Theatre Magick Aleister Crowley And Rites Of Eleusis, is DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University by Tracy W. Tupman, M.A. In October and November of 1910 seven one-act plays were produced at Caxton Hall, Westminster, London, under the collective title The Rites of Eleusis. The primaryaim of this dissertation is to recreate as accurately as possible the experience of this production, including the colors and designs of the sets and costumes, the blocking and dance, the music, and the style of vocal delivery of the performers. This reconstruction includes a study of the experience of the audience during the performances, since audience involvement was an important goal of the production. This dissertation also explores the philosophical constructs which dictated many of the above-mentioned artistic choices and, through example and analysis, demonstrates how these productions
reflect both a unique attempt to revitalize Western ritual magical practice through theatrical performance, and explores the close relationship which I suggest lies between contemporary magical practice and theatrical practice.
