is common for Wicca followers to practice their arts in secret so as to avoid scrutiny or ridicule from unbelievers. All Wiccans agree that Satan-worship is not part of their practices.

Nature and its elements: earth, air, fire, and water, are loved and revered in Wicca. Wiccans consider themselves "at one" with nature. Harming nature would cause nature to harm them back, so all Wicca spells are white magic and are intended for good purposes only.

All who practice REAL MAGIC SPELLS do so in strict accordance with "The Wiccan Rede." This deep rooted law of Wiccan magic states, "do what ye will, harm ye none." This simply means that magic spells can be used freely as long as no one gets hurt in the process. A related commandment is "The Law of Three" which states that "harm will be returned three-fold", further encouragement to only use magic for good.

Magic is similar to Christian prayers. Spells are part of Wiccan rituals although not all Wiccans cast spells. Spells can be both used to help or hurt and manipulate other people, but Wiccan followers are strictly prohibited from using spells that will harm other people in accordance with "The Rede."

Before a Wiccan performs any real magic spells, incantation or ritual, they first reflect on their intentions and the consequences and repercussions of the act. All its possible effects are thoroughly considered to make sure the spell is good and pure. Most spells are followed precisely as they are written, although there are times when the spells can be modified to fit the witch or wizard's power, personality and situation.

Some people may show wonder, disbelief, or even fear of the powers that Wiccans possess. But understanding the basic beliefs and principles of Wiccans shows us that what they do is not against the fundamental principles of all moral and wise teachings for human beings, which is to share life and embrace nature without harming others.

Ethics In Magick

Ethics In Magick Cover
A local group recently sponsored a seminar on the ethics of magick. I was unable to attend but heard the tapes of the session. Several people on this echo were present and had thoughtful things to say as did the others in attendance. I would like to address a few ideas that came up there and, of course, are significant to all people that work magick.

The question of hexing came up. A rousing chorus ensued saying essentially that many folks there felt their own ethical model does not allow hexing. Initially, I put myself in that group as well. I am not a bad person, I do not intentionally hurt people. After Some thought, though, I asked myself this question.

If there is a conceivable ethical situation where I might sucker punch someone, why would there not be such a time to zap them with the same magnitude of magick?

If I punch someone when they have no known defense against me, I am opening the serious potential to harm them. My punch might not hurt them at all, it might surprise them more than hurt them, it might hurt them enough that they get the message I was sending, or it might blind or even kill them. I would not know until after the fact. If I felt justified in punching them, I would probably do it. If they turned and destroyed me, I would have to question my judgement afterwards. Likewise if I blinded them.

Acceptance of the karmic debt was raised as part of this justification cycle. By going ahead and hitting them, I tacitly or implicitly accept the debt. Personal destruction or harming the other guy, it is the same, I accept the debt by my action.

Now where is the ethical question here?

I have often done things, things as simple as saying something in a certain way that I immediately want to retract. If I hit this fellow, I probably would want to take it back afterward. Is it ethical to act in a fashion that given a little thought you would realize you will regret later?

Magick works in the same way. Presuming the ability to control the magickal zap to the relative intensity of the sucker punch, the results are just as unknown. So you accept the karmic debt, so you zap Away.

"Do what ye will" as long as you accept the debt makes it ethical? I don't think so, I think it is in fact unethical to hit or zap the person. But I might do it anyway. It is not really so much a question of ethics as it is a question of responsibility.

No doubt Ollie North thinks that it is unethical to break the law. But he did. No doubt Jim Wright takes the ethics of public office very seriously, but he is now in deep refritos over an ethical dilemma of his own making.

Shit Happens. (For those of you with new babies, Doo Doo Happens.) Ethics is a model of what we would like in the ideal. That ideal we measure ourselves against. We can parade case examples all day to test this conclusion but it is still unethical to harm another. But we do it, both physically and magickly.

So, ethical hexing, there is no such thing. I caste a hurt-you-this-much zap on the intended, I have acted unethically. "An ye harm none." No disclaimer or release for special situations is given or implied. She will see me break this, karma will see that the ripples in the pool come back to me. All together, She will see me take responsibility, ethics be damned.

One more time, the chorus swells and this time I am sure that I am part of that group. There is no ethical justification for hexing. Just don't piss me off though, I might be willing to take responsibility for my actions.

Concentration

Concentration Cover Another key element to Thelemic mysticism is the ability to concentrate. This skill has two modalities: the first is the rapid, accurate, and efficient movement of thought (which is the realm of magick) and the other is the stopping of thought altogether (which is accomplished in Yoga). In the first, it is the Manipulation of all ideas into one idea, and in the second is the taking of that one thought and reducing it to nothing. Of this skill, Crowley writes:

For concentration does indeed unlock all doors; it lies at the heart of every practice as it is of the essence of all theory; and almost all the various rules and regulations are aimed at securing adeptship in this matter. All the subsidiary work — awareness, one-pointedness, mindfulness and the rest — is intended to train you to this.

Concentration is essentially the prerequisite for all sustained success, not only in spiritual practices, but in day-to-day life as well. The general program for developing concentration is borrowed almost completely from the practice of Yoga within the Hindu and Buddhist systems. Crowley gives a general overview of the Techniques in two books: Eight Lectures on Yoga and in the section called "Mysticism" in his opus, Magick (Book 4).

What Aleister Crowley Says About Reasons

What Aleister Crowley Says About Reasons Cover
"But it so happens that everything on this planet is, ultimately, irrational; there is not, and cannot be, any reason for the causal connexion of things, if only because our use of the word "reason" already implies the idea of causal connexion. But, even if we avoid this fundamental difficulty, Hume said that causal connexion was not merely unprovable, but unthinkable; and, in shallower waters still, one cannot assign a true reason why water should flow down hill, or sugar taste sweet in the mouth. Attempts to explain these simple matters always progress into a learned lucidity, and on further analysis retire to a remote stronghold where every thing is irrational and unthinkable.

If you cut off a man's head, he dies. Why? Because it kills him. That is really the whole answer. Learned excursions into anatomy and physiology only beg the question; it does not explain why the heart is necessary to life to say that it is a vital organ. Yet that is exactly what is done, the trick that is played on every inquiring mind. Why cannot I see in the dark? Because light is necessary to sight. No confusion of that issue by talk of rods and cones, and optical centres, and foci, and lenses, and vibrations is very different to Edwin Arthwait's treatment of the long-suffering English language.

Knowledge is really confined to experience. The laws of Nature are, as Kant said, the laws of our minds, and, as Huxley said, the generalization of observed facts.

It is, therefore, no argument against ceremonial magic to say that it is "absurd" to try to raise a thunderstorm by beating a drum; it is not even fair to say that you have tried the experiment, found it would not work, and so perceived it to be "impossible." You might as well claim that, as you had taken paint and canvas, and not produced a Rembrandt, it was evident that the pictures attributed to his painting were really produced in quite a different way.

You do not see why the skull of a parricide should help you to raise a dead man, as you do not see why the mercury in a thermometer should rise and fall, though you elaborately pretend that you do; and you could not raise a dead man by the aid of the skull of a parricide, just as you could not play the violin like Kreisler; though in the latter case you might modestly add that you thought you could learn.

This is not the special pleading of a professed magician; it boils down to the advice not to judge subjects of which you are perfectly ignorant, and is to be found, stated in clearer and lovelier language, in the Essays of Thomas Henry Huxley. " — Aleister Crowley

International

International Image

Book: International by Aleister Crowley

An archive of The International, a literary magazine which included essays, poetry, plays and libri by Aleister Crowley and works by other authors. The International was a literary and arts journal founded by George Sylvester Viereck, published in New York between WWI and WWII. For a number of years during the period of silence between The Equinox Volume I and Volume III, Aleister Crowley was a contributing editor for this journal and many essays, poems and plays appeared under various names (including Baphomet and The Master Therion) authored by him. For example, the first publication of the Gnostic Mass, which became Liber XV, appeared in this journal. Also, several of Crowley's Simon Iff stories appeared in the pages of The International, under the pseudonym Edward Kelly.

Kenneth Anger

Kenneth Anger Cover Kenneth Anger (born Kenneth Wilbur Anglemeyer February 3, 1927) is an American underground avant-garde film-maker and author.

His short films, which he has been producing since 1937, have variously merged surrealism with homoerotica and the occult. He has focused upon occult themes in many his films, being fascinated by the notorious English occultist Aleister Crowley and following Crowley's religion of Thelema. This influence is evident from films like 'Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome' (1954), 'Invocation of My Demon Brother' (1969) and 'Lucifer Rising' (1972).

During the 1960s and 70s, Anger associated and worked with a number of different figures in popular culture and the occult, including Anton Szandor LaVey( founder of The First Church of Satan), Mick Jagger and Jimmy Page. Anger has described film makers such as Auguste and Louis Lumiere and Georges Melies as influences, and has been cited as an important influence on later film directors like Martin Scorsese, David Lynch and John Waters.

The mid 1960s saw the arrival of the hippie scene and the increasing use of the mind-altering drugs that Anger himself had been using for many years. In particular, the hallucinogen LSD, which at the time was still legal in the United States, was very popular, and in 1966 Anger released a version of his earlier film, 'Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome', entitled the 'Sacred Mushroom Edition' which was screened to people whilst taking LSD, thereby heightening their sensory experience.

By this time, Anger had become well known throughout the underground scene in the United States, and several cinemas across the country screened his better known films all in one event. With this growing fame, Anger began to react to publicity in much the same way as his idol Aleister Crowley had done, for instance describing himself as "the most monstrous moviemaker in the underground", a pun on the fact that Crowley had been labelled "the wickedest man in the world" by the British tabloids in the 1920s.

Anger's fame on the underground circuit allowed him to increasingly associate with other celebrities, including Anton Szandor LaVey, the founder of The First Church of Satan. The two became good friends and would remain so for many years.

Anger, born in 1930, was a child Hollywood movie star, and became a devoted disciple of Aleister Crowley. Anger, like Crowley, is a Magus, and appears to be the heir to Crowley. Anger believed that, "Lucifer is the patron saint of the visual arts. Color, form - all these are the work of Lucifer."

Book: Konx Om Pax Essays In Light by Aleister Crowley

he first facsimile edition of this masterwork of Hermeticism and Magick, described by its author as "the most remarkable book on the Mystic Path ever written." It has long been treasured by students and collectors in its first edition of 1907. Crowley poured his occult knowledge, particularly that which he learned in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, into the four essays contained therein. It is an essential work for all students of the Golden Dawn and Magick.

My favorite book! A good familiarity with late 19th & Early 20th Century occult personalities, (especially the Golden Dawn) is very helpful. "The rites of modern occult magic" by Francis King, (also published under other titles) is a good primer. A scream from front to back. Crowley's biting satire is in top form here. This also contains my favorite selections of his poetry, esp "The disappointed artist" & "The suspicious earl".Guarenteed to offend almost everyone! This is a must for Crowleyites. This edition is becoming harder to find.

Crowley Magick Was Performed On The Astral Plane

Crowley Magick Was Performed On The Astral Plane Image
Most of Crowley's magick was performed on the astral plane, and usually involved some form of sexual congress:

"The one really easy 'physical' operation which the Body of Light can perform is Congressus Subtilis. The emanations of the 'Body of Desire' of the material being whom one visits are, if the visit be agreeable, so potent that one spontaneously gains sub stance in the embrace. There are many cases on record of Children having been born as the result of such unions." These "children" were elementals or companions. If the former, they acted as servitors, like the witch's familiar; if the latter, as links through which he was able to communicate with denizens of astral realms consonant with the nature of the succubus. Thus Growley gained direct access to regions hidden from occultists using the old ceremonial techniques of evocation. It also enabled him, in many cases, to dispense with a medium between himself and the entities contacted, for by sexual union with a non- terrestrial entity he was able to enter the stream of non-human contacts of which Dion Fortune often makes mention.

The "Body of Light" is so called because it was anciently known that man resurrected, not in his physical body (as believed by Christians) but in a more tenuous and ethereal vehicle which rose from the dark of death, the abyss, like the stars which rose resplendent from below the horizon. The astral body or ghost was the most ancient type of resurrection because-according to Egyptian doctrine-when the mummy transformed in the underworld of Amenti, when it spiritualized or "obtained a soul among the stars of heaven", the individual rose again on the horizon as the constellation Orion-the Star of Horus-the Sahu, or glorified body resurrected eternally in the fields of Sekhet Aarhu (Space or Eternity).

Orion represented the risen Horus (the glorified deceased) at least 6,000 years ago, when the Star (astral body) rose up from the dark*death in the West, the underworld of Amenti. (See The Book of the Dead, Chapter LXXXIX, etc.)

The stellar or astral body is also called the Desire Body because it is the vehicle of sentience in the human organism. This body was ascribed to the most ancient Star god, Set, who was also a god of Fire. To Horus, his twin, was ascribed the spiritual body represented by the Sun. The link between star- or fire-gods and the Sun is the lunar current typified by Thoth, Lord of Magick and Scribe of the Gods. Thoth is sacred to the youthful god Khonsu, of whom Crowley as a Magus claimed to be an avatar, thus identifying himself as the link between the Beast (Set, Lord of the Stars) and the Angel (Horns, Lord of the Sun). Sex being the mainspring of the astral body, it was through its use that Crowley accomplished most of his magick on the subtle planes.)

The Empirical Rules Of Magick 05 Affirmation And Visualization

The Empirical Rules Of Magick 05 Affirmation And Visualization Cover

Affirmation

The message you give to your Little Self is the most important aspect of Magick. The whole process is communicating the right message. Desire and expectancy are the two most important messages. But often these do not get across. The Little Self has the understanding of a child. There are certain messages that work well and quite a few that work disastrously. You must learn how to talk to your Little Self.

The Little Self understands images and feelings; it does not understand negatives or time. When you say "I will not fail," the image in your mind is that of failure. The mess-age to another person would be what you mean, because they understand the negation, "not." The message to the subconscious is "I will fail." Never, never, never use a negative when talking to your Little Self.

If you change your message to, "I will succeed," you still have a problem. Since the Little Self does not understand time as we do, it will perpetually see success as being in the future. Success will never arrive. The proper message would be, "I succeed." This is not the way we are used to thinking, but it is necessary for magickal work. Always formulate your goals this way when you begin a ritual or spell. In addition, the more you think in this way in everyday life, the more powerful will be the positive messages to your Little Self.

Visualization

The images which you give your Little Self are even more important. It is the images which your words conjure that actually do the communicating. When you choose your goal, you should try to choose one or more images to represent it. The image must include you in it, either see yourself in a scene or picture it as if looking out of your eyes. The scene should represent to you exactly what you desire.

The more you imagine in your scene, the better. Details, smells, sounds and textures all help enormously. The scene is most effective when it brings up all the emotions that you would feel if you were actually there. A drawing or picture is a good aid. Surround yourself with as many things you can find that make you think of your goal. Imagine you have what you want and know you have what you want. That is a successful ritual.

Hold the cup high, circumambulate once, saying: "So therefore first, the priest who governeth the works of fire must sprinkle with the lustral water of the loud resounding sea." At the West, use the cup to trace a large golden circle in the Air. In it, draw an electric blue invoking water pentagram. Draw the Eagle Kerub, say: "Mph Arsel G aiol." Holding the cup high in the air, say: "In the names and letters of the Great Western Quadrangle, I invoke ye, ye angels of the Watchtower of the West." Replace cup on altar.
7- Walk to the East. Take your Air dagger and turn outward. Shake one to the left, right and center. Hold the dagger and walk round the altar once, saying: "Such a fire existeth, extending through the rushing of air. Or even a fire formless, when cometh the image of a voice. Or even a flashing light, abounding, revolving, whirling forth, crying aloud." At the East, use your dagger to make a large golden circle, in that, a bright blue invoking pentagram of air. In the center, make the sign of Aquairus (Air Kerub, Aquairus). With your dagger, point to the center, say: "Oro Ibah Aozpi." Hold dagger high, say: "In the names and letters of the Great Eastern Quadrangle, I invoke ye, ye angels of the Watchtower of the East." Replace dagger on the altar.
8- Walk to the North of the Altar. Take your Penacle, shake to the left, right and center. Hold it by the black section. Hold it high, circumambulate once saying: "Stoop not down in that darkly splendid world wherein continually lieth a faithless depth and Hades wrapped in gloom, delighting in unintelligible images, precipitous, winding: A black ever-rolling Abyss, ever espousing a body unluminous, formless and void." At the north, draw a golden circle with your pentagram. In it, draw a blue Invoking Pentagram of Earth. In that, draw the sign of Taurus. Point to the center with the pentagram, say: "Emor Dial Hectega." Hold the Pentagram high, say: "In the names and letters of the Great Northern Quadrangle of the North, I invoke ye, ye angels of the Watchtower of the North." Replace the Pentagram on the altar. Move to the west and face east behind the altar.
9- Over the altar and the Tablet of Union, make "The rending of the veil". Say: "Ol Sonuf Vaorsagi Goho Iada Balta." "Elexarpeh Comananu Tabitom." "Zodakara Eka Zodakara Od Zodameranu." "Odo Kikle Qaa Piap Piamoel Od Vaoan."
10- Now say: "I invoke ye, ye angels of the Celestial Spheres, whose dwelling is in the invisible. Ye are the guardians of the gates of the Universe. Be ye also the guardians of this mystic sphere. Keep far removed the evil and the unbalanced. Strengthen and inspire me so that I may preserve unsullied this abode of the mysteries of the eternal Gods. Let my sphere be pure and holy so that I may enter in and become a partaker of the secrets of the light devine." Spend a few moments trying to balance the four magickal elements here at the center of your circle.
11- Move to the northeast corner, face outward, say: "The visible sun is the dispenser of light to the Earth. Let me therefore form a vortex in this chamber that the invisible sun of the Spirit may shine therein from above."
12- Circumambulate three times around your circle. Each time you pass the East, make the sign of the Enterer in the direction you are going, that is, straight ahead of you. As you go, feel the energy build up a powerful vortex. After the third pass of the east, go to the west and face east.
13- Give the sign of the Enterer, say: "Holy are thou, Lord of the Universe." Make the sign of the Enterer again, say: "Holy art thou, whom nature hath not formed." Again make the sign of the Enterer, say: "Holy art thou, the vast and mighty one. Lord of the light and of the darkness." Now make the sign of Silence.
14- Perform your Magick.
15- When you have finished, say: "Unto thee, sole wise, sole eternal and merciful one. Be the praise and glory forever, who has permitted me who now standeth humbly before thee to enter this far into the sanctuary of the mysteries. Not unto me but unto Thy name be the glory. Let the influences of Thy diving ones descend upon my head, and teach me the value of self-sacrifice so that I shrink not in the hour of trial, but that thus my name may be written on high and my genius stand in the presence of the holy ones."

The Tenth Word Abrahadabra

The Tenth Word Abrahadabra Cover This last word of the Nepios
is also the first word of Chapter Three
of the Book of the Law.
ABRAHADABRA is sometimes called “the Word of the Aeon.”
Like ‘Nepios’ it has the value of four hundred and eighteen.
The Prophet translated this word into English as
“the Voice of the Chief Seer.”
Its eleven letters represent the Great Work
as the union of the human five
and the divine six.
It is spoken by the adept and the angel together
in their consummated interpenetration.
In order to accomplish our True Wills,
to achieve the Great Work,
the Summum Bonum,
True wisdom and Perfect Happiness,
let us INVOKE OFTEN.
And may the one who invoketh often
behold the Formless Fire,
with trembling and bewilderment;
and in the lengthening of that meditation,
resolve it into coherent and intelligible symbols,
and hear the articulate utterance of that Fire,
interpret the thunder thereof
as a still small voice in the heart.
And may the Fire reveal to the eyes
the aspirant's own image in its own true glory;
and speak in the ears
the Mystery that is the adept’s own right Name.

AMEN.

God Will In Thelema And God Plan In Boulema

God Will In Thelema And God Plan In Boulema Cover
The will of God is in a way subordinate to His Plan (ultimate intention), or Blueprint of History. The Greek words to describe each in the NT are thelema (will) and boulema (plan). The word thelema is used about 60 times in the NT. It is usually translated "will". It denotes the will in the sense of the desire or wish. However, the word boulema refers to one's resolve. It goes beyond a mere desire. It denotes the actual plan, the intention, or the outworking of the will. It is only used twice in the NT, but in both cases we can note its distinction from thelema.

For example, in Acts 27: 43 Paul was being taken prisoner to Rome. A storm had arisen, and the ship was grounded on a reef. The soldiers wanted to kill the prisoners to prevent them from escaping. 27. But the Centurion, willing (boulomai, planning or intending) to save Paul, kept them from their purpose (boulema, the plan, or intention). Fortunately for Paul, the Centurion had more than a willing desire to save Paul. He also had the power to plan and to carry out his plan (boulema). This indicated more than a mere desire to save Paul's life. He carried it out as part of his plan.

The second passage where boulema is used is much clearer, for we already quoted it in Romans 9:19, in regard to Pharaoh; 19. Why doth He yet find fault? For who hath resisted His will (boulema, plan or intention)? You see, the will (desire) of God was expressed in Moses' statement: "Let my people go". Pharaoh was able to resist God's thelema will, or desire. The story of Pharaoh makes that obvious. But there was a boulema plan or intention, that Pharaoh knew nothing about, and this he could not resist, for this was in the mind of God, not the will of man. It was bound up in the sovereignty of God, not the authority of man. And this plan perfectly expressed in verse 17, where Paul quotes from Exodus 9:16:

16. And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to show in thee My power; and that My name may be declared throughout all the earth.

It was God's will for Pharaoh to let Israel go. But it was in God's plan that Pharaoh resist God's will. Thus, God hardened Pharaoh's heart, in order to carry out that plan. This may seem like a terrible contradiction. Why would God create His own opposition and harden Pharaoh's heart, causing him to resist the will of God? It is no more contradictory than with the two covenants. The Abrahamic covenant gave men the inheritance by unconditional promise; while the Mosaic covenant made it conditional. This is not contradictory, but rather a paradox. As a consequence, man is judged only on the level of his obedience to the thelema of God, for this is the level of his authority or understanding.

That which God does according to His Plan, the boulema, He takes full responsibility for. Yet because the boulema of God is a primal force which directly determines man's ability and desire to obey God's thelema (will), God holds Himself ultimately responsible and liable for the actions and salvation of His creation. That is one reason why He came to pay the penalty for sin Himself.

About The Equinox

About The Equinox Image
The Equinox represents the largest and most involved publishing scheme Aleister Crowley ever devised: the series now includes over twenty large books and is still growing! Some of these books (which are technically called ‘issues’— we’ll get to that in a minute) are rare and expensive, one has never actually been printed, and then there are a number of unauthorised ‘pirate’ additions to the whole thing. Before you panic, let me assure you that I am definitely NOT suggesting that you run out and buy the lot— I still don’t own the whole thing myself for that matter. The reason I am covering it in a guide for the beginner is that there is a substantial amount of confusion over just what The Equinox is, and I felt that this Guide is a good place to clear things up. This is especially needed because Crowley often cites material from this series in his other works. Another reason is that some of the books in the series may very well be useful to you depending on your individual needs and interests. So bearing those caveats in mind we will proceed.

So just what is The Equinox anyway? It really begins in 1904 when Crowley received The Book of the Law and was charged, so he said, by the Secret Chiefs with beginning a New ?on in human history and with preserving the wisdom of the old. This second goal was due to Crowley’s belief that the change of ?on would involve the collapse of civilisation followed by a chaotic ‘dark age’ and he wanted to be sure that important knowledge would survive. (Don’t discount that idea; considering how young the ?on still is, we can’t say that he won’t be right.) Crowley’s solution was to publish a journal, beginning in 1909, which would also serve as the official organ for his new order, the A.A. Later on, around 1912, it also became the official organ for the British section of the O.T.O. Many occult groups, before and since, have published their own periodicals of course, but Crowley determined that his would be the best ever. Being independently wealthy and having published a good deal of his poetry himself, he could do exactly that: each ‘issue’ of The Equinox is itself a hardback book of at least a few hundred pages on excellent paper. Accordingly they look more like separate volumes of a distinguished encyclopaedia than individual issues of a magazine. In this context, Volume refers not to the individual books but to the sets of ten into which the whole series is divided. If you find this is confusing now, so did booksellers back then.

Religion Terry Patten On Outrageous Teaching And Charges Of Enabling Abuse Andrew Cohen

Religion Terry Patten On Outrageous Teaching And Charges Of Enabling Abuse Andrew Cohen Image
I have been a harsh critic of Andrew Cohen over the years, dating back to my "abusive guru" post back in 2006. I have given space to William Yenner's book on Cohen, and I reposted Be Scofield's article on "integral abuse," which is what Terry Patten is responding to in his recent post.

Scofield's post was critical of Cohen, collecting many of the allegations of abuse that have been made over the years by former students - but it was also critical of those who have supported Cohen in the integral community around Ken Wilber.

I actually have a bigger issue with those who support Marc Gafni and allow him to continue teaching, an issue that is also raised in Scofield's article.

Anyway, Patten wrote a long and detailed response (an apologetic?) to Scofield's criticisms of his support of Andrew Cohen (I wish he would respond the to Gafni issue as well).

ON OUTRAGEOUS TEACHING AND CHARGES OF ENABLING ABUSE

Submitted by Terry on June 6, 2010

One of Andrew Cohen's critics recently attacked me in a blog post. Detailing a few of the most inflammatory stories about Cohen, a group of teachers (including me, Ken Wilber and others) were accused of "enabling abuse" because we have dialoged and cooperated with Andrew, his students and his publications. None of us responded publicly to the attack. I chose not to because in the echo chamber of the blogosphere there is no way to respond thoughtfully and at length to irresponsible negativity without raising it to an implicitly equal status, and thereby validating and empowering it.

But now, in the context of my response to the intelligent and responsible article by the Integrales Forum, I feel I have a legitimate context to address the issues raised there.

CONSIDERING ANDREW COHEN

Firstly, what do I think of Andrew Cohen and his allegedly abusive treatment of students? I should admit here that, although I've investigated it with some seriousness, I don't know Andrew's work or history in enough depth and detail to vouch entirely for it or him. For the first fifteen or more years of his teaching career, I responded to him with distaste. I was turned off by what seemed to be arrogance, rudeness, and an unnecessary edge in his personality and teaching style.

But I have read his magazine for years (I think it's truly excellent, and has made a whole series of increasingly important and crucial contributions to the leading-edge of culture and consciousness), and I have watched him and his approach change and grow over time (in exciting and innovative ways with which I've in general resonated.) I have been especially positively impressed by the intelligence, sincerity, seriousness, and depth of many of Andrew's students and former students.

More recently, I've read some hair-raising stories of blaming and shaming and anathematizing the ego that seem like they would only create very deep hypermasculine splits in people's psyches. The worst stories sound pretty strange. I don't "condone" humiliating, pressuring, or emotionally traumatizing people.

But many of the folks who lived through it tell me that they all relate to a particular period of extreme transformational intensity that worked to create an intrapsychic crisis in the dualistic polarity between students' egos and their enlightened intentions, one that ultimately enabled them to break through into a new zone of self-transcending freedom and mutual trust. I've read and heard various passionate testimonies that support this interpretation. Many former and current students assure me that the kinds of incidents that are being called "abuse" ceased long ago. Do I know for a fact that this is true? I can't be certain. But I think so. And I'm 100% satisfied that there's no simplistic open-and-shut evil here. It's "at the very least "a paradoxical dynamic in which nuances count.

Andrew Cohen keeps growing and learning as a teacher. He articulates many of the most important ideas that invigorate integral evolutionary spirituality. He has entered into dialogs with many leading thinkers in the pages of his magazine that have advanced our worldview. His contributions are important and unique. We need more passionate evolutionaries who take the transformation of consciousness and culture as seriously as he does. I want to see many of those ideas extended and deepened, not delegitimized.

Because I cared in all these ways, and because I held some critical perspectives, I raised them with some of his former students, and then some current ones. They were able to discuss these issues in a way that "kool-aid drinkers" could not. They agreed with much of what I had to say, and a couple even suggested that I approach Andrew directly. So last year I did.

Over the last six months, I have confronted Andrew about these issues very directly on a number of occasions, privately and publicly. I was surprised and pleased to find that he has listened to me in a way that seemed authentically curious, open, and self-critical rather than defended. He has listened, debated me, listened again, and ultimately taken some of my comments very much to heart. In the process I told Andrew that the karmas left behind in the process of his past teaching work are his responsibility to clean up, even if (as he insists) he never did anything wrong, and he took that on the chin as entirely valid and very useful, and even thanked me.

I have urged him to say publicly what he has told me - that his work has turned a corner, that through some intense experiments he's established a core group of committed spiritual evolutionaries and that he's more interested now in engaging publicly with allies in cooperatively building evolutionary culture. I hope that is altogether true, and from my experience it appears to be. I've given all of this a "smell test" and so far, I find it entirely credible.

The outrageous stories pertain to extreme "spiritual theater" that arose in a context that is hard for most people to even conceive - an extraordinary experiment, an attempt to live a radically true and conscious existence, as a trustable member of an intensely-committed close-knit group. Andrew Cohen (like my teacher, Adi Da) warned that he is a fierce, fiery guru, trying to create a red-hot transformational cauldron, a "hard school" for the most committed aspirants, a pressure-cooker that people should not approach unless they were interested in the fiercest kind of self-transcending ordeal. And the ones involved in the outrageous stories about Andrew were, I'm told, only close students who had been involved for years. (There seems, at least, to have been truth in advertising.) I don't choose that kind of relationship with Andrew, and neither do most of the people reading this. But we can still appreciate the passionate and radical commitment he brings into our cultural world space, and we can benefit from it.

Read the whole defense of Cohen and is work.

I see what Patten is saying here, and I'd like to believe his is correct. However, I have been reading the Guru and Pandit series in EnlightenNext for many years (an ongoing conversation between Cohen, the guru, and Ken Wilber, the pandit). Based on what I have seen in those "conversations," which I am assuming have been edited to make Cohen look as good as is possible, he is still an authoritarian guru with a huge ego.

In my reading, there is a perceived gulf between some of the ideas he discusses and the language/perspective in which he presents those ideas. It feels like an intellectual double bind - what he says is contradicted by how he says it. There is simply too much emphasis on "I" and "me" in his discussions - too much emphasis on his supposed enlightenment.

Maybe he is no longer abusive to his followers, but I have never really seen anything enlightened in his teachings. When I compare his teachings to Pema Chodron, or Robert Augustus Masters, or Dr. John Welwood (all of whom are Buddhist, while Cohen comes from the Vedanta tradition in Hinduism), he simply does not measure up as a guru.

But then I have always had a physical reaction to his teachings - which I listen to and respect. So I am one of the critics Patten refers to in saying, "Speaking of "smell tests," I have also caught a whiff of some of Cohen's most vocal critics. Something stinks."

Apparently, criticism of gurus like Cohen or Gafni is simply an example of "'mean green' fundamentalism (often resonating with "mean orange" and "mean blue/amber" fundamentalisms)." I remember Wilber using the same language to dismiss his critics in the now infamous Wild Earp post(s). According to Patten, we are not "grasping or engaging sincerely with the complexity and nuance of this total situation."

Patten has the benefit of speaking with Cohen in person - I have not. So maybe he is better able to ascertain the quality of Cohen the person and Cohen the guru. I have read the claims of his former students who give examples of abuse, the claims of his current students and supporters, Cohen's own response to the accusations, and various other perspectives on the situation (see Alan Kazlev's excellent article) - and I have read Cohen's articles and teachings.

I remain unimpressed.
